🏎️4-day trip itinerary

Hungarian Grand Prix

The Monaco of Hungary — no overtaking, pure strategy, and a magnificent city on the Danube just 20 km from the circuit.

Sun, 26 Jul 2026 Hungaroring, Budapest 4 days · arrive Sat, 25 Jul 2026

The Hungaroring sits in a natural amphitheatre 20 km northeast of Budapest. Often called 'Monaco without walls' — the circuit is technically demanding, overtaking is nearly impossible, and qualifying position is everything. The Hungarian capital is extraordinary: thermal baths, ruin bars, the finest Parliament building in Europe, and food that punches well above Hungary's international profile. Plan four nights split between the city and the circuit.

Your 4-day itinerary

1

Arrival & Budapest

~$174

Morning

Arrive at Budapest Ferenc Liszt Airport (BUD)1.5 hrs

Airport is 16 km from the city centre (Airport Shuttle or 100E airport bus to Deák Ferenc tér, 30 min). The Hungaroring is 20 km northeast of the city — Metro Line 2 to Örs vezér tere, then bus 5 or race weekend shuttle.

💡 The Budapest card (48 or 72 hours) includes unlimited public transport plus many museum entries — excellent value.

Castle Hill and Matthias Church3 hrs$8

The medieval castle district on the Buda side — the Royal Palace (now housing the National Gallery), Matthias Church (14th century, with extraordinary Zsolnay tile roof), and the Fisherman's Bastion with its 7 towers and panoramic views over the Danube and Pest.

💡 The Fisherman's Bastion views are free; the interior is €10. The view from the north tower at sunset is among the finest in Central Europe.

Afternoon

Hungarian Parliament Building exterior2 hrs$18

The largest parliament building in Europe (second only to Ceausescu's Palace in Romania by volume) and certainly the most beautiful — a neo-Gothic masterpiece on the Danube bank, best viewed from across the river in the Castle district. Tours of the interior include the Hungarian Crown Jewels.

Great Market Hall (Vásárcsarnok)1.5 hrs$20

The magnificent 1897 ironwork market hall — Hungary's largest. Ground floor: fresh produce, Hungarian sausages, paprika in every form, and Tokaj wine. Upper gallery: embroidered tablecloths and Hungarian craft souvenirs at fair prices.

💡 Try the lángos (deep-fried flatbread with sour cream and cheese) from the market stalls — Hungary's defining street food.

Evening

Ruin bar evening — Szimpla Kert3 hrs$30

Budapest's ruin bars are unique in Europe — abandoned buildings and courtyards converted into atmospheric bars decorated with salvaged furniture, plants, and art. Szimpla Kert (VII. kerület) is the most famous. An extraordinary evening social experience.

Where to eat

Central Market cafébreakfast· $10
Great Market Hall standing lunchlunch· $18
Borkonyha (Michelin Bib Gourmand)dinner· $65

Central Market café: Coffee and kalács (Hungarian sweet bread) at a Budapest pékség (bakery).

Great Market Hall standing lunch: Lángos, goulash soup, or stuffed cabbage from market stall.

Borkonyha (Michelin Bib Gourmand): One of Central Europe's best wine-focused restaurants. Book in advance.

2

Free Practice — The Amphitheatre Circuit

~$182

Morning

Széchenyi Thermal Bath morning2 hrs$25

Budapest sits on natural thermal springs — the Széchenyi bath complex in City Park is the largest medicinal bath in Europe, opened in 1913. The outdoor pool at 38°C is one of the great morning experiences in travel.

💡 Arrive at 09:00 before the tourist crowds — locals swim from 06:00 to 09:00 and the atmosphere is genuinely therapeutic.

Afternoon

Hungaroring circuit — FP1 and FP24 hrs

FP1 at 13:30, FP2 at 17:00. The Hungaroring's natural amphitheatre setting is its defining feature — the entire circuit is visible from the main grandstand, including the distinctive Turn 2–4 complex where cars descend then climb sharply. The circuit is narrow and surrounded by tyrewall — nowhere to go when things go wrong.

💡 Grandstand B (Turn 2–4 complex) is the best seat at the Hungaroring — the only section where overtaking remotely happens. Plan around this section if possible.

