🏍️4-day trip itinerary

Americas Grand Prix 2026

Live music, Texas BBQ, and MotoGP thunder at the Americas β€” where the hill section at COTA is the most spectacular in world motorcycling.

Sun, 19 Apr 2026 Circuit of the Americas, Austin 4 days Β· arrive Sat, 18 Apr 2026

Circuit of the Americas sits 12 km southeast of downtown Austin, Texas β€” a purpose-built world-class motorsport facility that is also a genuine entertainment venue. The MotoGP Americas Grand Prix is held in April, when Austin is at its most pleasant: 20–28Β°C, reliably sunny, and alive with the South by Southwest energy that gives the city its character year-round. COTA's iconic Turn 1 hill climb is the most photographed section on the MotoGP calendar. Downtown Austin provides a world-class food, music, and nightlife backdrop that makes this one of the most enjoyable MotoGP weekends in the world.

Your 4-day itinerary

1

Arrival & 6th Street Live Music

~$193

Morning

Arrive Austin-Bergstrom International Airport1.5 hrs$30

AUS is 15 km southeast of downtown β€” very close to COTA. Pre-book an Uber or rideshare; the trip to downtown takes 20–30 minutes. Car hire is an option but parking in Austin during a major event is expensive and limited β€” rideshares to COTA are straightforward.

πŸ’‘ Uber from AUS to downtown Austin costs $20–30 and is the most practical option unless you plan day trips outside the city.

Check in downtown Austin1 hr

Stay downtown β€” the Rainey Street, 6th Street, or South Congress areas put you within Uber range of everything. April rates are high due to event demand; book 4–6 months ahead. Hotels on Rainey Street are the sweet spot for atmosphere and circuit access.

Afternoon

South Congress Avenue exploration2 hrs$20

South Congress (SoCo) is Austin's most characterful street β€” independent boutiques, vintage shops, food trucks, and the iconic Uncommon Objects antique emporium. Walk from the Bouldin Creek Coffee to the Continental Club for a full SoCo afternoon. The view back towards the State Capitol down Congress Avenue is classic Austin.

πŸ’‘ The Continental Club on South Congress has live music from 17:00 β€” get there before 18:30 for a seat.

Barton Springs Pool or Lady Bird Lake kayak1.5 hrs$12

Austin's outdoor culture is central to the city. Barton Springs is a natural spring-fed pool in Zilker Park β€” 26 Β°C water year-round, huge and beautiful. Alternatively, rent a kayak on Lady Bird Lake for an afternoon paddle with the downtown skyline backdrop.

Evening

6th Street live music crawl3 hrs$35

Austin's famous Sixth Street entertainment district is several blocks of live music venues packed together β€” blues, country, rock, and jazz all within a 5-minute walk. Start at Stubb's Amphitheatre (outdoor stage, great atmosphere) and work your way east. This is the world's live music capital living up to its name.

πŸ’‘ Sixth Street gets very busy after 22:00 β€” arrive by 19:30 for easy access and seats at the better venues. Cover charges are typically $5–10 per venue.

Where to eat

Juan in a MillionbreakfastΒ· $14
Hoover's CookinglunchΒ· $22
6th Street bar and food truckdinnerΒ· $30

Juan in a Million: The legendary Don Juan breakfast taco β€” five eggs, bacon, potato, and cheese in a flour tortilla. Austin's definitive breakfast, open from 07:00 on East CΓ©sar ChΓ‘vez.

Hoover's Cooking: Classic Austin soul food β€” fried chicken, black-eyed peas, and cornbread on Manor Road.

6th Street bar and food truck: Graze between venues β€” food trucks on 6th Street do excellent tacos, wings, and loaded fries late into the night.

2

Practice Day β€” COTA Fan Village & Franklin Barbecue

~$303

Morning

Franklin Barbecue (queue and breakfast tacos nearby)2.5 hrs$45

Franklin Barbecue on East 11th Street is the most celebrated BBQ restaurant in the United States. It opens at 11:00 and sells out β€” often by 13:00. The queue begins at 09:00. Send one person to hold the queue while others eat breakfast tacos at Veracruz All Natural next door.

πŸ’‘ The brisket is the headline but the pulled pork and beef ribs are equally remarkable. Order the full tray with all sides. Accept that this is a 2-hour queue experience β€” bring beer from the cooler they allow.

