The Sydney Marathon became a World Marathon Major in 2023, instantly joining the elite six-race series alongside Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, and Chicago. The course is spectacular: runners start at the iconic Sydney Opera House forecourt, cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge with panoramic harbour views, loop through North Sydney's leafy streets, and return to finish at the Opera House in a grand theatrical setting. Held every September in perfect 18โ22ยฐC running conditions, this is the newest and arguably most photogenic Major on the circuit โ and still relatively accessible compared to the ballot-heavy older Majors.
Your 3-day itinerary
Arrival & Race Expo
Expo is typically held Friday and Saturday before the Sunday race. Bring photo ID matching your registration. Luggage storage is available at the ICC for a fee if you arrive on expo day.
Morning
Sydney's international terminal (T1) is 10km south of the CBD. Clear customs and biosecurity โ Australian biosecurity checks can be thorough, budget extra time. The airport is well-connected to the city via train (Airport Link) or taxi/rideshare.
๐ก The Airport Link train takes 13 minutes to Central Station for about $20 AUD (~$13 USD). Opal card or contactless bank card accepted. Taxis to the CBD cost $50โ60 AUD. Rideshare (Uber) is usually cheapest at $30โ40 AUD but can surge on weekends.
The Rocks โ Sydney's historic sandstone precinct adjacent to Circular Quay โ puts you within walking distance of the Opera House start line. CBD hotels on George Street or near Town Hall are also excellent. Drop your bags and orient yourself with a short walk to the Circular Quay waterfront.
๐ก The Rocks and Circular Quay area hotels command a premium but save significant transport time on race morning. For value, look at hotels near Town Hall (10-minute walk to the start) or use the light rail.
Afternoon
The race expo is held at ICC Sydney in Darling Harbour, a short walk or light rail ride from the CBD. Bib collection is mandatory โ no race-day pickup. Present your registration confirmation and photo ID. The expo features major running brands, nutrition stands, and a merchandise store with Sydney Marathon World Marathon Major gear.
๐ก Go on Friday or early Saturday โ Saturday afternoon can get very crowded as the expo closes. The World Marathon Major merchandise sells out fast, especially for international runners seeking the Six Star jacket patch.
Take a gentle pre-race stroll along Circular Quay to preview the race finish area at the Opera House forecourt. Walk under the Harbour Bridge, identify the race start corrals, and photograph the iconic vista. This is a short, flat 1.5km loop โ enough to settle your legs after travel without tiring them.
๐ก Sunset at the Opera House with the bridge lit up behind it is world-class. Bring your camera โ post-race you will be too exhausted to fully appreciate it.
Evening
The Circular Quay and The Rocks precinct has excellent Italian restaurants perfect for pre-race pasta. Choose from penne arrabbiata, spaghetti bolognese, or a simple risotto. Avoid cream-heavy sauces, red wine, and anything fried. End with a banana or sports bar back at the hotel.
๐ก Icebergs Dining Room & Bar at Bondi is legendary, but save it for Day 3. Tonight, keep it simple and nearby. Bacco Osteria e Cucina near The Rocks does excellent pasta.
Where to eat
Airport or in-flight breakfast: Keep it light and familiar on travel day.
Darling Harbour lunch near ICC expo: Darling Harbour has dozens of cafes and restaurants. Try a focaccia or bowl of pasta โ nothing heavy or unusual.
Pre-race pasta dinner โ The Rocks or Circular Quay: Classic carb-load: 8โ10g carbohydrate per kg body weight across the day. White pasta with tomato sauce is ideal.
Race Day โ Sydney Harbour Bridge
Start time: approximately 07:00 AM, with waves released at 2โ5 minute intervals. Elite men and women start in a dedicated professional wave. Wave assignment is colour-coded on your bib and based on predicted finish time โ respect your seeding to avoid congestion on the Harbour Bridge. Course cutoff: 6 hours 30 minutes. The Harbour Bridge section (km 3โ7) is the signature experience โ raise your eyes from the road and take in the 360-degree harbour panorama. It is the only marathon in the world where you cross this bridge on foot as part of a race. The final 400m return to the Opera House forecourt, running alongside the sail-shaped shells with the harbour glittering behind you, is among the most dramatic finishes in distance running.
Morning
Wake 3 hours before your wave start. Eat a familiar breakfast: white toast with honey or banana, porridge with no milk, or a plain bagel with peanut butter if well-trained on it. The Sydney Marathon typically starts between 07:00โ08:00 AM, so a 04:30โ05:00 AM wake-up may be required.
๐ก Sydney September mornings are cool (14โ16ยฐC). Eat earlier than you think you need to, and lay out all race gear the night before to avoid fumbling in the dark.
The race starts on the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House โ one of the great pre-race views in world running. Walk from The Rocks or Circular Quay hotels (5โ10 minutes). Bag drop is at the start area. Find your wave corral based on your bib colour and predicted finish time.
๐ก The Opera House start area is narrow and fills up rapidly. Arrive 60 minutes before your wave. Bag drop queues move slowly โ go early.
