The Athens Classic Marathon is the most historically profound race in the world. In 490 BC, a messenger named Pheidippides ran from the Plains of Marathon to Athens to announce the Greek victory over the Persians β a distance of 42 km, the same distance as today's race. You run the exact same route, finishing inside the Panathenaic Stadium (the original Olympic stadium, built in marble in 330 BC). November in Athens is 20Β°C and sunny. This is running at its most meaningful.
Your 3-day itinerary
Arrival & Athens Acropolis
Morning
Athens Airport is 35 km east of the city centre. Metro Line 3 runs direct to Syntagma Square in 40 minutes (β¬11). Alternatively, express buses run to central Athens every 15 minutes (β¬6.50). Stay in Monastiraki or Plaka for the most atmospheric location near the Acropolis.
π‘ The metro is the most reliable option β avoid taxis during busy morning hours.
The Athens Marathon Expo is held at the Athens Metropolitan Expo or the Panathenaic Stadium area (check the official website for the current year's location). Bib collection is mandatory on Saturday before the race.
Afternoon
The Acropolis is the most important archaeological site in the Western world β the Parthenon (447 BC) sits 156 metres above Athens on a rocky plateau visible from across the city. The morning light from the Acropolis Museum cafΓ© is magical. Book tickets in advance.
π‘ Visit early Saturday morning when light and crowds are best. The Caryatid porch of the Erechtheion is the most photographed view.
Monastiraki's flea market and the adjacent Plaka neighbourhood are Athens at its most atmospheric β narrow marble streets, Byzantine churches, tavernas, and vendors selling everything from icons to evil-eye amulets.
Evening
Greek cuisine naturally lends itself to pre-race carb loading. Moussaka, pastitsio, or simple pasta with lamb are excellent options. Taverna Strofi near the Acropolis has a rooftop with direct Parthenon views β one of the most extraordinary dinner settings in the world.
π‘ Reserve a rooftop table at Strofi weeks in advance β the Acropolis-lit view at night is unforgettable.
Where to eat
Monastiraki gyros stall: Greek gyros (pork or chicken in pita with tzatziki) are the best β¬3 food in Europe.
Race Day β Pheidippides' Route
Wave starts from 09:00. The course is predominantly downhill for the first 30 km then rolling. November Athens weather: 18β22Β°C at start, warming to 24Β°C β warm for November marathon running. Start conservatively and hydrate well.
Morning
The race starts in the town of Marathon, 42 km northeast of Athens. Official race buses depart from Syntagma Square from 05:30 onwards (check official website for your wave's bus time). Eat breakfast at 05:00 and be at the bus by 06:00.
π‘ Race day bus transportation is included in your entry fee. Do not try to drive to the start β the road is closed to private vehicles on race morning.
The start village at Marathon is atmospheric β the Tomb of the Athenians (a burial mound of those killed in the Battle of Marathon, 490 BC) is visible from the start area. You are about to run the exact route Pheidippides ran 2,500 years ago.
Afternoon
42.195 km mostly downhill (the first 30 km) then rolling into Athens. The final 12 km run through Athens suburbs towards the city centre. The crowd builds dramatically as you approach the city, culminating in the final kilometre through central Athens lined 6-deep with spectators.
π‘ The race is mainly downhill for the first 30 km β run conservatively. The uphills from km 30β37 destroy runners who went out too fast. Take the downhills easy.
The finish is inside the Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro) β built entirely from white Pentelic marble, used for the first modern Olympics in 1896. Running through the tunnel into the marble stadium with 15,000 cheering spectators is one of the most moving finishes in world sport.
π‘ Raise your arms. Look up at the marble stands. You just ran the world's first marathon.
Evening
Psirri is Athens' hipster neighbourhood with excellent modern Greek restaurants. Tzitzikas & Mermigas on Mitropoleos Street does creative modern Greek food with excellent mezze. Perfect for a celebration meal with other runners.
Where to eat
Hotel room breakfast: Bread, honey, banana β familiar, simple, effective.
Stadium finisher packs: Greek honey, olive oil energy bars, and water β appropriately classical.
Recovery & Ancient Athens
Morning
The Acropolis Museum (at the base of the Acropolis hill) is one of Europe's finest modern museums β housing the original Parthenon sculptures and providing extraordinary context for yesterday's race finish at the Panathenaic Stadium. The glass floor reveals excavated ancient streets beneath your feet.
π‘ The Parthenon gallery on the top floor (with real marbles from the Parthenon and casts of the Elgin Marbles) is the highlight.
Return to the Panathenaic Stadium on recovery day as a tourist rather than a runner. The stadium offers tours with access to the track, the finish line, and the trophy room. Stand at the finish line in daylight and absorb what you did yesterday.
Afternoon
Glyfada is Athens' coastal suburb 20 km south of the city β an easy metro ride. Beautiful seafront promenade, excellent fish restaurants, and the first glimpse of the Aegean Sea. A perfect recovery afternoon before flying home.
Metro Line 3 from Syntagma to the airport in 40 minutes. Allow 2.5 hours before international departure.
Where to eat
Hotel Greek breakfast: Greek yoghurt with honey and walnuts is the world's best recovery breakfast.
