IRONMAN Kalmar is held in August in the historic city of Kalmar on Sweden's southeast coast, separated from the island of Öland by the narrow Kalmarsund strait. The swim is unique in world triathlon — a point-to-point crossing of the strait that uses the natural current to carry athletes along the course. The bike course follows the flat Baltic coastline and crosses onto Öland, one of Sweden's sunniest islands. The run is two laps through Kalmar's medieval city centre and along the waterfront. With long Scandinavian summer days and 18–24°C race conditions, Kalmar is one of Europe's most enjoyable IRONMAN venues.
Your 4-day itinerary
Arrival & Athlete Registration
Morning
Fly into Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) or Copenhagen (CPH) and take the train to Kalmar (3–4 hours). Alternatively, fly direct to Kalmar Airport (KLR) if routing permits — small airport with limited connections. The train journey through Swedish countryside is genuinely beautiful.
💡 Book SJ train tickets 2–3 months ahead for the best prices. The Kalmar station is 15 minutes walk from the race village.
Registration is held in the Kalmar race village near the city waterfront. Collect your timing chip, race number, and athlete wristband. The IRONMAN expo runs alongside registration with nutrition, kit, and equipment stalls.
💡 Register as early as possible on arrival day — the expo stalls are best-stocked on Thursday afternoon before the Friday crowds.
Afternoon
Kalmar Slott is one of the finest preserved Renaissance castles in Scandinavia, built in the 16th century and dramatically situated on the waterfront. Walk around the moat, explore the royal apartments, and enjoy views of the Kalmarsund strait you'll swim tomorrow or the day after.
💡 The castle was the site of the Kalmar Union (1397) that united Denmark, Norway, and Sweden — a pivotal moment in Scandinavian history.
Walk to the swim start area and trace the exit point. The Kalmarsund current runs southwest — the course is designed to use it. Visualise the swim entry and where the orange buoys lead.
Evening
Kalmar's small but charming Old Town has several good restaurants within walking distance of the waterfront. Byttan Bar & Kök serves excellent Swedish classics with a modern twist — pasta, salmon, and local Baltic fish dishes all work perfectly for pre-race loading.
💡 Swedish restaurants are expensive but the quality is consistently high. The Baltic sea trout is a local speciality worth trying the evening before.
Where to eat
Train station café or packed lunch: Swedish cinnamon buns (kanelbullar) and coffee are the national breakfast.
Race expo café: The expo café serves sandwiches and soup — convenient if registering at midday.
Byttan Bar & Kök: Reserve ahead — the restaurant fills with athletes during IRONMAN week.
Bike Check-In & Öland Exploration
Morning
The strait water temperature in August is 18–21°C — wetsuit territory for most athletes. A short 10-minute acclimatisation swim near the race start helps you judge buoyancy and breathing rhythm in open salt water.
💡 Salt water provides more buoyancy than fresh water — your wetsuit fit may feel slightly different.
Check tyre pressure, brake pads, gear indexing, and chain lube before racking. The Kalmar bike course is mostly flat but has some coastal crosswind sections — check bar-end plugs are secure as officials will reject bikes without them.
Afternoon
Rack your bike in your assigned position, set up transition bags, and walk the layout from swim exit to bike mount. Kalmar's transition is compact and well-organised — note landmarks near your rack.
💡 Hang a small piece of coloured tape on your rack post — it makes finding your spot significantly faster in the post-swim chaos.
Cross the 6km Öland bridge by car or bike for a preview of part of the race course. The flat Baltic heathland and windmill-dotted landscape of Öland is unlike anywhere else in Sweden. The UNESCO Southern Öland landscape is extraordinary.
Evening
Attend the mandatory race briefing (usually 17:00 or 18:00 — check athlete guide) and eat early. Plain pasta with olive oil or tomato sauce. In bed by 21:00 — alarm is 04:30.
💡 The race briefing covers course changes, water temperature, and cutoff times — attendance is mandatory and rules violations can result in disqualification.
Where to eat
Hotel breakfast: Included at most Swedish hotels. Load up on porridge, bread, and fruit.
