IRONMAN Arizona

Desert racing at its finest — flat, fast, and surrounded by Sonoran sunset

Sun, 22 Nov 2026 Tempe Town Lake, Tempe 4 days · arrive Sat, 21 Nov 2026

IRONMAN Arizona in Tempe is one of the most popular full-distance triathlons in North America, drawing thousands of athletes to the Sonoran Desert each November for fast, reliable conditions. The swim takes place in Tempe Town Lake — a 2-kilometre man-made lake created by inflatable dams on the Salt River in the heart of downtown Tempe — in a 2-loop rectangular course with calm, clear desert water. The bike sends athletes north through Scottsdale and the desert landscape on three loops of wide, smooth Arizona roads. The run follows the lakefront path for three loops in cool afternoon air. November temperatures of 22–28°C with dry desert air and brilliant sunshine create some of the best racing conditions of any full-distance event in the world. Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport is 15 minutes away, and the post-race Grand Canyon day trip is one of triathlon tourism's great rewards.

Your 4-day itinerary

1

Arrive in Tempe — Registration, Town Lake Orientation & Mill Avenue

~$195

Registration mandatory on Day 1. Athlete briefing is mandatory attendance — check exact time in confirmation email.

Morning

Fly into Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport (PHX)Variable (domestic US: 2–6 hrs)$25

PHX is one of the best-connected airports in the United States — 15 minutes by light rail or taxi from Tempe Town Lake. Direct flights from most US cities; international connections via Dallas, Los Angeles, or San Francisco. IRONMAN Arizona's proximity to a major hub makes it one of the most accessible IRONMANs for domestic and international athletes.

💡 The Valley Metro Light Rail runs from PHX Airport (44th Street/Washington station) directly to Tempe (Mill Avenue) in 25 minutes for $2. An excellent option without bike boxes — hire car needed if travelling with a bike.

Check in — Tempe Town Lake area30 min

The ideal accommodation zone is the Tempe Town Lake waterfront — Residence Inn Tempe, Hyatt Place Tempe, and the Aloft Tempe are all within 5–10 minutes walk of both transition areas. Staying lakeside means you can walk to T1, T2, and the finish line. The vibrant Mill Avenue entertainment district is one block away.

💡 Book lakeside if possible — watching the pre-dawn transition setup from your hotel window, then walking 500m to the swim start, is the defining IRONMAN Arizona athlete experience.

Afternoon

Athlete Registration & Race Briefing2–3 hrs

Mandatory check-in at the IRONMAN Village, typically along Tempe Town Lake at Mill Avenue. The Arizona expo is large and busy — collect race pack (timing chip, swim cap, numbers, wristband, athlete guide). Mandatory athlete briefing covers the lake swim course layout, the 3-loop bike course directions, and Scottsdale road protocols.

💡 The expo at IRONMAN Arizona is one of the largest in North America. All major nutrition and equipment brands attend. Good opportunity for any forgotten gear.

Tempe Town Lake walkthrough45 min

Walk the lakefront path to understand the T1 swim exit, the transition layout, and the run course loop. The lake is compact and well-defined — the swim start (under the Mill Avenue Bridge), the T1 exit, and the 3-loop run course all fit within a navigable area. This orientation pays dividends at 05:30 race morning.

💡 Walk or jog the first 2km of the run course to understand the lakefront path surface and the turn points. The desert landscaping around the lake creates some visually confusing sections under race stress.

Evening

Dinner — Mill Avenue, Tempe1.5 hrs$48

Mill Avenue is Tempe's main entertainment and restaurant strip, running directly alongside Tempe Town Lake. House of Tricks, Craft 64, and The Yard are popular athlete dinner spots. The ASU student population keeps this strip lively year-round.

💡 Tempe has excellent Mexican food — in the Southwest, carne asada rice bowls and bean dishes are legitimate carb-loading options. Try Illegal Pete's or Cibo if pasta doesn't appeal.

Sunset over South Mountain from Mill Avenue Bridge30 min

Walk to the Mill Avenue Bridge over Tempe Town Lake at sunset. The Sonoran Desert sky turns extraordinary shades of orange, red, and purple. The lake reflects the colour and the distant mountains complete the scene. This is the water you'll be swimming in at 07:00.

