İstanbul Marathon

The only marathon in the world that runs across two continents.

Sun, 8 Nov 2026 Bosphorus Bridge, Istanbul 3 days · arrive Sat, 7 Nov 2026

The Vodafone Istanbul Marathon holds a unique distinction: it is the world's only marathon that crosses two continents in a single race. The course begins on the Asian side of Istanbul in the Altunizade district, crosses the iconic Bosphorus Bridge (officially the 15 July Martyrs Bridge) from Asia into Europe, and winds through the historic European districts of Istanbul to finish at Sultanahmet — the heart of one of the world's greatest cities. Held every November in comfortable 10–16°C conditions, the race combines extraordinary geography with a backdrop of minarets, the Sea of Marmara, and the incomparable Istanbul skyline. It is the only race in the world where you physically run from one continent to another.

Your 3-day itinerary

1

Arrival & Race Expo

~$105

Turkish lira (TRY) is volatile — carry USD or EUR as a backup and change small amounts to TRY as needed. Most tourist-area restaurants and hotels accept EUR and USD. Notify your bank before travelling to avoid card blocks on Turkish transactions.

Morning

Arrive at Istanbul Airport (IST) or Sabiha Gökçen (SAW)1.5 hrs

Istanbul has two major airports. Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side is the main international hub — 45km from the city centre. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side is served by low-cost carriers and is closer to the race start area. IST connects to the city via Havaist bus services and the metro extension. SAW connects to Kadıköy and Taksim by bus.

💡 From IST, the Havaist HAV-1 express bus to Taksim Square takes 45–60 minutes for 100 TRY (~$3 USD). Taxis are abundant but agree on the fare before departing — metered taxis are legitimate but some drivers quote flat tourist rates. Uber is available and usually more transparent on pricing.

Check in at hotel in Sultanahmet or Beyoğlu/Taksim1 hr

Sultanahmet — Istanbul's historic old city, home to the Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, and Topkapi Palace — is the race finish area and an atmospheric base. Beyoğlu and Taksim are livelier, more contemporary neighbourhoods across the Golden Horn, closer to the race expo. Both are excellent choices.

💡 Sultanahmet is quieter in the evening but less connected by metro. Beyoğlu is noisier but better connected by Tünel funicular and tram T1. For the expo, Beyoğlu hotels save time.

Afternoon

CNR Expo Center — Race Expo2.5 hrs

The official Vodafone Istanbul Marathon expo is held at CNR Expo Center, Istanbul's main exhibition complex. Mandatory bib and chip collection — bring your passport (required in Turkey for all official race registrations) and registration confirmation. The expo is large with Turkish and international running brands, nutrition suppliers, and merchandise.

💡 CNR Expo is on the European side, accessible by metro (Yenibosna station on the M1 line) from most central hotels. Allow extra time for the expo shuttle between metro and expo building. Istanbul traffic is legendary — avoid peak hours (08:00–10:00 and 17:00–20:00) entirely.

Galata Tower and Karaköy waterfront walk1.5 hrs

Take a gentle walk from Beyoğlu down to the Karaköy waterfront at the mouth of the Golden Horn. The 14th-century Galata Tower offers panoramic views but involves climbing many stairs — decide based on energy levels. The Karaköy waterfront is flat, scenic, and perfect for a leg-loosening stroll with views of the Bosphorus and the Asian shore.

💡 Skip the Galata Tower interior on pre-race day (steep stairs, crowds). The view from the base and the Galata Bridge below are excellent without any exertion.

Evening

Pre-race carb-load dinner — manti or pasta near Taksim1.5 hrs$22

Turkish manti (tiny dumplings filled with spiced lamb, topped with yoghurt and paprika butter) is an excellent carb-load meal — high in carbohydrate, moderate protein. Alternatively, Taksim and Beyoğlu have excellent Italian restaurants with pre-race pasta. Avoid rich stews, excess fat, and alcohol. Turkish bread (ekmek) is superb — eat plenty of it.