COTA circuit arrival β€” Practice Day1.5 hrs$48

Take the race-day shuttle from Austin Convention Center (or an Uber direct to COTA). Gates open at 08:00 on practice days. COTA's fan village is excellent β€” multiple music stages, sponsor activations, and the giant ferris wheel that gives you an elevated view of the Turn 1 hill.

πŸ’‘ The COTA ferris wheel gives a spectacular aerial view of the Turn 1 hill start β€” a must-do on practice day when queues are shorter.

Afternoon

Free Practice 1 and FP24 hrs

FP1 runs around 10:45, FP2 at 15:00. COTA's Turn 1 blind-crest is the circuit's showpiece β€” riders crest the hill blind at over 270 km/h and brake late for the hairpin. Position yourself on the outside of Turn 1 (grandstand area) for this. The main grandstand covers the full start-finish straight.

πŸ’‘ The Turn 11 complex (the S-curves) is another excellent location β€” fast and technical, with overtaking opportunities into Turn 12.

South Congress brunch post-circuit1.5 hrs$28

Head back to South Congress for a late afternoon bite. Snooze Eatery on South Congress does genuinely exceptional brunch until 14:00 on practice days if you time it right. The pork belly eggs benedict is worth whatever you have to wait for.

Evening

Rainey Street gastropubs and cocktails3 hrs$50

Rainey Street is Austin's best bar street β€” a row of converted bungalows turned into bars with large patios, craft cocktails, and live music. Bar Ilegal, Banger's Sausage House, and Lucille are all consistently excellent. The street fills with the MotoGP paddock crowd and fans on Friday evenings.

Where to eat

Veracruz All Natural breakfast tacosbreakfastΒ· $12
Franklin BarbecuelunchΒ· $45
Rainey Street bar fooddinnerΒ· $40

Veracruz All Natural breakfast tacos: Migas taco (scrambled egg, chips, and salsa) from the food truck while someone holds the Franklin queue.

Franklin Barbecue: Brisket, pulled pork, beef rib, and sides. Queue from 09:00. Absolutely worth it.

Rainey Street bar food: Banger's Sausage House does 40+ rotating craft beers and excellent sausage platters on the patio.

3

Sprint & Qualifying β€” Texas BBQ & Live Music

~$324

Morning

La Barbecue for a second BBQ experience1.5 hrs$40

Austin has multiple James Beard-nominated BBQ restaurants. La Barbecue on Cesar Chavez has a shorter queue than Franklin and is equally celebrated for its brisket and pulled pork. Go early (opens 11:00) if you want a seat.

πŸ’‘ La Barbecue's beef cheeks on Saturdays are exceptional β€” not available every day. Arrive at opening to guarantee them.

COTA circuit β€” Sprint day arrival45 mins

Transfer to COTA for the Sprint and Qualifying programme. The circuit's music stages (headlined by artists on the MotoGP entertainment programme) begin their warm-up sets from 11:00. Sprint day is the busiest on-circuit day for atmosphere.

πŸ’‘ The COTA shuttle from Convention Center runs every 15 minutes on Sprint + Qualifying day. Uber surge pricing on circuit days can be significant β€” the shuttle is better value.

Afternoon

MotoGP Sprint Race30 mins

Sprint Race runs at approximately 15:00. COTA is the most technically demanding circuit on the MotoGP calendar β€” 20 corners, significant elevation change, and a mix of high-speed and slow-speed sections that punish any setup compromise. The Sprint here is always high-attrition and dramatic.

πŸ’‘ Watch the Sprint from the outside of Turn 1 β€” the blind crest combined with the downhill braking zone produces at least one big moment per race.

MotoGP Qualifying30 mins

Q1 and Q2 run in the late afternoon. COTA qualifying laps are visually spectacular β€” the full circuit layout with the Turn 1 hill, the twisty middle sector, and the fast final sector visible from the main grandstand. The big screens show in-lap telemetry which the American crowd loves.

Evening

Texas BBQ dinner and live music at Stubb's3 hrs$75

End the evening at Stubb's Amphitheatre β€” first dinner in the on-site restaurant (beef ribs, jalapeΓ±o cornbread, and brisket chilli), then the outdoor concert. Stubb's has the best outdoor live music venue atmosphere in Austin β€” the stage, the skyline, and the pecan trees overhead.