💡 The desert cools rapidly after sunset — bring a layer for the evening. Temperatures can drop 8–10°C within 90 minutes of sundown.

Where to eat

Airport or arrival lunchlunch· $20
Dinner — Mill Avenue, Tempedinner· $48

Airport or arrival lunch: Whole Foods on Elliot Road or Sprouts near Mill Avenue for healthy grab-and-go options.

Dinner — Mill Avenue, Tempe: Grilled protein, rice, vegetables. Familiar and digestible — no heat-heavy spicy dishes.

2

Bike Check-In, Lake Swim Recce & Scottsdale Recon

~$88

Bike check-in cutoff typically 17:00. Gear bags due same day. Confirm exact times in athlete guide.

Morning

Practice swim — Tempe Town Lake30 min

Tempe Town Lake is open for athlete practice swimming during the designated window (typically 07:00–09:00 on Day 2). The lake is calm, clear, and approximately 20°C in November — wetsuits are legal and recommended. Swim one loop of the rectangular course to understand the sighting targets: the bridges at each end are the key landmarks.

💡 Sight off the Tempe Town Lake bridges at each end of the course rather than buoys only — the bridges are much larger landmarks. On race morning in pre-dawn light, knowing the bridge silhouettes is essential.

Optional bike course drive — Scottsdale loop1 hr

Drive north from Tempe into Scottsdale along the AZ-101 loop and Rural Road to see the bike course character. The roads are wide, smooth, and well-maintained. Note the slight rolling hills through North Scottsdale — not elevation in the Welsh sense, but enough to feel after 3 loops. The desert landscape of saguaro cactus and the McDowell Mountains in the distance is striking.

💡 Check the weather forecast for race day wind direction. The Scottsdale loop can have 20–30 km/h desert winds — knowing whether the headwind is outbound or on the return matters for pacing strategy.

Afternoon

Bike Check-In at T1 — Tempe Town Lake1.5 hrs

Mandatory. Rack your bike at the transition area along Tempe Town Lake. The IRONMAN Arizona transition is typically located on the north bank, under the Mill Avenue and Rio Salado bridges. Pump tyres, attach numbers, hang helmet, and load nutrition onto the bike. The 3-loop bike course exits and re-enters the same point — know your rack position from the return direction.

💡 The Arizona sun even in November will heat your bike in transition — if racing early morning, note that saddle temperatures can be surprising. Apply chamois cream before leaving transition rather than in the tent.

Gear bag and Special Needs drop30 min

Drop T1, T2, and Special Needs bags. IRONMAN Arizona has clear bag numbering and colour coding — follow the instructions precisely. Special Needs on the bike course is at the Scottsdale turnaround (Loop 1 midpoint).

💡 Put a sticky note inside each Special Needs bag listing its contents — in a depleted state at 90km, reading your own handwriting is harder than you think.

Evening

IRONMAN Arizona Pasta Party1.5 hrs$32

Official pasta party at the IRONMAN Village on Tempe Town Lake — carb-load here with pasta, bread, and salads. The event has a strong community atmosphere; IRONMAN Arizona attracts many repeat athletes and first-timers, and the pre-race energy is positive and encouraging.

💡 Moderate portions at the pasta party. Your largest carb meal of the day should be lunch — a very full stomach at 19:30 does not fully digest by 05:00 race morning.

Where to eat

Breakfast — hotel or self-cateredbreakfast· $14
Lunch — carb focuslunch· $22
Pasta Partydinner· $32

Breakfast — hotel or self-catered: Oatmeal, banana, whole grain toast. Prepare from grocery supplies purchased on Day 1.

Lunch — carb focus: Rice bowl or pasta — make this the larger meal of the day.

Pasta Party: Moderate pasta portions plus extra bread and a banana at the hotel.

3

RACE DAY — 3.8km Lake Swim | 180km Scottsdale Desert Bike | 42.2km Lake Run

Race cutoff: midnight (17 hrs from 07:00 cannon). Swim 2hr 20min cutoff. Bike and run sub-cutoffs listed in athlete guide.