💡 Manti restaurants in Istanbul serve enormous portions for very reasonable prices. Erzurum Cağ Kebap on İstiklal Caddesi or any traditional Turkish restaurant near Taksim will have manti or pide (Turkish flatbread with fillings) that work well as carb-loading.

Where to eat

Airport or in-flight breakfastbreakfast· $15
Beyoğlu lunch — traditional Turkishlunch· $14
Pre-race manti or pasta dinner — Taksimdinner· $22

Airport or in-flight breakfast: Turkish airports have good simit (sesame bread ring) stands — an excellent simple carbohydrate for travel day.

Beyoğlu lunch — traditional Turkish: Istanbul's lunch options are exceptional value — a full traditional Turkish meal with bread, soup, and a main costs 150–250 TRY ($4–7 USD).

Pre-race manti or pasta dinner — Taksim: Manti is one of the world's great comfort foods and works perfectly as a carb-load dinner. A large portion plus Turkish bread will hit your carbohydrate targets easily.

2

Race Day — Bosphorus Bridge

~$65

Start time: 09:00 AM, with multiple waves. Elite waves depart first followed by mass waves at 3–5 minute intervals. Wave assignment is bib colour-coded by predicted finish time submitted at registration. Course cutoff: 6 hours (15:00). The Bosphorus Bridge section (km 8–13) is the race's defining moment and the world's most unique road running experience — 1,560 metres across a suspension bridge, 64 metres above the strait, with container ships passing below. The bridge is the only time in the year it is open to foot traffic. After the bridge, the course passes Dolmabahçe Palace (km 20), the grandest 19th-century Ottoman palace in existence — look right for the full facade from the coastal road. Sultanamet finish is surrounded by 1,500 years of architecture — the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, and the Hippodrome are all visible from the finish line.

Morning

Pre-race breakfast at hotel45 mins$12

Wake 3 hours before your wave start. A Turkish hotel breakfast (simit, cheese, eggs, tomato, olives) is excellent pre-race fuel if you are accustomed to it — stick to the plain carbohydrate elements: bread, a banana, and tea. The Istanbul Marathon typically starts at 09:00 AM from the Asian side, requiring a 05:30 AM wake-up for the shuttle crossing.

💡 Turkish Çay (tea) is the national caffeine — available in every hotel and totally acceptable pre-race if you train with tea. November mornings are cold (8–12°C at start time) — layer up for the Asian-side wait.

Official race shuttle — European side to Asian start1.5 hrs

This is the unique logistical feature of the Istanbul Marathon. Runners must travel from the European to the Asian side to reach the start in Altunizade. Official race shuttles depart from Sultanahmet and Taksim areas from 06:30 AM — this is mandatory, as the Bosphorus Bridge is closed to regular traffic on race morning. Check your participant guide for the exact shuttle departure point nearest your hotel.

💡 The shuttles run on a tight schedule — missing your shuttle could mean missing your wave start. Go to the designated shuttle stop at least 20 minutes before departure. The shuttle crossing itself offers excellent early-morning Bosphorus views.

Afternoon

Run the Vodafone Istanbul Marathon — 42.195 km4–6.5 hrs

The race begins in Altunizade on the Asian shore, heads north to Bağlarbaşı, then turns west to cross the Bosphorus Bridge into Europe — a genuinely once-in-a-lifetime running moment, crossing between Asia and Europe on foot with the strait 64 metres below. The European course winds through Beşiktaş, along the Bosphorus shoreline, past the Dolmabahçe Palace, through Karaköy, across the Galata Bridge, and into the historic Eminönü and Sultanahmet districts for the finish near the Blue Mosque.

💡 The Bosphorus Bridge section (km 8–13) is the emotional pinnacle of the race — look left for the Asian shore, right for the Sea of Marmara, and down for the ships passing through the strait. The European course from Beşiktaş toward Sultanahmet has rolling terrain — conserve energy on the bridge and the Beşiktaş uphill sections.

