IRONMAN 70.3 Dubai is the premier half-distance triathlon in the Middle East, held in February on the JBR (Jumeirah Beach Residence) waterfront with the iconic Dubai Marina skyline as the backdrop. The 1.9km swim takes place in the calm Persian Gulf at Jumeirah Beach — flat, warm 24°C water with excellent visibility, making this one of the most welcoming swim starts in the IRONMAN 70.3 calendar. The 90km bike heads south from JBR through Dubai's desert highway corridor toward Jebel Ali, featuring smooth, wide roads and spectacular desert/cityscape vistas. The 21.1km run is two laps along the JBR Walk and beach promenade, surrounded by the Marina towers. February conditions of 22–26°C with low humidity are among the best race-day conditions in world triathlon. Dubai as a destination adds a world-class hospitality and tourism layer to an already exceptional race experience.
Your 4-day itinerary
Arrive in Dubai — Registration, JBR Walk & Marina Sunset
Registration mandatory on Day 1. Race is IRONMAN 70.3 distance: 1.9km swim + 90km bike + 21.1km run.
Morning
Dubai International is one of the world's busiest airports with connections from virtually every major city globally. Emirates, flydubai, Etihad, and most international carriers serve DXB. The airport is 35–45 minutes from JBR/Dubai Marina by taxi or the Red Line Metro to DAMAC Properties station, then a short taxi.
💡 The Dubai Metro Red Line from DXB (Terminal 1 and 3 stations) to DAMAC Properties station (JBR area) takes approximately 45 minutes and costs AED 7.50. An excellent option for athletes without bike boxes. Hire car or taxi is necessary if travelling with bike equipment.
The prime accommodation zone is JBR (Jumeirah Beach Residence) — the beach is the swim course, the JBR Walk is the run course, and your hotel is the athlete village. Rove JBR, Le Méridien Mina Seyahi, Marriott Resort Palm Jumeirah, and Sheraton JBR are all popular athlete hotels. Dubai Marina also works — a 10-minute walk from JBR. Book well in advance as JBR hotels fill for race week.
💡 Book a hotel on The Walk at JBR if possible — you can literally stand on your balcony and watch the swim start, then watch the run course from the same balcony.
Afternoon
Mandatory check-in at the IRONMAN Village, located on JBR beach and The Walk. Collect race pack: timing chip, swim cap, race numbers, wristband, athlete guide. The Dubai race briefing covers Persian Gulf swim conditions (typically benign but can have mild currents), the desert highway bike course, and the run promenade layout. Available in English.
💡 The IRONMAN 70.3 Dubai expo attracts the regional triathlon community — you will encounter professional athletes and elites from Europe, Africa, and Oceania here. The athlete village atmosphere is international and competitive.
Pack T1 (swim-to-bike) and T2 (bike-to-run) bags and the single Special Needs bag (bike midpoint). Dubai uses a standard bagged transition system. Note: IRONMAN 70.3 Dubai has no Special Needs on the run given the 21.1km distance — pack what you need in T2.
💡 Pack sunscreen in your T1 bag — the February Dubai sun is deceptively strong even at 24°C. UV radiation in the Gulf region is year-round.
Evening
The JBR Walk at sunset is one of Dubai's most spectacular settings — the beach on one side, the tower blocks of JBR lit in gold, and the Dubai Marina skyline behind. Walk the run course slowly: understand the turnaround points and the surface variations between the promenade, the beach path sections, and the road crossings.
💡 The JBR Walk is very busy on Friday and Saturday evenings — the race is typically on a Friday morning. Give yourself plenty of time to navigate the crowds during your evening walk.
The JBR Walk has an outstanding variety of restaurants: Penelope's, Fogo de Chão (Brazilian churrascaria), McGettigans Irish Pub (pasta-focused, very popular with athletes), and dozens of international options. Dubai's restaurant quality is consistently excellent.
💡 Budget for premium dining in Dubai — restaurant prices at JBR run 50–80% higher than European equivalents. A pasta dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant is AED 200–350 ($55–95 USD).
Where to eat
Arrival lunch: Dubai Mall Food Court or a JBR café for arrival. Most hotel restaurants serve quality buffets that athletes appreciate.
Dinner — JBR Walk: Pasta, grilled protein, familiar food. Avoid very spicy Middle Eastern food this close to race day if your gut is sensitive.
Bike Check-In, Gulf Swim Recce & Carb Load
Bike check-in deadline varies — verify in athlete guide. IRONMAN 70.3 Dubai may have a Friday morning race start with Thursday afternoon mandatory check-in.
Morning
The Persian Gulf at JBR in February is 24°C, flat, and clear — one of the most pleasant practice swim environments in world triathlon. Swim 15 minutes out into the Gulf to sight the buoy line and understand the beach entry surface (fine sand, gentle gradient). The water is neutral and buoyant.
💡 Wetsuit use in 24°C is typically marginal (check official water temperature ruling for your race year). Many athletes race without wetsuits in Dubai — if you're wetsuit-dependent for buoyancy, practice without to assess the impact on your swim pace.