Morning

Race morning — 04:30 wake-up2.5 hrs

Wake at 04:30 for a 07:00 cannon. Eat breakfast by 05:00: familiar carbs, electrolyte drink, nothing new. Walk from your lakeside hotel to transition — the 5-minute walk in the dark with hundreds of athletes moving the same direction is an IRONMAN Arizona hallmark. Pump tyres, load bottles, apply sunscreen, suit up.

💡 Arizona mornings in November start at 12–15°C — bring a throwaway long-sleeve layer for the swim start wait. You'll discard it at the water's edge. Wear your wetsuit to warm up in — entering a 20°C lake after standing in 13°C air is a sharp contrast.

RACE START — Cannon 07:00, Mill Avenue Bridge, Tempe Town Lake50 min – 1hr 20 min (swim)

Rolling wave start underneath the Mill Avenue Bridge. Athletes enter the water from the north bank ramp and swim a 2-loop rectangular course in the lake. The lake is calm, clear, and 19–21°C in November. Sighting is excellent once the sun clears the horizon — the flat, still lake water makes this one of the most technically straightforward swims in full-distance triathlon.

💡 The two-loop format means you beach exit and re-enter mid-swim. Run deliberately through the sand re-entry — many athletes trip here when legs are numbed by water. Keep your goggles on your face until you're back in the water.

Afternoon

BIKE COURSE — 180km, three loops, Tempe/Scottsdale desert roads4.5–8 hrs (bike)

Three loops north from Tempe Town Lake through Scottsdale and into the North Scottsdale desert. The route uses Rural Road, Scottsdale Road, and the Loop 101 adjacent service roads. Terrain is largely flat with gentle desert rollers through North Scottsdale. Road surfaces are excellent. The desert landscape of saguaro cacti and the McDowell Mountains provides one of the most visually distinctive bike courses in IRONMAN. Aid stations every 15–20km.

💡 Three loops means you pass Special Needs three times but only access it once — know which loop the pickup is on (typically after loop 1). The mental game of counting loops is real: each loop feels progressively longer. Focus on power output, not GPS distance remaining.

T2 — Bike to Run Transition5–10 min

Return to Tempe Town Lake, rack your bike, collect run bag, change if needed. The transition volunteers here are excellent. Head straight onto the lakefront run course.

💡 The afternoon temperature at T2 will be 25–28°C in full sun. Wet your hair and arms at the first run aid station immediately — temperature management in the first run loop is critical.

RUN COURSE — 42.2km, three loops, Tempe Town Lake and Rio Salado path3–7 hrs (run)

Three loops along the Tempe Town Lake north and south banks and the Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Area paths. The course is flat with a hard-packed gravel and tarmac surface. Crowd support from the Mill Avenue Bridge area and the athlete village is outstanding — you pass the finish line three times before the third loop's right turn takes you through it for real. Evening temperatures drop to 18–20°C by the later run hours — ideal for running.

💡 Passing the finish arch three times before you can enter it is psychologically designed to break you — use it as motivation, not despair. Each pass means one loop closer. The third time you see that arch, you are turning left into it.

Evening

FINISH LINE — Tempe Town Lake — 'YOU ARE AN IRONMAN'10–17 hrs total race time

The IRONMAN Arizona finish line on the Tempe Town Lake bank is one of the loudest in North American IRONMAN racing. The Mill Avenue crowd, the light towers, the desert night sky, and the announcer's 'YOU ARE AN IRONMAN' echo off the lake surface. Race cutoff is 17 hours — midnight.

💡 The late finishers at IRONMAN Arizona often get the loudest cheers — the Tempe crowd stays until midnight and gives every finisher a hero's welcome. If you are on a cutoff chase, the crowd will carry you.

Where to eat

Race morning breakfast — 04:45breakfast
On-course nutritionlunch
Post-race finisher fooddinner

Race morning breakfast — 04:45: Oatmeal, banana, nut butter, sports drink. Set it up the night before.

On-course nutrition: Gels, Gatorade, bananas on bike. Aid stations every 1.6km on the run: gels, cola, chicken broth, pretzels.