Evening

Budapest evening river cruise2 hrs$55

An evening dinner cruise on the Danube gives the finest possible view of illuminated Budapest — the Parliament, Chain Bridge, Buda Castle, and Gellért Hill all lit simultaneously. 2-hour cruises depart from Vigadó Square.

Where to eat

Széchenyi bath cafébreakfast· $12
Circuit Hungarian food stallslunch· $20
Danube dinner cruisedinner· $65

Circuit Hungarian food stalls: Excellent lángos and gulyás (goulash) at the circuit — genuinely the best country-specific circuit food in F1.

3

Qualifying & the Danube Bend

~$212

Morning

Danube Bend scenic drive4 hrs$15

The Danube Bend 40 km north of Budapest is one of Central Europe's great landscapes — the river turns 90 degrees through forested hills. The towns of Visegrád (medieval castle, panoramic views), Esztergom (Hungary's largest basilica), and Szentendre (Serbian Orthodox art village) are all on the route.

💡 Visegrád Castle ruins at 10:00 with the Danube below and the Börzsöny mountains behind is a sight that consistently surprises first-time visitors.

Afternoon

Hungarian GP Qualifying — FP3 then Q1-Q34 hrs

FP3 at 12:30, qualifying at 16:00. Budapest qualifying is tactically complex — because overtaking in the race is near-impossible, Q3 pole position is particularly crucial. Teams take additional tyre risks in Q3 here that they wouldn't elsewhere. The gap between P1 and P10 in qualifying is typically very small.

💡 The Hungaroring Q3 has produced some of the most dramatic pole laps in F1 history — the narrow circuit and perfect timing of track rubber create a situation where the last lap is almost always the fastest.

Evening

Post-qualifying Jewish Quarter dinner2.5 hrs$70

Budapest's former Jewish Quarter (VII. district) is now its most vibrant cultural and dining area. Costes Downtown (Michelin star) and the Spinoza Restaurant (Hungarian Jewish cuisine) are both in this neighbourhood.

Where to eat

Danube Bend village cafébreakfast· $12
Circuit food vendorslunch· $20
Jewish Quarter restaurantdinner· $70
4

Race Day & Departure

~$163

Race start 15:00 CEST (13:00 UTC). BUD Airport has frequent overnight connections to European hubs.

Morning

Gellért Thermal Bath morning2 hrs$28

The most beautiful thermal bath in Budapest — a 1918 Art Nouveau masterpiece with an outdoor wave pool and magnificent tile interiors. A 2-hour morning spa visit before the afternoon race.

Afternoon

Hungarian Grand Prix — Race2 hrs

70 laps of strategy chess. Race start 15:00. Budapest races typically require 2–3 Safety Car periods to produce real racing action. The team with the best strategy at the Hungaroring usually wins — single-stop vs two-stop debates here are the most interesting of the season. Rarely dramatic in the conventional sense, but deeply rewarding for fans who understand the strategic dimension.

Evening

Post-race Budapest evening and BUD departure2 hrs$40

Budapest Airport is 20 km from the city — easily reached by the 100E bus from Deák tér. Evening and late-night flights across Europe are available. One final Hungarian dinner (fisherman's soup — halászlé — at the Dunacorso terrace on the Danube if time allows).

Where to eat

Gellért bath café breakfastbreakfast· $18
Circuit race day foodlunch· $22
Post-race Budapest dinner or airportdinner· $40

Local tips

  • ·Budapest is extraordinary value — a Michelin Bib Gourmand dinner is €35, a thermal bath is €25, and excellent street food is €5.
  • ·Hungarian weather in July: 28–34°C, very hot on race day. Hydration and shade are essential at the circuit.
  • ·The ruin bars operate until 04:00 — late-night Budapest culture is genuine and energetic. Rest well the day before race day.
  • ·Hungarian language is completely unlike any other European language — even 'thank you' (köszönöm) is unpredictable. English is widely spoken in Budapest tourist areas.
  • ·The Hungaroring is 20 km from the city but traffic can make the journey 90 minutes on race day — use the official shuttle.
