Autodromo Nazionale Monza is the fastest circuit in Formula 1 โ average race speeds above 260 km/h, cars reaching 370 km/h on the back straight. The circuit sits inside Monza Royal Park, a UNESCO-adjacent woodland 12 km north of Milan. The Italian GP draws the Tifosi โ Ferrari fans who transform Monza into a red sea of passion. Milan is 40 minutes away. Plan four nights โ arrive Thursday, fly out Monday.
Your 4-day itinerary
Arrival & Milan
Morning
Malpensa Airport is 45 km from the circuit (40 min by hire car). Linate is 30 km from Milan city and 50 km from Monza. Trenitalia trains connect Milan Central to Monza in 20 minutes (every 10 min).
๐ก Stay in Milan for the first night โ arrive 3 days before the race to enjoy the city without circuit crowds.
The white marble Gothic cathedral (5th largest in the world) and its rooftop terrace (โฌ25) dominate the Piazza del Duomo. The adjacent Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II โ Italy's oldest shopping mall (1865) โ has the finest architecture of any covered arcade in Europe.
๐ก The Duomo rooftop gives exceptional views โ arrive at 09:00 before tour groups.
Afternoon
Milan's arts district and its finest gallery โ Raphael's Marriage of the Virgin, Caravaggio's Supper at Emmaus, and Mantegna's Dead Christ. The Brera neighbourhood outside has the most beautiful streets in Milan and excellent restaurants.
Milan's canals (originally Leonardo da Vinci's waterway project) are the social heart of Milanese evenings. The aperitivo hour (18:00โ21:00) involves one drink and unlimited free buffet at every bar along the canal โ a uniquely Milanese institution.
๐ก Every bar on the Navigli Pavese or Grande serves aperitivo from 18:30 โ a Campari Spritz (โฌ8โ10) includes a very generous food spread.
Evening
Milan's legendary two-Michelin-star address in the Brera district โ Nadia Santini's interpretation of Lombard and Italian cuisine. Reserve 2โ3 weeks ahead for September race weekend.
๐ก If Il Luogo is unavailable, Contraste (experimental Italian, 1 Michelin star) or Trattoria del Nuovo Macello (traditional Milanese, cheaper) are both excellent.
Where to eat
Marchesi 1824 cafรฉ: The most prestigious pastry shop in Milan since 1824. Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II location.
Brera neighbourhood trattoria: Risotto alla Milanese (with saffron) and ossobuco (braised veal shank) are the city's two defining dishes.
Free Practice โ The Temple of Speed
Morning
The Autodromo sits inside the Parco di Monza โ a 747-hectare royal park with ancient oak forest, the Villa Reale (royal palace), and walking paths. The park is open from 07:00 and the circuit perimeter is walkable. The famous old banked oval (used until 1961) is still visible overgrown by the forest โ extraordinarily atmospheric.
๐ก Walk to the old banked oval section north of the current circuit before practice starts โ this is where F1 history lives, half-reclaimed by nature.
FP1 at 13:30. The Monza circuit opens at 08:00 and the first Tifosi fans arrive before 07:00. Even in practice, the sound of F1 cars at 350 km/h on the Lesmo and Ascari straights is unlike any other venue on the calendar.
Afternoon
FP1 at 13:30, FP2 at 17:00. The Variante del Rettifilo (first chicane) grandstand is the most dramatic at Monza โ cars brake from 350 km/h to 70 km/h in 170 metres, and the main grandstand section is 30 metres from the braking zone. The sound of the DRS pods opening on the back straight is audible from 500 metres away.
๐ก The Parabolica (Curva Alboreto) is the final corner and the approach to it from the Ascari chicane is full flat โ 340 km/h. Position yourself at the Parabolica exit for FP2 to understand the full Monza speed experience.
Evening
Monza city centre (2 km from the circuit) has a beautiful historic cathedral and excellent restaurants. Ristorante Amosa serves traditional Brianzola (the regional Lombard cuisine) with exceptional braised beef dishes.
Where to eat
Circuit Italian breakfast stall: Cornetto and espresso standing at the circuit bar โ the Italian way, even at race weekend.