Finisher Village — Sultanahmet1 hr

Cross the finish line in Sultanahmet, the ancient heart of two empires, with the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia visible on the horizon. Collect your finisher medal — the Istanbul Marathon medal designs typically reflect the Bosphorus Bridge and Ottoman architecture. The finisher village in the Sultanahmet park area is atmospheric and well-supplied.

💡 The Sultanahmet finish area is in the historic zone — bag drop retrieval and supporter meeting points require navigating narrow streets. Agree on a specific landmark meeting point with supporters beforehand (the Obelisk of Theodosius in the Hippodrome is unmistakable).

Evening

Recovery dinner — Sultanahmet or Karaköy restaurant2 hrs$30

Istanbul's food scene is one of the world's great culinary traditions. For post-marathon recovery: beyti (minced lamb in flatbread), kısır (bulgur wheat salad), and a hearty lamb and vegetable stew with rice provide excellent protein and carbohydrate balance. A Bosphorus-view restaurant in Karaköy with fresh fish is another outstanding option.

💡 Restaurants in Sultanahmet cater to tourists and charge accordingly. Walk 5 minutes toward Sirkeci or Eminönü for more authentic prices and local clientele. Seasons Restaurant at Four Seasons Sultanahmet is exceptional for a splurge.

Where to eat

Pre-race breakfast — hotel simit and teabreakfast· $12
Finisher village recovery nutritionlunch
Recovery dinner — traditional Turkish, Sultanahmetdinner· $30

Pre-race breakfast — hotel simit and tea: Turkish breakfast elements (simit, white cheese, bread) are excellent pre-race fuel. Avoid the olives and cured meats — too much fat.

Finisher village recovery nutrition: Begin recovery nutrition within 30 minutes of crossing the line. The finisher bag typically includes fruit, bars, and isotonic drinks.

Recovery dinner — traditional Turkish, Sultanahmet: Turkish lamb dishes are outstanding for protein recovery. Kebab, beyti, or a simple grilled fish with rice covers all recovery nutrition bases.

Recovery & Departure

~$100

Morning

Hagia Sophia — Emperor Justinian's cathedral-mosque1.5 hrs

The Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya) has been a cathedral, mosque, museum, and mosque again. Built in 537 AD by Emperor Justinian, its 31-metre dome was the largest in the world for nearly a millennium. The interior is staggering — gold mosaics, Byzantine marble, and the immense domed space. Currently a working mosque with free entry but modest dress required (headscarf for women, removed shoes for all).

💡 Hagia Sophia is free but crowds are immense — arrive at opening time (08:00 or 09:00) for the best experience. Headscarves are available at the entrance for female visitors. Prayer times cause brief visitor pauses — check the schedule and plan around them.

Grand Bazaar — world's oldest covered market2 hrs

The Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı), established in 1455, is one of the world's oldest and largest covered markets with 4,000+ shops across 61 streets. Buy Turkish ceramics, spices, tea sets, textiles, and gold jewellery. Walking distance is minimal inside the warren of covered lanes — ideal for post-marathon browsing.

💡 Bargaining is expected and normal — start at 30–40% of the asking price. Shopkeepers are friendly and persistent. Accept the offered çay (tea) — refusing is considered mildly rude and the tea is always good. The best quality items are Turkish tea sets, hand-painted Iznik tiles, and gold jewellery.

Afternoon

Spice Market (Egyptian Bazaar) and Bosphorus views1.5 hrs$15

The Mısır Çarşısı (Spice Market) near Eminönü is a 17th-century covered market filled with saffron, dried fruit, nuts, baklava, Turkish delight, and every spice imaginable. Buy gifts and provision for home. The adjacent Eminönü waterfront has spectacular views of the Bosphorus and the Galata Bridge fishermen.

💡 The Spice Market shops sell baklava, Turkish delight, and dried apricots at better prices than tourist-area restaurants. Haggling is less common here than the Grand Bazaar — most prices are fixed or near-fixed.