Prepare bike nutrition for the 90km course: 2 bottles of electrolyte drink, bento box with gels, CO2 and spare tube. The Dubai bike course is 45km out and 45km back — you will not need more than 2 hours of nutrition on the bike.
💡 The desert highway section toward Jebel Ali can have strong crosswinds in February — pack an extra 250ml bottle if the forecast shows 30+ km/h winds, as your fluid losses increase significantly.
Afternoon
Mandatory. Rack your bike at the beach transition area. Dubai's transition is typically very well-organised and uses numbered arched racks. Pump tyres, attach race numbers, hang helmet. The T1 exit heads north to join the coastal road before the Jebel Ali highway — note the route direction from marshals at the briefing.
💡 Reduce tyre pressure slightly for the desert highway surface — UAE roads are excellent quality but temperature changes from 18°C morning to 28°C afternoon can cause significant tyre pressure increases in carbon tubulars.
Stay horizontal from mid-afternoon. Prepare race morning bag, set alarms (race morning wake-up typically 04:30–05:00 for an early wave start), and lay out all kit in sequence. The Dubai race often has professional waves first — age group cannon varies by year.
💡 Pre-cool your hotel room aggressively — post-air-conditioned sleep before a warm race is measurably better than a warm sleep environment.
Evening
An early carb-focused dinner at a JBR Walk restaurant. McGettigans is a reliable choice for its pasta menu and athlete-friendly atmosphere. Alternatively, most JBR hotels serve an athlete-appropriate buffet in race week.
💡 Eat by 19:00 at the latest. Dubai restaurants often have a natural break between afternoon and evening service — book ahead to avoid the 20:30 rush.
Where to eat
Breakfast — hotel buffet: Most JBR hotels offer buffet breakfasts with excellent variety — eggs, oatmeal, fruit, and bread are standard.
Lunch — carb focus: Make this your largest meal: pasta or rice dish.
Pre-race dinner: Pasta, bread, light salad. Keep alcohol to zero.
RACE DAY — 1.9km Gulf Swim | 90km Desert Highway Bike | 21.1km JBR Run
IRONMAN 70.3 distance: 1.9km swim + 90km bike + 21.1km run. Race cutoff typically 8.5 hours from cannon. Check 70.3-specific cutoffs in athlete guide.
Morning
Wake at 04:30 for an early morning start (wave times vary by year — professionals typically 06:30, age group 07:00+). Eat breakfast by 04:45: familiar carbs, electrolyte drink. Walk to the JBR Beach transition — from most JBR hotels this is under 5 minutes. Pump tyres, load bottles, apply sunscreen, suit up.
💡 Apply sunscreen before putting on your tri-suit, not after. The Dubai sun in February at the Gulf is UV-intense even in the morning hours. SPF 50 minimum.
Rolling wave start from JBR Beach into the Persian Gulf. 1.9km in 24°C calm water — two laps of a simple beach-parallel course with clear sighting buoys. The flat, warm conditions make this one of the most swimmer-friendly IRONMAN 70.3 swim courses in the world. Wetsuits may or may not be permitted depending on official water temperature measurement.
💡 The beach re-entry after lap 1 can have mild shore break — watch your footing on the wet sand and run strongly onto dry sand before the wave re-entry. Hesitation at the water's edge costs seconds.
Afternoon
The Dubai 70.3 bike course heads south from JBR on the coastal road, joins the Sheikh Zayed Road corridor (or service roads parallel to it), and proceeds southwest toward Jebel Ali Free Zone and back — 45km out, 45km return on an essentially flat desert highway. The roads are wide, smooth, and well-maintained UAE highways. The desert landscape of flat sand, occasional palm plantations, and distant Jebel Ali port creates an unusual racing environment. Crosswinds from the Gulf can be a significant factor.
💡 This is a fast course for strong cyclists — but the return headwind (common in February) cancels much of the aerodynamic advantage. Race your own power output. UAE traffic marshals are excellent at the course junctions.
Return to JBR Beach T2, rack bike, collect run bag, and transition. The run begins immediately on the JBR Walk promenade — cool sea breeze off the Gulf is a welcome transition from the desert highway.
💡 The Dubai run course surface includes some beach sand sections — ensure your run shoes have adequate traction for the short beach portions between promenade sections.
Two laps along the JBR Walk and beachfront path between The Beach mall and Al Mamzar Beach Park boundary. The course is flat, crowd-supported, and visually extraordinary — the Dubai Marina skyline, The Beach mall, and the Persian Gulf on your right for the full 21km. Temperatures by the afternoon run section will be 25–27°C with low humidity — a comfortable running temperature.
💡 Pace the first lap conservatively — the JBR Walk crowds and the excitement of the Dubai setting can induce a faster first km than intended. Check your watch at km 3 and km 8 before committing to a pace.
Evening
The IRONMAN 70.3 Dubai finish line is on the JBR beachfront promenade with the Marina towers behind and the Gulf in front. The finish chute is well-supported and the announcer call sounds as good for 70.3 finishers as it does for full-distance athletes. Race cutoff is typically 8.5 hours from wave start.