Circuit food court: Excellent pizza, piadina, and risotto stalls at the Monza circuit food village.
Qualifying โ Slipstream Battles
Morning
The 18th-century Neoclassical royal palace inside Monza Park was the Italian royal summer residence. The restored state apartments and the formal English garden are worth 2 hours before the afternoon circuit sessions.
Afternoon
FP3 at 12:30, qualifying at 16:00. Monza qualifying is unlike any other in F1 โ teams form 'tow trains' in Q1 and Q2, deliberately slipstreaming each other to gain 0.3 seconds. Q3 is the opposite โ everyone waits to be last on track to find clean air. The final 60 seconds of Monza Q3 produces the most compressed and dramatic lap times in F1.
๐ก The first chicane grandstand for qualifying: watch the tow trains in Q1 โ groups of 5 cars circulating slowly, then a sudden explosion of speed as the final lap begins. Unique to Monza.
Evening
Take the 20-minute train back to Milan for a celebratory dinner. The Navigli canal district is the most festive area on qualifying evening โ tables on the canal banks, prosecco, and the whole city aware that the Tifosi are in town.
Where to eat
Race Day โ The Tifosi
Race start 15:00 CEST (13:00 UTC). Malpensa Express departs Milan Central every 30 minutes. MXP Airport is the main international hub; Linate serves European short-haul.
Morning
The park fills from 06:30 on race morning โ Tifosi with flags, drums, and Ferrari-red everything pour in from 07:00. Walking the oak forest path to the circuit at 08:00 is one of the great motorsport experiences โ the colour, noise, and passion of the Italian fans before a single car has turned a wheel.
Afternoon
53 laps at the Temple of Speed. Race start 15:00. Monza races are always tactical and usually thrilling โ tyres last the full distance at Monza (low downforce configuration), creating slipstreaming battles that continue lap after lap. If Ferrari leads, the atmosphere is indescribable. The post-race podium ceremony on the main straight, with Tifosi flooding onto the circuit, is one of the most moving events in sport.
๐ก Stay for the podium โ the invasion of the circuit by 40,000 Tifosi after the race, running to the podium stage in the infield, is unique to Monza and one of the authentic wonders of motorsport.
Evening
Train to Milan Central (20 min), then Malpensa Express to MXP Airport (50 min). Or stay overnight in Milan and fly Monday morning. Aperitivo in the Navigli one last time if time allows.
Where to eat
Circuit breakfast โ race morning: The circuit cafรฉ opens at 07:00 on race day โ Tifosi queuing for espresso at dawn.
Practical info
โ๏ธ Getting there
Fly to Milan Malpensa (MXP) or Linate (LIN). Trenitalia from Milan Central to Monza (20 min, โฌ2.90) is the easiest circuit transport. On race weekend, trains run every 6 minutes to handle the 120,000-person circuit crowd.
๐จ Where to stay
Milan (best city experience, 20 min from circuit), Monza city centre (10 min walk to circuit), or within the park itself (camping). Book 4โ6 months ahead โ Monza is extremely popular.
๐๏ธ Ticket advice
The Variante del Rettifilo grandstand (first chicane) is the most dramatic seat โ cars brake from 350 km/h to 70 km/h and you are 30 metres away. The Parabolica (final corner) grandstand is for connoisseurs โ the exit leads directly to the main straight and the speed is incomprehensible.

Local tips
- ยทBring red โ anything Ferrari-red, even a scarf, is acknowledged by the Tifosi and creates a connection.
- ยทThe circuit is inside a royal park with forest โ walking between grandstands means walking through ancient oak forest. Comfortable shoes are essential.
- ยทMonza's first chicane produces the most brake disc glow photography in F1 โ the 350 km/h braking lights up the discs to 900ยฐC. A telephoto lens is essential.
- ยทSeptember in Monza: 20โ26ยฐC, mild evenings. The circuit season aligns with Milanese Fashion Week โ Milan is particularly fashionable the week of the Italian GP.
- ยทIf Ferrari performs well, the Italian GP podium is the most emotional in motorsport. If Ferrari wins at Monza, the Tifosi stage invasion is inevitable.