Afternoon
From the Opera House steps, runners head north through the CBD and onto the Sydney Harbour Bridge โ the race's defining moment. The bridge offers sweeping views of the harbour, Opera House, and North Shore. The route continues through North Sydney, loops back via the Cahill Expressway, passes through Pyrmont and the CBD, and returns to finish at the Opera House forecourt. The course has moderate undulation โ the bridge climb is the hardest elevation point.
๐ก Run easy on the Harbour Bridge โ the wind can be stiff and it is easy to go too hard on the emotion of the moment. You will pay for it at km 32. Aid stations are every 2โ3km on the World Marathon Major standard. Store Chews/gels at waistband โ the on-course nutrition may not match your training fuel.
Cross the finish line with the Opera House sails and Harbour Bridge as your backdrop โ one of sport's great finishing venues. Collect your finisher medal (the World Marathon Major medallion design is striking), mylar blanket, and finisher bag. The finisher village has food vendors, medical tents, and meeting zones. Photography spots at the finish are exceptional.
๐ก Pre-arrange a meeting point with supporters before the race โ mobile signal is overloaded near the finish. The forecourt meeting areas are signed alphabetically. Walk slowly toward the ferry quay for better phone signal.
Evening
Celebrate your World Marathon Major finish with a proper Sydney meal: grilled barramundi, a seafood platter, or a hearty pasta. The Rocks has multiple restaurants with Harbour Bridge views. A glass of Australian shiraz is a reasonable reward. Prioritise protein and complex carbohydrates.
๐ก Quay Restaurant is Sydney's most celebrated venue but needs booking months ahead. For a more relaxed post-race dinner, The Glenmore Hotel rooftop in The Rocks has stunning bridge views and solid pub food.
Where to eat
Pre-race breakfast โ hotel toast or porridge: Eat 3 hours before your wave start. No fibre, no dairy, no new foods.
Finisher village nutrition โ fruit, water, energy bars: World Marathon Majors provide excellent finisher nutrition bags. Begin recovery fuelling within 20 minutes of crossing the line.
Recovery dinner โ The Rocks waterfront: Grilled barramundi or a seafood linguine are ideal post-marathon choices โ high protein, moderate carbohydrate.
Recovery & Departure
Morning
Take the 333 bus from the CBD to Bondi Beach (25 minutes) for a gentle post-race recovery walk along the famous 1km crescent beach. The salt air, cool sand under your feet, and the gentle sound of surf are excellent recovery therapy. A short dip in the ocean if you are brave enough will help with muscle soreness.
๐ก Wear recovery sandals โ cobblestones near the beach are tough on post-marathon feet. The Bondi Icebergs ocean pool is open for a gentle swim in the ocean-side lap pool.
The 30-minute Manly Ferry from Circular Quay is described by many as the world's finest commuter ferry ride โ and it costs just $8 AUD. Sit on the upper deck for views of the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Fort Denison, and North Harbour as you cross to the beachside suburb of Manly. Legs-up recovery while admiring the scenery.
๐ก Tap your Opal card (or contactless bank card) at the ferry turnstile at Circular Quay Wharf 3. Return ferry runs every 30 minutes.
Afternoon
The Sydney Fish Market in Pyrmont is the largest fish market in the Southern Hemisphere and arguably the best place in Australia for casual seafood. Order freshly shucked Sydney rock oysters, a tray of prawns, or a whole grilled snapper, and eat at the outdoor tables beside the working harbour.
๐ก Take the light rail to Fish Market stop. Go before 13:00 to beat the crowds and get the freshest selection. Bring cash as some stalls do not take cards.
Allow 3 hours before departure โ Sydney Airport domestic and international security can be slow on Sunday afternoons. Take the Airport Link train from Central Station (13 minutes) or a taxi/rideshare from your hotel.
๐ก International departures require check-in 3 hours before. The Airport Link adds an $18 AUD city surcharge on top of the regular fare โ budget accordingly.
Evening
Board your return flight. Wear compression socks for the flight โ DVT risk is elevated for 48โ72 hours post-marathon. Hydrate constantly and walk the aisle regularly.
๐ก Request an aisle seat and keep your finisher medal in your carry-on bag. Sydney Airport T1 international departures has excellent food options in the secure zone.
Where to eat
Bondi cafe breakfast โ avocado toast or eggs: Bondi has some of Australia's best cafes. Porch and Parlour or Sabbaba are popular. Eggs on sourdough with avocado is the quintessential Sydney breakfast.
Sydney Fish Market โ oysters, prawns, fish: Order a mixed seafood tray for maximum protein variety. Sydney rock oysters are a non-negotiable if you eat shellfish.
Airport dinner โ T1 international departures: Sydney Airport has solid restaurant options post-security including Neil Perry's Rockpool Bar & Grill.

Local tips
- ยทGet an Opal card or use your contactless bank card for all Sydney public transport โ single-use tickets are expensive and the card system is seamless.
- ยทSeptember is Sydney's spring โ the weather is nearly perfect for running and sightseeing. Pack a light layer for mornings and evenings.
- ยทSunscreen is essential in Australia even in September โ UV index is high year-round. Apply before the race and carry a sachet in your drop bag.
- ยทTipping is not customary in Australia but 10% is appreciated at sit-down restaurants for good service.