💡 Walk along the beach after the finish area for 10 minutes — gentle beach walking within 30 minutes of finishing significantly reduces post-race lactic acid pooling in the legs.
Dubai's restaurants and promenade are a spectacular setting for a post-race celebration. Pier 7 in Dubai Marina (7 floors of restaurants), Zero Gravity beach club (directly on JBR), and the IRONMAN finisher dinner are all popular options.
💡 Book a post-race dinner reservation before race day — Dubai's best restaurants fill up on weekends and a table for two at a Marina restaurant needs advance booking.
Where to eat
Race morning breakfast — 04:45: Toast, banana, honey, electrolyte drink. Prepare from hotel room supplies.
On-course nutrition: Gels and electrolyte drink on bike. Aid stations on run: water, Gatorade, gels, cola, bananas.
Post-race celebration dinner: This is the reward dinner. Dubai Marina restaurants are among the finest in the world. Budget accordingly.
Recovery, Burj Khalifa & Gold Souk — Depart
Morning
Sleep in. A substantial hotel buffet breakfast is the ideal post-race meal in Dubai — JBR hotels typically serve premium buffets with excellent variety. Focus on protein, carbohydrates, and fresh fruit.
💡 Drink a litre of water before breakfast. The Dubai climate (low humidity) means overnight dehydration is faster than in humid environments — you will wake thirstier than usual.
The Dubai Frame (30 minutes by metro from JBR via Red Line) is a 150m picture-frame structure with one side facing old Dubai and the other facing modern Dubai — the city's most literal architectural metaphor. The glass walkway at the top gives views over Zabeel Park and the full Dubai skyline. Budget 90 minutes.
💡 Book Dubai Frame tickets online to avoid the queue at the door. The glass floor section at the top is not for height-phobic athletes.
Afternoon
The world's tallest building at 828m — the At the Top observation deck on floors 124/125 offers the most extraordinary urban panorama on Earth. Book the SKY level (floor 148) for a premium experience. Pre-book well in advance — same-day tickets are rare and expensive. Nearby Dubai Mall and the Dubai Fountain (world's largest choreographed fountain) are excellent post-Burj activities.
💡 The Burj Khalifa observation deck requires advance booking — same-day tickets cost double and are frequently sold out. Book at burjkhalifa.ae at least 1 week before your visit.
Dubai's Gold Souk in the Deira district (30 minutes by metro from Burj Khalifa via Red Line transfer) is one of the world's largest gold markets — 300+ gold merchants in a covered arcade souk. Whether buying or not, the visual spectacle of more gold per square metre than anywhere else on Earth is worth the journey. The nearby Spice Souk is equally atmospheric.
💡 Bargaining is expected and accepted in the Gold Souk. The listed price is always higher than the transactable price. Know the gold price before you enter — it is set globally and posted daily.
Return to DXB by Metro Red Line (Union station to Airport Terminal 1/3, approximately 45 minutes, AED 7.50) or by taxi (30–40 minutes, AED 50–80 from Deira). Allow 3 hours before departure for international check-in and Emirates security queues.
💡 Emirates Terminal 3 at DXB is one of the finest airport terminals in the world — Al Maha Lounge (business) or the complimentary First Class lounge if applicable are spectacular post-IRONMAN recovery environments.
Evening
Evening international departure. Emirates connects Dubai to 140+ destinations with excellent service standards. The flight home after a Dubai IRONMAN 70.3 is best spent horizontal if your upgrade luck is strong.
💡 Compression socks mandatory. Dubai to London is 7 hours — a meaningful DVT risk window post-endurance racing. Walk the aisle every 60–90 minutes.
Where to eat
Breakfast — JBR hotel buffet: Full hotel buffet — eggs, smoked salmon, fruit, pastries. The best recovery breakfast option in the UAE.
Lunch — Burj Khalifa area, Dubai Mall: Dubai Mall has every restaurant imaginable. Zuma Dubai, Nobu, or a simple Lebanese mezze at Paul Café.

Local tips
- ·February is Dubai's finest weather month: 22–26°C, 40–50% humidity, minimal wind. This is deliberate race scheduling — the organisers picked the best possible month. Take advantage of the comfortable conditions and race to your potential rather than managing weather.
- ·UAE law: alcohol is available at licensed hotel restaurants and bars (not street-level shops). Post-race celebrations at hotel venues are straightforward. Do not carry alcohol in public outside licensed premises.
- ·Dubai's transport infrastructure is outstanding — the Metro Red Line connects DXB, the Marina/JBR area, Dubai Mall/Burj Khalifa, and Deira in a clean, air-conditioned system that runs until midnight (01:00 on Fridays). Careem app (UAE's Uber) works for all taxi needs.
- ·The UAE dirham (AED) is pegged to the USD at approximately 3.67 AED per dollar — currency conversion is simple. Most transactions are cashless and card payment is universal.
- ·Ramadan timing: IRONMAN 70.3 Dubai in February occasionally overlaps with the early days of Ramadan depending on the Islamic calendar year. Check in advance — public eating/drinking rules apply during daylight Ramadan hours and some restaurant services change.
