Yas Marina Circuit is the setting for Formula 1's season finale β the race where championships have been decided in the last lap (2010, 2021) and where the last competitive F1 laps of retiring drivers have been witnessed. The circuit sits on Yas Island, a man-made entertainment complex in Abu Dhabi's waters, with the W Hotel spanning the circuit on its famous gantry structure. The race begins in twilight and finishes at night β the colour transition from golden sunset to blue-lit circuit is unique in motorsport. Abu Dhabi itself is extraordinary β architecture of breathtaking ambition, world-class museums, and a desert landscape unlike any other race venue. Plan four nights.
Your 4-day itinerary
Arrival & Abu Dhabi
Morning
AUH is 35 km from Yas Island. Taxis and Uber are widely available (30β40 min, AED 80β100). The bus service operates to Yas Island on race weekend. Dubai International (DXB) is also 90 km away β many fans fly into Dubai and drive or transfer to Abu Dhabi.
π‘ If flying via Dubai, the transfer bus from DXB to Yas Island takes 90 minutes and is well-organised for race weekend. Book Yas Island hotels (W Abu Dhabi, Yas Viceroy, or Rotana) for the most immersive experience β being inside the circuit boundary is genuinely extraordinary.
One of the world's largest mosques and arguably the most beautiful β white marble, 82 domes, 1,000 columns inlaid with semi-precious stones, and the world's largest hand-knotted carpet (5,627 sq metres). The reflective pool surrounding the mosque makes it extraordinary at sunrise and sunset.
π‘ Entry is free and open to non-Muslims at most hours β dress code is strict (full coverage, women must cover hair). The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the finest example of contemporary Islamic architecture in the world. Arrive at 08:00 or at sunset for the best light.
Afternoon
Jean Nouvel's extraordinary museum β a dome of geometric steel lattices creating a 'rain of light' effect on 55 pavilions below. The collection spans ancient civilisations to the 20th century β deliberately universal, tracing shared human history. The Abu Dhabi waterfront location makes it equally spectacular from the outside.
π‘ The museum cafΓ© under the dome is worth a stop for coffee β looking up at the lattice dome light effect with a view of the Abu Dhabi skyline through the pavilion gaps is one of the most calming architectural experiences available.
Yas Island has the circuit, Ferrari World (the largest indoor theme park in the world, featuring Formula Rossa β the world's fastest roller coaster at 240 km/h), Yas Waterworld, and the Clymb Abu Dhabi (world's tallest indoor climbing wall). All within 5 minutes of each other.
π‘ Ferrari World is directly adjacent to the circuit β the orange building is visible from the grandstands. The F1 Simulator experience inside Ferrari World uses the actual circuit layout.
Evening
The Yas Viceroy / W Abu Dhabi hotel straddles the circuit on a gantry structure β dining with the circuit below is available at several restaurants. The Yas Marina restaurants (Roberto's, Cipriani, COYA) are the finest on the island. The marina walk at dusk with the circuit lit for media days is extraordinary.
Where to eat
Hotel or Yas Island cafΓ© breakfast: UAE breakfast: ful medames (fava beans with olive oil), shakshuka, and karak tea β or a full Western buffet at the Yas Viceroy.
Lebanese or Emirati lunch: Mezze (hummus, fattoush, kibbeh, grilled halloumi) followed by mixed grills β the defining Abu Dhabi lunch. Restaurants on Yas Island or at the Abu Dhabi Corniche.
Free Practice β The Twilight Transition
Morning
The Empty Quarter (Rub al Khali) β the largest continuous sand desert in the world β begins 100 km south of Abu Dhabi. Desert safari operators offer morning dune-bashing (4WD over dramatic red sand dunes) and camel trekking tours from 06:00.
π‘ Book a private desert tour rather than the group coach tours β 4WD dune driving at sunrise in the Empty Quarter is one of the most dramatic natural experiences in the world.
The circuit opens from 10:00. Yas Marina has an excellent fan zone, the F1 pit lane walkabout (Thursday in some years), and the circuit's position in the water makes the approach by water taxi from the marina extraordinary.
π‘ FP1 at 14:30. The W Hotel gantry view is available for hotel guests β the best elevated view of the circuit, above the pit straight.
Afternoon
FP1 at 14:30, FP2 at 18:00. Abu Dhabi practice sessions undergo a remarkable transformation β FP1 in full daylight (35Β°C), FP2 beginning at sunset and ending under the full LED circuit lighting. Teams use FP2 to simulate race conditions at twilight β the light transition affects driver reference points, visibility, and tyre temperatures simultaneously.
