The PGA Championship is held in May and is the second of golf's four annual major championships. When hosted at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, the course presents a demanding test with its famous 'Green Mile' closing stretch (holes 16β18). Unlike the Masters' strict exclusivity, the PGA Championship is accessible β general admission tickets let you roam the entire course freely, following any pairing you choose. Charlotte is a modern, walkable city with an excellent food scene, and the proximity of the airport to Quail Hollow makes it an efficient tournament visit.
Your 3-day itinerary
Arrival & Practice Round
Morning
Charlotte Douglas is 10 minutes from Quail Hollow Club β one of the most convenient airport-to-course commutes at any major. Rental car or rideshare both work well. Stay in South Charlotte or the SouthPark area for proximity to the course.
π‘ The I-485 beltway provides direct access from CLT to the Quail Hollow area in 15 minutes outside rush hours.
Practice round tickets are released via pgachampionship.com and offer the most relaxed access β players practice, sign autographs, and are generally more approachable. Wednesday's pro-am is particularly good for close player access.
π‘ Practice rounds let you walk inside the ropes in certain areas β something impossible during tournament rounds. Wednesday is the best day for this access.
Afternoon
Quail Hollow's 'Green Mile' is the most dramatic closing stretch in American major championship golf. The 16th (par-5), 17th (par-3 over water), and 18th (par-4 dogleg) have decided multiple PGA Championships. Position yourself at the 17th green to watch tee shots over the water.
π‘ The 17th at Quail Hollow plays over a large water hazard β it's the most visually dramatic shot of the tournament and creates most of the leaderboard drama on Sunday.
Charlotte Uptown (the city centre) is 20 minutes from Quail Hollow. Stroll the Epicentre, explore the arts district on North Davidson Street (NoDa), and choose your restaurant for the evening. Charlotte has grown dramatically as a food city.
Evening
Kindred (Davidson, 30 min north) was named the best restaurant in North Carolina. Closer in, Angeline's (modern Italian in the Marriott City Center) and Bardo (Charlotte's best cocktail bar) are excellent post-golf options.
Where to eat
Tournament concessions: Tournament food at the PGA Championship is significantly more upscale than Augusta β expect proper food trucks and restaurant-quality options.
Charlotte restaurant: Book ahead for Masters week equivalent crowds in the restaurant district.
Tournament Round β Following the Leaders
Tournament rounds: Thursday/Friday (cut after 36 holes), Saturday (moving day), Sunday (final round). The PGA Championship uses a 156-player field with the cut at top-70 and ties after 36 holes. Sunday gallery is the most charged atmosphere β the Wanamaker Trophy is presented on the 18th green.
Morning
Tournament gates open at 07:00. The first groups tee off around 07:30β08:00 (Thursday/Friday). Early tee times mean thin crowds β you can walk inside the ropes with single players in the early morning. Get to the 1st tee for the first group of the day.
π‘ The most dramatic viewing position at Quail Hollow is the 18th green amphitheatre β arrive by 13:00 to claim a good standing position before the leaders come through.
Pick up a pairing with a world top-10 player from the 1st or 10th tee and walk the full nine with them. The PGA Championship's general admission philosophy means you genuinely follow players rather than sitting in one spot.
π‘ The PGA Championship Shotlink tracker (on the PGA app) shows live hole-by-hole positions β useful for knowing which tee to intercept your preferred player.
Afternoon
Position yourself at the Green Mile (16β18) from 14:00 to see the leaders play through. The 18th green at Quail Hollow with a full grandstand is a proper championship atmosphere.
π‘ The scoreboard behind the 18th green updates in real-time β you can watch the leaderboard change hole-by-hole as the leaders arrive.
The NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte Uptown celebrates America's most popular motorsport β Charlotte is NASCAR's spiritual home. The interactive driving simulators and championship car exhibits are genuinely engaging even for non-racing fans.
Evening
Bardo bar on South Tryon Street is Charlotte's best cocktail experience. For dinner, The Capital Grille (classic steakhouse) or Lumiere (French bistro) are the standard upscale choices near Uptown.
Where to eat
On-course lunch: Eat between 11:00β12:00 before the midday rush at food stations.
Freedom Park & Departure
Morning
Freedom Park is Charlotte's most beloved urban park β 98 acres with a lake, arts centre, and excellent running and cycling paths. A morning walk here after two days of golf is restorative.
Charlotte Douglas Airport is 10β15 minutes from most Charlotte hotels. Allow 2.5 hours before departure. CLT is a busy US Airways/American hub with excellent connections throughout the US and internationally.
Where to eat
AmΓ©lie's French Bakery, NoDa: Charlotte's beloved 24-hour French bakery β croissants, quiche, and excellent coffee.