Post-race finisher food: Pizza, hot food, and drinks in the finisher area. Mill Avenue restaurants open late for athletes.

4

Recovery, Grand Canyon & Depart

~$87

Morning

Recovery breakfast and late start1.5 hrs$22

Sleep in. Eat a full recovery breakfast at the hotel or at a Mill Avenue café. Flower Child on Mill Avenue is excellent for a post-race recovery bowl — grain bowls, eggs, and smoothies designed for fuelling athletes.

💡 Prioritise protein and hydration this morning. Your muscles are 24 hours into peak repair. Eggs, Greek yoghurt, and fruit are ideal.

Grand Canyon National Park — South Rim4 hrs driving + 2–3 hrs at rim$35

The Grand Canyon South Rim is 4 hours north of Tempe via I-17 and AZ-64 — a long drive, but one of the world's natural wonders. The Bright Angel Trailhead, Mather Point, and Yavapai Geology Museum are the essential stops. The scale is impossible to comprehend from photographs — standing at the rim on post-IRONMAN legs is a genuinely profound experience.

💡 Do NOT hike into the canyon on post-IRONMAN legs — this is not safe and rangers actively discourage it. The South Rim offers extraordinary views without a single step of descent. Book your vehicle park entry at recreation.gov in advance during peak season.

Afternoon

Old Town Scottsdale (optional on return route)1.5 hrs$40

On the drive back from the Grand Canyon, Old Town Scottsdale offers excellent dining and the Barrett-Jackson auction house (if timing aligns). 5th Avenue shops and a strong restaurant corridor with Arizona-style cuisine make it a worthwhile 90-minute stop.

💡 Old Town Scottsdale to PHX airport is 20 minutes — a good routing for a late afternoon departure.

Return to Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX)1 hr

Return hire car and depart. PHX is a major hub with extensive evening departure options. Allow 90 minutes minimum for international connections.

💡 PHX has some of the best airport dining in the US — Blanco Tacos and Bourbon Steak in Terminal 4 are legitimate restaurants, not airport afterthoughts. Use your pre-IRONMAN self-denial as justification.

Evening

Depart from Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX)Variable

Evening departure. PHX serves direct international routes to London (LHR), Frankfurt, Dubai, and Tokyo. Domestic connections to all major hubs are frequent and late-running.

💡 Compression socks for the flight. Drink 500ml of water per flight hour on long-haul departures.

Where to eat

Breakfast — Mill Avenue, Tempebreakfast· $22
Lunch — Grand Canyon or Old Town Scottsdalelunch· $35

Breakfast — Mill Avenue, Tempe: Flower Child or Kneaders Bakery on Mill Avenue. High protein recovery focus.

Lunch — Grand Canyon or Old Town Scottsdale: El Tovar Dining Room at the canyon rim or Old Town Scottsdale steakhouse on the return route.

Local tips

  • ·November desert weather is outstanding: 22–28°C daytime, dropping to 12–15°C at night. Dry desert air means you will not feel as hot as the thermometer suggests — but you will dehydrate faster than you realise without humidity cues. Drink proactively.
  • ·The 3-loop bike course is well-suited to steady power output but mentally demanding — three passes of the same roads tests focus. Use the looped structure to track pacing precisely: if loop 2 is slower than loop 1, the cause is either over-biking or under-fuelling.
  • ·Tempe Town Lake is one of IRONMAN's most unusual swim venues — a man-made desert lake in the middle of a city. The flat, calm water and excellent sightability make it one of the fastest swims in full-distance racing. Exploit it.
  • ·The Grand Canyon is 4 hours north and genuinely worth the drive on Day 4 — it is one of the seven natural wonders of the world and the scale cannot be conveyed by any photograph or description. After 17 hours of race effort, the canyon provides perspective.
  • ·Mill Avenue in Tempe has an outstanding restaurant and bar scene within 5 minutes walk of lakeside hotels. Post-race night on Mill Avenue is a genuine IRONMAN Arizona tradition. Craft 64 pizza and Four Peaks Brewing (Arizona's largest craft brewer, 10 minutes away) are the athlete favourites.
