Chang International Circuit sits on the edge of Buriram, a provincial city in Thailand's Isaan heartland, 8 km from the city centre. The surrounding region is rich in Khmer history โ Phanom Rung and Phimai are two of Southeast Asia's finest ancient temple complexes and both are within day-trip range. The circuit was built to international FIA and FIM Grade 1 standards, and the race atmosphere is a brilliant fusion of Thai warmth, Southeast Asian colour, and passionate motorsport fandom. Race day is October, when humidity is high and afternoon heat is serious.
Your 4-day itinerary
Bangkok โ Buriram Arrival & Night Market
Morning
Nok Air and Thai Lion Air operate direct flights from Bangkok Don Mueang (DMK) to Buriram (BFV). Flight time is 55 minutes. Alternatively drive from BKK โ the journey takes 4โ4.5 hours on the Mittraphap highway but gives you a hire car for the weekend.
๐ก Book BKKโBFV flights 6โ8 weeks ahead for race weekend โ capacity is small and prices spike.
Buriram town centre has decent mid-range hotels; several international brands have opened near the circuit. Check in, drop bags, and explore the immediate area. The city is compact and walkable in the shade โ bring a hat for the midday heat.
Afternoon
Buriram is also famous for its football club. Thunder Castle Stadium (Chang Arena) is adjacent to the circuit โ an impressive 32,000-seat stadium in a city of 40,000. Walk the perimeter and take photos of the stadium with the circuit grandstands behind it โ the juxtaposition is extraordinary.
The circuit gates are open to ticketholders from Day 1. Walk the fan village perimeter, pick up your wristband, check grandstand positions, and get oriented before the sessions begin properly. The venue is well organised and signage is bilingual Thai/English.
๐ก The B1 grandstand at Turn 3 is the best overtaking spot โ bikes brake hard from 290 km/h into the tight hairpin.
Evening
Buriram's night market near the city clock tower comes alive after 18:00. Grilled meat skewers, fresh papaya salad, river prawns, and sticky rice from open-air stalls. Sit at plastic tables with locals โ this is authentic Isaan street food at its finest and cost is negligible.
๐ก Order the gai yang (Isaan grilled chicken) with sticky rice and som tam โ this regional combination is considered the best in Thailand.
Where to eat
Airport or hotel cafรฉ: A simple Thai breakfast โ jok (rice porridge) or khao tom (rice soup) โ sets the tone for the trip.
Buriram night market: Bring cash โ stalls do not take cards. 100โ200 Thai baht per person is plenty.
Practice Day โ Phanom Rung Khmer Temple
Morning
An hour's drive south of Buriram, Phanom Rung is one of the finest Khmer temple complexes outside Cambodia โ a hilltop sanctuary dedicated to Shiva, built between the 10th and 13th centuries. The processional avenue, naga stairways, and the main prasat are extraordinary. Arrive by 08:00 before the heat peaks.
๐ก In April, the rising sun aligns perfectly through all 15 sanctuary doorways โ one of Thailand's great optical phenomena. In October the alignment doesn't occur but the site is atmospheric year-round.
Return to Buriram and head to the circuit for the afternoon practice sessions. FP1 typically runs at 10:45 โ you may catch the tail end if you time the Phanom Rung visit well.
Afternoon
FP2 runs in the afternoon heat โ typically 15:00 local time. October is hot and humid (30โ33ยฐC). The main grandstand has shade canopies; bring water. Riders are already adapting to the high-grip new asphalt surface Buriram is known for.
๐ก The high-speed Turn 5โ6 complex is one of the most spectacular sections โ riders are flat out at over 270 km/h through the gentle left-right sweep.
Chang International Circuit's fan village is one of Asia's best โ the Chang Beer activation tent, the fan parade with Thai traditional costumes, and the evening entertainment stage all begin ramping up after FP2. The atmosphere among the Thai crowd is warm and celebratory.
Evening
The circuit hosts live music on the main stage after practice โ a mix of Thai pop acts and international DJs. Street food vendors around the fan village do excellent grilled meats and noodles. Stay into the evening to soak up the pre-race party atmosphere with 40,000 fans.
Where to eat
Hotel breakfast: A full breakfast before the temple excursion โ you will be walking in heat.
