BMW Berlin Marathon

Run the world's fastest marathon course through one of Europe's greatest cities.

Sun, 27 Sept 2026 Brandenburg Gate, Berlin 3 days Β· arrive Sat, 26 Sept 2026

The BMW Berlin Marathon is the world record course β€” more marathon world records have been set here than anywhere else. The flat, fast route through central Berlin passes the Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, and Alexanderplatz. Arriving runners need 2 full days: the expo on Friday/Saturday to collect your race pack and carb-load, then race day Sunday, with Monday for recovery and city exploration.

Your 3-day itinerary

1

Arrival & Race Expo

~$95

Morning

Arrive at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER)1 hr$4

BER Airport opened in 2020 and is 35 km south of the city centre. The Airport Express (FEX) train reaches Hauptbahnhof in 30 minutes (€4). The U-Bahn and S-Bahn network is excellent β€” no hire car needed in Berlin.

πŸ’‘ Buy a Berlin 3-day transport pass (€36) covering all zones β€” the best value for marathon weekend travel.

Race number collection at the Expo1.5 hrs

The Berlin Marathon Expo is held at Messe Berlin (U2 Messe Nord station). This is mandatory β€” you must collect your race number and timing chip in person. The expo also has all major running brand stalls and merchandise.

πŸ’‘ Collect your race pack immediately on arrival β€” Friday morning is less crowded than Saturday afternoon.

Afternoon

Brandenburg Gate & Memorial to Murdered Jews of Europe2 hrs

Berlin's most iconic landmark and the nearby Holocaust Memorial are a 20-minute walk from the expo. The Brandenburg Gate is the marathon's finish line β€” walk through it now and visualise crossing on Sunday.

πŸ’‘ The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe (Holocaust Memorial) is profound and important. Allow at least 45 minutes.

East Side Gallery walk1.5 hrs

The longest remaining section of the Berlin Wall (1.3 km) is now a gallery of murals by international artists. Walk the full stretch along the Spree river for the most powerful history lesson Berlin offers.

Evening

Mitte carb-loading dinner2 hrs$40

Pre-marathon carb loading. Zum Franziskaner (Potsdamer Platz) does excellent pasta and schnitzel in enormous portions. Alternatively, any of the Italian restaurants near Hackescher Markt serve the pre-race pasta plates runners need.

πŸ’‘ Keep dinner simple, familiar, and carb-heavy. Avoid anything unfamiliar, fried, or high in fibre the night before the race.

Pasta restaurant: High carbohydrate, low fibre β€” classic marathon eve meal.

2

Race Day β€” Brandenburg Gate Finish

~$129

Wave starts from 09:15 (elite) to 10:30 (last wave). Check your wave assignment on the Berlin Marathon app. The race course is officially closed at 6h30m β€” elite runners finish in under 2h03m, mass runners in 4–5 hours. The Brandenburg Gate finish is magical regardless of your finishing time.

Morning

Pre-race breakfast30 mins$12

Eat 3 hours before your start time. Classic marathon breakfast: oatmeal or toast with banana and peanut butter, coffee, and 500ml water. The race starts from the Tiergarten at 09:15 (elite) with mass runners from 09:30.

πŸ’‘ If your start time is 09:30, eat at 06:30 and be at the start area by 08:30. Bag drop closes 45 minutes before your wave start.

Start area & bag drop1.5 hrs

The start is in the Tiergarten park, just west of the Brandenburg Gate. Bag drop is at the start (bags transported to finish). Allow 90 minutes from hotel to reach your corral with time to warm up.

πŸ’‘ Queue for portable toilets early β€” the lines are long in the 30 minutes before start gun.

Afternoon

Berlin Marathon Race4–6 hrs

42.195 km through Berlin's most historic streets. The course passes Potsdamer Platz, the Reichstag, KurfΓΌrstendamm, and finishes through the Brandenburg Gate β€” the most iconic finish line in marathon running. The crowd support throughout central Berlin is exceptional.

πŸ’‘ The iconic Brandenburg Gate finish is at 42.1 km β€” the crowd funnels you through and you'll want to take in every second of it despite being exhausted.

Finish line & finisher village1.5 hrs

After crossing the finish line, collect your finisher medal, mylar blanket, and recovery bag. The finisher area in the Tiergarten has massage services, food, beer, and the celebratory atmosphere of 45,000 runners having just completed a world marathon major.

Evening

Recovery dinner β€” Berlin traditional2 hrs$45

You've earned this. Zur Letzten Instanz (Berlin's oldest restaurant, est. 1621) in Mitte serves classic German food β€” Wiener schnitzel, sauerbraten, and local Pilsner. Or have a quieter recovery meal near your hotel.

πŸ’‘ Replenish with protein, carbs, and salt β€” a classic German plate of meat, potatoes, and beer is exactly what you need.
