Australian Grand Prix

The season opener that nobody wants to miss โ€” Melbourne's parks, lanes, and brunch culture meet F1's most festive race weekend.

Sun, 8 Mar 2026 Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit, Melbourne 4 days ยท arrive Sat, 7 Mar 2026

The Albert Park Circuit sits in a beautiful lake-ringed parkland 3 km from Melbourne's CBD. The Australian Grand Prix is the traditional season opener โ€” it sets the tone for the year, debuts the new cars, and does so in Melbourne, which consistently ranks among the world's most liveable cities. The city embraces race weekend with genuine enthusiasm: restaurant queues, rooftop parties, and a population that actually likes motorsport. Plan four nights.

Your 4-day itinerary

1

Arrival & Melbourne CBD

~$369

Morning

Arrive at Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine)1.5 hrs

SkyBus connects the airport to the CBD in 30 minutes. The Albert Park circuit is 3 km south of the CBD โ€” tram route 96 (St Kilda Road) stops within a 10-minute walk of the circuit gates.

๐Ÿ’ก Hire a car only if you plan day trips outside Melbourne โ€” inside the city, trams, Uber, and the train network are excellent and faster than driving.

Federation Square & Ian Potter Gallery2 hrs

Melbourne's cultural heart. The Ian Potter Centre at Fed Square holds Australia's largest collection of Indigenous and non-Indigenous art, free entry. The architecture of Federation Square itself is worth 30 minutes of slow walking.

Afternoon

Melbourne laneways2.5 hrs$20

Hosier Lane (street art), Degraves Street (cafรฉ culture), and Centre Place form a labyrinth of exceptional coffee, art, and architecture. Centre Place has the best single-origin espresso in the southern hemisphere โ€” Dukes Coffee Roasters.

๐Ÿ’ก Melbourne coffee culture is serious. Order a 'magic' (double ristretto, 3/4 flat white) โ€” a Melbourne invention, not available elsewhere.

Queen Victoria Market (Thursday evening)2 hrs$30

Australia's largest open-air market has a Thursday Night Market that runs until 22:00. Excellent food from 40+ stallholders, live music, and a genuinely festive atmosphere โ€” perfect introduction to Melbourne's food culture before race weekend begins.

Evening

Dinner at Attica3 hrs$280

One of the world's 50 best restaurants โ€” Ben Shewry's intensely Australian cuisine uses native ingredients in ways that redefine what 'Australian food' means. Book 2โ€“3 months ahead for race week. Worth every cent and every minute.

๐Ÿ’ก If Attica is booked out, Brae (1.5 hrs from Melbourne, dinner only) or Lume Melbourne are equivalent in ambition.

Where to eat

Patricia Coffee Brewersbreakfastยท $12
Degraves Street cafรฉlunchยท $22
Attica (or equivalent)dinnerยท $280

Patricia Coffee Brewers: Standing-only cafรฉ โ€” the best coffee in Melbourne by most metrics. Little Collins St.

Degraves Street cafรฉ: Smashed avocado or the shakshuka โ€” Melbourne invented this eating style.

Attica (or equivalent): Tasting menu. Pre-book months in advance.

2

Free Practice โ€” Albert Park Parkland Circuit

~$205

Morning

Albert Park morning walk / run1 hr

Albert Park lake circuit is a beautiful 5 km flat loop through parkland โ€” a perfect warm-up before the F1 action begins. The circuit's race road is used for this public lake path 51 weeks a year. Walking it gives you a ground-level perspective before you watch the cars.

Circuit arrival โ€” F1 Pit Walk (Friday)2 hrs

Friday pit lane walks are available with certain ticket categories at Albert Park โ€” check your ticket type. FP1 starts at 12:05 local time. The circuit opens at 09:00 for pit walks.

๐Ÿ’ก Friday pit lane walk access is the most underused F1 ticket feature โ€” many fans don't realise it's included. The cars up close in the pit lane are extraordinary.

Afternoon

FP1 โ€” First Australian practice1 hr

Season opener practice is always high-drama โ€” new cars, new tyres, unknown performance gaps. The Albert Park circuit runs anti-clockwise around the lake with a long straight down Lakeside Drive. The main grandstand covers the pits and start/finish; Clark/Ascari covers the best braking zone.

๐Ÿ’ก Watch the new cars on ultra-soft tyres in FP1 โ€” engineers test the season-opening setup as teams learn the car. Times drop dramatically across the session.

FP2 โ€” Afternoon session1 hr

FP2 at 15:05 is the more representative session. Long runs simulating race pace. The lake backdrop behind Turns 11โ€“13 makes this the most photogenic section of the Albert Park circuit.

Evening

St Kilda promenade & Luna Park2 hrs$20

The Melbourne bayside suburb of St Kilda is a 15-minute tram from the circuit. Luna Park's heritage funfair (open since 1912), the Esplanade promenade, and excellent Middle Eastern restaurants on Acland Street.