Phanom Rung roadside restaurant: Small restaurants along the road to Phanom Rung serve excellent laab and grilled catfish.
Circuit fan village food stalls: Moo ping (grilled pork skewers), pad kra pao, and grilled river fish from the fan village vendors.
Sprint & Qualifying โ Phimai Historical Park
Morning
75 km southwest of Buriram, Phimai is an ancient Khmer city that predates Angkor Wat. The main sanctuary is beautifully restored and the surrounding moat gives a real sense of the original fortified city. The site opens at 06:00 โ go early for cooler temperatures and softer morning light.
๐ก Phimai National Museum next to the park has excellent artefacts including a famous stone head sculpture โ worth 30 extra minutes.
Drive back to Buriram and arrive at the circuit by 13:00 for the afternoon Sprint Race and Qualifying programme. October race days start later to avoid the worst of the midday heat.
Afternoon
Sprint Race runs at approximately 15:00. With the Thai crowd at full voice, the noise inside Chang International Circuit is extraordinary. The final chicane complex produces consistent late-braking moves โ position yourself in the B2 or B3 grandstands for that section.
๐ก Thai fans are among the most enthusiastic in MotoGP โ the banners, national flags, and organised cheering sections create a tremendous atmosphere.
Q1 and Q2 run in the late afternoon as the track temperature drops and grip improves. The Buriram circuit is known for dramatic qualifying times โ the smooth asphalt suits MotoGP's slick tyres perfectly, regularly producing lap records.
Evening
Head back to town for a proper sit-down meal at one of the restaurants on Jira Road or near the city market. Order a moo krob (crispy pork belly) sharing plate, tom yum talay (seafood hot pot), and sticky rice. A local Singha or Chang beer with dinner is the standard here.
Where to eat
Phimai market stall: Vendors outside the Phimai park gates sell fresh-made khanom krok (coconut pancakes) and Thai iced coffee from 06:00.
Circuit concourse lunch: The main grandstand concourse has good pad thai and grilled chicken stalls.
Buriram town BBQ restaurant: Moo krob sharing plates and seafood tom yum are the highlight.
Race Day โ Afternoon Heat, Post-Race Sunset
Race start is approximately 14:30โ15:00 local time (check MotoGP app). Gates open at 08:00 on race day. Bring rain gear โ October is the tail end of Thailand's wet season and afternoon thunderstorms are possible, though they usually pass quickly.
Morning
Race day in Thailand starts slowly. Visit Buriram's Wat Klang Mueang in the town centre โ the morning monk offering procession at 07:00 is a beautiful and authentic experience. Thai race fans often make merit at the local temple before a big event.
๐ก Remove shoes and dress respectfully at any Thai temple โ knees and shoulders covered.
Buriram's best khao man gai (poached chicken on jasmine rice) is served from a shophouse on Thani Road from 07:30. This is the classic Thai breakfast for a long day โ protein-rich, light, and absolutely delicious.
Afternoon
Arrive at the circuit by 11:00. Moto3 and Moto2 races run mid-morning and at midday. These support classes at Buriram are spectacular โ the tight circuit produces close, multi-rider battles in the Moto3 class. Hydrate constantly in the October heat.
๐ก Bring a hand-held folding fan โ the circuit sells them but they sell out fast on race day.
Race start is typically 14:30 or 15:00 local time. 26 laps of Chang International Circuit in 30ยฐC heat. The Thai crowd's energy from the start line to the final lap is one of MotoGP's most memorable crowd experiences. Watch for tyre degradation drama in the final third of the race.
๐ก The final podium presentation features a traditional Thai ceremony alongside the standard MotoGP format โ a beautiful cultural touch.
Evening
After the podium, walk over to Chang Arena stadium for the extraordinary sunset view โ the stadium and circuit grandstands silhouetted against an orange Isaan sky. If departing this evening, transfer to Buriram Airport or bus station; if staying the night, end with a final night market meal.
Where to eat
Khao man gai shophouse, Thani Road: Order one plate of chicken rice plus a clear chicken soup โ total cost under 80 baht.
Circuit food stalls: Eat before 12:00 โ queues are long once the pre-race crowds arrive.
