Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) is 35 minutes from the festival grounds — the most convenient option. LAX is 2.5 hours drive east on I-10. Rental car essential — no public transport to Indio. Palm Springs or La Quinta hotels give the best festival base.

💡 Book PSP rental cars 3–4 months ahead — they sell out completely for Coachella weekends. LAX cars are more available but the drive is long.

The art installations at Coachella are as important as the music — monumental sculptures and interactive art pieces are scattered across the polo grounds. The installations can be 20+ metres tall and are designed to be impressive in both day and night lighting. Start exploring as soon as gates open (11:00).

💡 The Coachella app has a map of all art installations with descriptions. Some installations have interactive elements only active during the day — visit them first, before the evening music schedule begins.

Coachella has 7 stages (Coachella Stage, Outdoor Theatre, Sahara, Mojave, Gobi, Sonora, and the new Quasar). Afternoon lineups are typically emerging and mid-level artists — these are often the most exciting discovery moments of the festival.

💡 The Sahara stage (electronic/EDM) runs the most densely packed crowd situations — be aware of the heat and stay hydrated. Coachella's medical team recommends 1 litre of water per hour in the afternoon sun.

The festival has dedicated shaded rest areas, misting stations, and free water refill points throughout the grounds. Planning your 14:00–17:00 slot in a shaded stage or art installation significantly improves your energy for the evening headliners.

💡 The Coachella Valley's April heat is real — heatstroke is a genuine risk. Wear a hat, apply SPF50+ sunscreen every 2 hours, and drink water consistently even when you don't feel thirsty.

The main stage headliner (21:00–23:00) is the centrepiece of each night. Beyoncé's 2018 Coachella performance is widely considered the greatest festival headline set ever recorded. The combination of desert cooling temperatures, professional light shows, and 125,000 people creates an unmatched concert atmosphere.

💡 Secure your position on the main stage lawn by 19:30 at the latest for a headliner with a very large audience. The stage is large — even mid-field gives excellent sightlines.

Coachella festival days are 12+ hours of walking, heat, and sensory overload. Start Day 2 with a morning swim at your Palm Springs hotel pool before heading back in. Palm Springs hotels during Coachella are famously pool-party venues — the pool scene from 09:00–11:00 is part of the broader Coachella experience.

Arrive by 12:00 to catch morning acts on the smaller stages — these are often the most artistically interesting performances of the festival. The Gobi and Sonora tents host the most eclectic and credible bookings.

Position for the day's biggest act. The Outdoor Theatre (second largest stage) often has the most critically acclaimed headliners — acts that are critically revered but not necessarily chart-dominant. Some of Coachella's most memorable sets have been on the Outdoor Theatre.

💡 The Outdoor Theatre crowd is consistently more engaged and musically knowledgeable than the main stage crowd — the best spot for genuine music fans.

The Coachella Valley sunset (19:00–19:30) with the San Jacinto Mountains as a backdrop and the festival in full swing is one of the most photographed moments in American music culture. Position yourself on the open polo grounds between stages for the full panoramic effect.

Night two headliner on the Coachella Stage, followed by the Sahara Stage after-hours sets (01:00–02:00). The Sahara electronic sets after the main headliner finish are often the most talked-about performances of the weekend.

💡 The Coachella grounds stay open until 01:00 — pacing yourself through the day means you can genuinely enjoy the late-night programming.

Sunday at Coachella typically has the broadest genre mix — hip-hop and R&B dominate the Coachella Stage by evening. The closing night headliner has historically featured the most unexpected moments (surprise guest appearances, career-spanning sets).

💡 Sunday's festival crowd is slightly thinner than Friday/Saturday — position for the headliner is easier to achieve.

Joshua Tree National Park (45 minutes north of Indio) offers a complete contrast to the festival — alien landscape of twisted Joshua Trees and dramatic boulder formations. A 2-hour drive through the park between festival days or on departure day resets the senses.

💡 The entrance fee is $35 per vehicle. The Cholla Cactus Garden and Skull Rock are the most accessible highlights on the main park road.

After the Sunday headliner, begin departure — Coachella weekend Sunday evening sees the highest traffic on I-10 westbound. Leaving at 23:30 (immediately after the headliner) or waiting until 02:00 avoids the worst congestion.