π‘ The Marina grandstand (Turn 1) for FP2 β watching the sun set behind the Abu Dhabi skyline while F1 cars circulate under the increasing LED illumination is a unique atmospheric experience. The circuit's water position means the colours at sunset are extraordinary.
Evening
Abu Dhabi's 8 km Corniche waterfront is lined with parks, cafΓ©s, and restaurants. The skyline view from the Corniche at night β the Emirates Palace, the Abu Dhabi Global Market towers, and the new Zayed National Museum β is the finest urban water-front panorama in the Gulf.
Where to eat
Circuit Yas Island food courts: Excellent Emirati cuisine (machboos β saffron rice with lamb, luqaimat sweet dumplings) and Arabic mezze at the circuit food village.
Qualifying β Season's Penultimate Evening
Morning
Saadiyat Island (15 min from Yas Island) is Abu Dhabi's planned cultural district β the Louvre (already open), Zayed National Museum, and the future Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. The beaches of Saadiyat (white sand, calm waters) are exceptional for a pre-qualifying morning.
Afternoon
FP3 at 14:30, qualifying at 18:00. Yas Marina qualifying is uniquely atmospheric β the session spans the sunset, with Q1 beginning in daylight and Q3 finishing under full LED illumination. Teams managing the light transition in qualifying is a unique tactical challenge. The final qualifying laps of the season for each driver produce an emotionally charged atmosphere.
π‘ The Turn 5 (Bab Al Bahr) grandstand for qualifying at sunset β this is where the LED lights come on mid-session, and the contrast between the still-lit western sky and the circuit's night lighting is at its most dramatic. The most beautiful qualifying image in F1.
Evening
The Abu Dhabi GP qualifying evening concert is one of the largest in F1 β acts on the Abu Dhabi stage have included BeyoncΓ©, Coldplay, and Maroon 5 over the years. The after-party scene at Yas Island (Yas Beach Club, Cipriani, Float Lounge) runs until dawn.
Where to eat
Race Day β Champions Are Crowned
Race start 17:00 GST (13:00 UTC). AUH Airport overnight flights to London Heathrow, Paris CDG, Frankfurt depart 21:30β02:00. Etihad Airways (Abu Dhabi's home carrier) has the most departures β Business Class on the return from the season finale is worth considering.
Morning
The race begins at 17:00 so the morning is free. Ferrari World for one final F1-themed thrill, Yas Waterworld, or a final Abu Dhabi brunch (the Friday/weekend UAE brunch culture β all-inclusive food and beverages at a five-star hotel β is legendary). The Yas Viceroy brunch is extraordinary.
π‘ The UAE hotel brunch is a unique cultural institution β 4-hour unlimited food and beverage packages at the finest hotels. The Yas Viceroy's Saturday brunch (AED 450, β $120) is the most race-weekend appropriate.
Afternoon
58 laps of Yas Marina. Race start 17:00. The season finale begins in the golden light of a Gulf sunset and finishes two hours later under the circuit's LED illumination. Championships have been decided on the final lap here in 2010 (Vettel), 2021 (Verstappen), and 2022 (Verstappen again). The post-race atmosphere β wherever the season ends in the championship β is the most emotionally charged of the calendar year. Retiring drivers' final laps and the championship celebration (or commiseration) make this the most significant race of the season to attend.
π‘ The W Hotel gantry room or the Yas Viceroy hotel room directly above the pit straight is the most spectacular viewing position in F1 β a hotel room with the racing circuit directly below is available via hotel booking (not a circuit ticket). Book the circuit-view room 12+ months ahead.
Evening
Race finishes approximately 19:30. AUH Airport is 35 km from Yas Island (40 min). Most European overnight flights depart 22:00β02:00. For those staying, the Yas Marina post-race celebration continues all night β the final race of the season produces the largest celebrations on the entire calendar.

Local tips
- Β·Abu Dhabi November weather: 25β32Β°C with low humidity β perfect racing weather. The golden sunset timing aligns with the race start spectacularly.
- Β·Alcohol is available at licensed hotels and restaurants in Abu Dhabi β not at street level. All major hotels serve alcohol freely. Yas Island has the most relaxed licensed venues.
- Β·Dress code: more relaxed than Dubai β normal western clothing is fine throughout Yas Island. Conservative dress (shoulders and knees covered) for the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and public areas off-island.
- Β·The season finale creates unusual emotional context β if championships are still mathematically live going into Abu Dhabi, the race has extreme significance. Research the standings before attending.
- Β·UAE dirham (AED) is the currency. Pegged to USD (AED 3.67 = USD 1). Cards universally accepted; cash for smaller purchases.