Where to eat

Hotel breakfast or Torchy's TacosbreakfastΒ· $14
La BarbecuelunchΒ· $40
Stubb's Amphitheatre dinner and concertdinnerΒ· $75

Hotel breakfast or Torchy's Tacos: Torchy's Tacos is Austin's most famous taco chain β€” the Democrat (fried avocado, black bean, and egg) is one of the best breakfast tacos in the city.

La Barbecue: Beef cheeks on Saturday are exceptional β€” arrive at opening.

Stubb's Amphitheatre dinner and concert: Dinner + concert ticket. Book the dinner reservation ahead β€” the restaurant fills on Sprint day evenings.

4

Race Day β€” COTA Thunder & 6th Street Celebration

~$531

Race start is 14:00 local Austin time (CDT, UTCβˆ’5). Gates open 08:00. The COTA shuttle from Austin Convention Center (4th and Trinity) runs every 15 minutes from 07:30 on race day β€” strongly recommended over driving. Return shuttles run for 2 hours after the race.

Morning

Early circuit arrival β€” race day atmosphere build3 hrs

Arrive at COTA by 09:30. The support class races (Moto3 and Moto2) run from 10:00. Race day at COTA is the full entertainment package β€” the music acts on the festival stage, the fan village at peak capacity, and the pre-race production show are all part of the American motorsport spectacle.

πŸ’‘ The pre-race drone show and music performance at COTA is genuinely impressive β€” find a spot with a clean sightline to the main stage from 13:00.

Paddock walk and team merchandise1 hr$60

Race day at COTA gives access to the expanded merchandise village. Team stores and official MotoGP merchandise are extensively stocked. Buy early before the post-race rush depletes stock of the popular items.

Afternoon

MotoGP Race β€” Americas Grand Prix50 mins

Race start is 14:00 local time. 20 laps of COTA. The combination of the hill climb, the tight infield complex, and the long back straight makes this a race with multiple overtaking zones. The Turn 1 first-lap battles are always spectacular β€” riders going 11-wide into the blind crest on lap 1.

πŸ’‘ COTA has one of the loudest sound environments in MotoGP β€” the circuit's natural bowl shape amplifies the exhaust note. Ear protection is optional but appreciated.

Post-race podium and fan zone1.5 hrs

COTA's podium ceremony is part of a full entertainment programme β€” live music, rider interviews, and the fan zone stays open for 90 minutes post-race. The American crowd's energy after a dramatic race finish is enthusiastic and celebratory.

Evening

6th Street post-race celebration3 hrs$50

Return downtown for a final celebration on 6th Street. The bars on Dirty 6th and the Warehouse District all fill with race fans and locals on Sunday nights. Drink local Texas craft beers β€” Austin Beerworks, (512) Brewing, or Jester King if you can find them on tap β€” and enjoy the post-race buzz.

Where to eat

COTA food truck breakfastbreakfastΒ· $16
COTA food court lunchlunchΒ· $25
6th Street bar and late dinnerdinnerΒ· $50

COTA food truck breakfast: COTA's food trucks open from 09:00 on race day β€” migas breakfast tacos and good coffee available.

COTA food court lunch: US circuit food pricing is high β€” budget $20–30 per person for lunch at the circuit.

6th Street bar and late dinner: Many 6th Street venues serve food until 00:30 on Sunday nights β€” burgers, wings, and nachos with live music.

Practical info

✈️ Getting there

Fly into Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS). COTA is 12 km from downtown Austin and 6 km from the airport. Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) from downtown takes 20–25 minutes ($20–30). The official COTA race day shuttle runs from Austin Convention Center ($15 return) and is the best option on race day to avoid traffic. Do not attempt to park at COTA on race day without a pre-purchased parking pass.

🏨 Where to stay

Stay downtown β€” Rainey Street, 6th Street, and South Congress areas are 20–25 minutes from COTA by rideshare. April in Austin is peak event season and hotels are expensive ($300–600/night). Book 4–6 months ahead. Airbnb in the Hyde Park, Bouldin Creek, or East Austin neighbourhoods offers better value.

🎟️ Ticket advice

3-day passes are best value and include practice, Sprint + qualifying, and race day. Buy directly via motogp.com. The Turn 1 grandstand (the hill section) is the most photographed spot in MotoGP β€” book seats there for the race. COTA also sells premium paddock experiences and pit lane walks.