Dinner in Fitzroy2 hrs$65

Melbourne's most vibrant dining suburb โ€” Brunswick Street and Smith Street have exceptional restaurants at every price point. Tipo 00 for pasta; Anchovy for modern Vietnamese; Fitzroy wine bars for natural wine.

Where to eat

St Ali Coffeebreakfastยท $22
Circuit food villagelunchยท $25
Fitzroy restaurantdinnerยท $65

St Ali Coffee: South Melbourne โ€” best eggs and coffee, 10 min from Albert Park.

Circuit food village: Good variety โ€” the Aussie meat pies are a tradition.

3

Qualifying Day โ€” Season Stakes

~$250

Qualifying at Albert Park is notable because it determines strategy โ€” overtaking on the circuit is genuinely difficult, so pole position is valuable. The first lap under the safety car start rules often reshuffles the order more than the whole rest of the race.

Morning

Melbourne Zoo or Royal Botanic Gardens2.5 hrs$15

The Royal Botanic Gardens are Melbourne's finest green space โ€” 38 hectares of curated gardens with exceptional plant diversity, Aboriginal heritage walk, and views of the CBD skyline. Alternatively, Melbourne Zoo is 30 minutes from the CBD and world-class.

Yarra River kayaking2 hrs$45

Kayak or paddle-board on the Yarra River from Richmond. Melbourne from water level is a completely different city. Rental available for 2 hours from Urban Adventures at the Boathouse.

Afternoon

F1 Qualifying โ€” Q1, Q2, Q31 hr

15:00 start. Season-opening qualifying at Albert Park is uniquely tense โ€” teams have limited data, drivers push beyond what they tested in practice, and the fastest lap of the year is often set here. Q3 with 10 drivers on fresh sets of soft tyres is one of the purest motorsport spectacles.

๐Ÿ’ก The Clark/Ascari grandstand (Turns 1โ€“2) gives you the most dramatic view โ€” cars brake from 285 km/h into the first tight hairpin, the widest gap between qualifying and race lap time on the calendar.

Evening

Post-qualifying โ€” Southbank promenade3 hrs$70

Melbourne's Crown Entertainment Complex and Southbank have excellent waterfront dining and live music. Post-qualifying Saturday evening in Melbourne is genuinely festive โ€” the whole city knows F1 is in town.

Where to eat

Operator Espressobreakfastยท $20
Circuit food vendorslunchยท $25
Southbank restaurantdinnerยท $70

Operator Espresso: Richmond โ€” 15 min from Albert Park. Melbourne brunch culture at its finest.

Circuit food vendors: The wood-fired pizza stand near Gate 2 is consistently the best circuit food.

Southbank restaurant: Rockpool Bar & Grill or Coda are excellent for post-qualifying celebrations.

4

Race Day & Departure

~$210

Race start is 15:00 AEDT (04:00 UTC). Melbourne Airport is 40 minutes from the city โ€” late-night departures are practical after the race. The SkyBus departs Southern Cross Station every 10โ€“20 minutes.

Morning

South Melbourne Market breakfast1.5 hrs$25

The South Melbourne Market (open race Sundays) is a 10-minute walk from Albert Park โ€” an institution since 1867. The dim sum stalls in the market arcade are a Melbourne Sunday morning tradition.

Race day circuit arrival1 hr

Race start is 15:00 local time. Arrive by 12:00 to settle into your grandstand, watch support races from 12:30, and absorb the atmosphere as Melbourne's grandstands fill. Race day is the most colourful โ€” team merchandise, flags, and face paint everywhere.

Afternoon

Australian Grand Prix โ€” Race2 hrs

58 laps around Albert Park Lake. The circuit is deceptively fast for a parkland venue โ€” cars average 220 km/h. Strategy and Safety Car timing typically determine the outcome here. The podium is on the main straight in front of the pits โ€” if you have a main grandstand ticket, you're 50 metres from the podium ceremony.

๐Ÿ’ก Bring a portable radio to follow the race commentary while watching. The Albert Park commentary from the main PA is excellent โ€” one of the best on the circuit for fan understanding of strategy.

Post-race podium ceremony1 hr

The podium at Albert Park is immediately accessible from the main grandstand. The crowd is within touching distance of the top 3 cars. Melbourne fans traditionally stay in massive numbers โ€” podium atmosphere here rivals Monaco.

Evening

Post-race Melbourne dinner & departure prep2 hrs$50

Melbourne's CBD is a 3 km tram ride from Albert Park. Sunday evening: Chinatown on Little Bourke Street for excellent yum cha or Vietnamese. The SkyBus to Tullamarine takes 30 minutes from Southern Cross Station.

Where to eat

South Melbourne Market dim sumbreakfastยท $25
Circuit race day foodlunchยท $30
Melbourne CBD Chinatowndinnerยท $50

South Melbourne Market dim sum: The dim sum stalls open from 08:00 on race Sunday.

Melbourne CBD Chinatown: Little Bourke Street โ€” excellent value, great atmosphere.