Transition area snack: Rice cakes, banana, energy bar — keep it very simple.
Pre-race pasta: Plain, familiar, carb-heavy. No alcohol, no unfamiliar foods.
Race Day — Riding the Kalmarsund Current
Cannon fires at 07:00. Rolling self-seeded start based on expected swim time. Transition 1 closes at 06:45. Bike cutoff at T2 is 10h30m from race start. Run cutoff is midnight (17 hours). The Kalmarsund current assistance means swim splits are typically faster than expected — don't let a fast split push you too hard in T1.
Morning
Eat breakfast at 04:30 (toast, banana, coffee), travel to transition by 05:30. Special needs bags go in before transition closes. Wetsuit on at 06:15 and walk to swim start.
💡 The Kalmarsund can be chilly at 06:30 even in August — get your wetsuit on early and stay warm before the cannon.
Rolling start from the Kalmarsund entry point — the current assists your course. Exit at the Kalmar waterfront and run to T1. Wetsuit strippers are provided by volunteers.
💡 Don't fight the current — let it work for you. Sight on the Kalmar castle spire to stay on course.
Afternoon
Flat and fast coastal route crossing onto Öland island and returning. Crosswinds are the main challenge — stay aero and don't fight the gusts. Aid stations every 20km with gels, bananas, and water.
💡 The Öland crossing exposes you to strong Baltic crosswinds — reduce speed slightly and hold your line rather than fighting the bike sideways.
Two laps through Kalmar's medieval city centre and along the waterfront. The crowd support through the narrow cobbled streets is incredible — locals line the course and the atmosphere is deeply Swedish in the best way.
Evening
The finish line chute in central Kalmar is one of IRONMAN's most intimate and celebrated — the crowd is close and loud. Collect your medal, finisher t-shirt, and recovery food. The athlete village stays open until 01:00.
💡 Find your support crew before leaving the finish area — mobile signal in the athlete village is congested on race night.
Where to eat
Pre-race hotel breakfast: Exactly what you trained with. Nothing new.
On-course aid stations: Gels, bars, bananas, cola, chicken soup — all provided on course.
Finisher village recovery meal: Hot meal at finish village — protein and carbs to start recovery.
Recovery & Departure
Morning
A gentle 20-minute walk along the Kalmarsund waterfront helps flush lactic acid from your legs. The post-race morning in Kalmar is peaceful — the city returns to normal quickly and the waterfront is beautiful in the morning light.
The 17th-century Kalmar Cathedral is a short walk from most hotels — the only cathedral built during Sweden's era as a great European power. Baroque interior, peaceful, and requires minimal walking.
Afternoon
The 3–4 hour train journey to Stockholm or Copenhagen is a comfortable way to decompress after the race. Book a seat on the upper deck of an SJ X2000 for better views. Kalmar Central Station is 15 minutes walk from most race accommodations.
💡 Book flexible tickets if possible — post-IRONMAN departure times can shift if you're moving slowly.
Where to eat
Hotel breakfast — recovery loading: Eat everything. Eggs, salmon, porridge, fruit, juice — your body needs the fuel.
Café Lansen or station café: Smörgåsbord or open sandwich — classic Swedish recovery lunch.

Local tips
- ·The Kalmarsund current is the unique feature of this race — the swim is assisted, which means faster swim splits than expected. Don't use a fast swim to justify going harder on the bike.
- ·Kalmar in August has 17–18 hours of daylight — the midnight finish is still technically dusk. The atmosphere at the finish line under the late Scandinavian sky is extraordinary.
- ·Öland island (connected by bridge on the bike course) is a UNESCO World Heritage landscape — the windmills and Baltic heathland are genuinely beautiful from the saddle.
- ·Swedish medical tents at IRONMAN are exceptional quality — if you feel any medical symptoms during the race, stop at the next tent immediately.
- ·The Baltic wind can be relentless on the Öland crossing — a lower-profile front wheel (rather than a full disc or deep-section 80mm) handles crosswinds much better.