Transfer to Istanbul Airport (IST) or SAW2.5 hrs$8

Allow 3 hours before departure from IST — the airport is enormous and 45km from the city centre. Havaist buses run from Taksim and various city points. For SAW (Sabiha Gökçen, Asian side), take the shuttle bus from Kadıköy ferry terminal. Allow extra time for Istanbul traffic, which is unpredictable.

💡 IST airport is one of the world's largest — allow 45 minutes from check-in to gate. The new airport has excellent duty-free including Turkish tea sets, carpets, and jewellery. Turkish Delight (lokum) from the airside Ali Muhiddin Hacı Bekir shop is the finest you can buy.

Evening

Departure flight homeVaries

Turkish Airlines, the national carrier, offers exceptional Economy class with excellent food and service. Compression socks essential. Hydrate continuously.

💡 Turkish Airlines hubs at IST connect to over 300 destinations worldwide. If transiting, the Lounge Istanbul (Turkish Airlines CIP lounge) is widely regarded as one of the world's best airport lounges.

Where to eat

Hotel breakfast — full Turkish breakfast spreadbreakfast· $18
Eminönü balık ekmek — grilled fish sandwichlunch· $5
Airport dinner — IST airside Turkish restaurantsdinner· $22

Hotel breakfast — full Turkish breakfast spread: A full Turkish kahvaltı (breakfast) — tomatoes, cucumbers, white cheese, eggs, olives, honey, bread, simit, and çay — is one of the world's great breakfasts and perfect recovery nutrition.

Eminönü balık ekmek — grilled fish sandwich: The balık ekmek (grilled mackerel in bread roll) sold from boats moored at the Galata Bridge is an Istanbul institution. An outstanding and cheap post-marathon lunch.

Airport dinner — IST airside Turkish restaurants: IST has excellent airside dining including full Turkish restaurant menus. A farewell köfte (grilled meatball) plate is fitting.

Practical info

✈️ Getting there

Fly into Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side for direct connections to most major international hubs. Turkish Airlines, the flag carrier, is highly rated and offers direct flights from hundreds of cities. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side is served by low-cost carriers and is convenient for the race start area. IST is connected to the city centre by Havaist express buses (45 minutes, 100 TRY) and the recently extended metro.

🏨 Where to stay

Stay in Sultanahmet (historic, atmospheric, close to finish) or Beyoğlu/Taksim (contemporary, nightlife, closer to expo). Both are excellent for marathon weekend. November is shoulder season in Istanbul — hotel rates are reasonable. Budget $70–$140/night for well-reviewed mid-range hotels. Istanbul offers extraordinary value compared to Western European marathon cities.

🎟️ Ticket advice

Vodafone Istanbul Marathon registration opens approximately 3–4 months before the November race. Entry fee is very affordable — approximately $30–50 USD — reflecting Turkey's cost-of-living advantage. Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis and fills within weeks once international runners discover the two-continents angle. Check the official Vodafone Istanbul Marathon website for the exact opening date.

Local tips

  • ·The Turkish Lira (TRY) is volatile and has depreciated significantly in recent years. Check the exchange rate before travel and consider carrying USD or EUR for larger purchases. Most tourist-area restaurants and hotels accept both.
  • ·Istanbul traffic is among the world's worst — always allow double the expected transit time. The metro and tram network avoids most traffic and is strongly preferred over taxis for predictability.
  • ·Respect mosque etiquette: remove shoes, dress modestly, avoid visiting during prayer times. A headscarf for women is required at Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and all active mosques.
  • ·Istanbul tap water is heavily chlorinated — drink bottled water or use a filter. Large 5L bottles from corner shops (bakkal) cost 10–15 TRY.
  • ·The Istanbul card (İstanbulkart) is a reloadable metro/bus/tram/ferry card available at all metro stations. Use it for all city transport — cash fares on public transport are no longer accepted.
