🌅 Morning
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed St, Abu Dhabi, UAE
Arrive at dawn to beat the crowds and catch the mosque bathed in the golden morning light. The mosque accommodates 40,000 worshippers and is adorned with 82 domes, over 1,000 columns, and the world's largest hand-knotted carpet. Modest dress is mandatory — free abayas for women are provided at the entrance. Spend at least 90 minutes absorbing the intricate detail.
Enter through Gate 3 for the shortest queue. Photography is encouraged — the reflection pool on the north side gives the classic postcard shot.
Heritage Village
Breakwater, off Corniche Road West, Abu Dhabi
A short drive from the mosque, this open-air museum recreates a traditional Emirati village on the Breakwater peninsula. Watch potters, weavers, and blacksmiths demonstrate crafts that predate the oil era. The dhow harbour and falconry displays bring the past vividly to life.
The museum is free but donations are welcome. The gift shop sells genuine Emirati crafts at fair prices — a much better souvenir than airport shops.
☀️ Afternoon
Abu Dhabi Corniche Beach Walk
Corniche Road, Abu Dhabi
Stroll or rent a bike along the 8 km Corniche promenade, one of the finest urban waterfronts in the Middle East. The Blue Flag beach at the southern end has calm, warm water ideal for a swim. The skyline backdrop — a mix of gleaming towers and the distant mosque minaret — is spectacular in the afternoon sun.
Bikes rent for around AED 20 per hour from the kiosks near Nation Towers. The water is noticeably cleaner here than Dubai's beaches.
Qasr Al Hosn (White Fort)
Al Hosn Ave, Abu Dhabi
The oldest stone building in Abu Dhabi and the birthplace of the ruling Al Nahyan family. The fort has been impeccably restored and the museum inside tells the complete story of Abu Dhabi's transformation from a pearl-diving village to a global city. Allow a full hour to do justice to the exhibits.
Audio guides are included in the ticket price and are genuinely excellent — use them.
🌙 Evening
Observation Deck at 300 — Etihad Towers
Etihad Towers, Corniche Road West, Abu Dhabi
On the 74th floor of the tallest of the five Etihad Towers, this observation deck delivers 360-degree views over the entire city, the Arabian Gulf, and — on a clear winter evening — the distant outline of Dubai. Sunset here is magnificent.
Your entry ticket includes a drink at the bar. Book ahead online — queues at the desk can be long on weekends.
Marina & Waterfront Dinner Stroll
Abu Dhabi Marina, Al Bateen
Walk down to the marina area and browse the outdoor dining terraces overlooking the yacht harbour before settling on your dinner restaurant.
🍽️ Meals
Al Mina Fish Market & Restaurants
Emirati seafood · $30 · Pick fresh fish at the market stalls and pay a nearby restaurant a small fee to cook it your way — uniquely local experience.
Li Beirut at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers
Lebanese · $100 · Elegant Lebanese cuisine with floor-to-ceiling Gulf views. The mezze spread and grilled hammour are outstanding.

🌅 Morning
Louvre Abu Dhabi
Saadiyat Island Cultural District, Abu Dhabi
Jean Nouvel's masterwork sits on its own island and is arguably the most beautiful museum building in the world. The 'rain of light' dome — 180 metres wide and made from 8,000 interlocking geometric panels — creates an ethereal dappled light inside. The permanent collection spans 12 chapters of human civilisation, cleverly mixing objects from different cultures of the same period. Give yourself a full two hours minimum.
Book tickets online to skip the queue. Audio guides are worth every dirham. Visit mid-morning on a weekday for the fewest crowds.
☀️ Afternoon
Ferrari World Abu Dhabi
Yas Island, Abu Dhabi
The world's first Ferrari-branded theme park sits under the largest space-frame structure ever built. Formula Rossa is the headline act — the world's fastest roller coaster hits 240 km/h in under five seconds. Flying Aces is arguably a better ride for the sustained G-forces. The park also includes a genuine F1 simulator and the Pit Stop Challenge team competition.
Buy the all-rides wristband. Go straight to Formula Rossa when the park opens — it draws the longest queues. Lockers for loose items are mandatory on the big coasters.
Yas Marina Circuit Walkthrough
Yas Island Circuit, Abu Dhabi
Adjacent to Ferrari World, the F1 circuit that hosts the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix can be explored on foot or by buggy. The Yas Viceroy Hotel straddles the circuit — its illuminated exoskeleton changes colour at night. Self-guided walking tours are available when no race event is scheduled.
Check the calendar — on F1 race weekends the track is off-limits, but the atmosphere is extraordinary.
🌙 Evening
Yas Mall & Yas Waterworld Evening
Yas Island, Abu Dhabi
Wind down with a stroll through Yas Mall's outdoor terraces or catch a brief visit to Yas Waterworld's illuminated entrance area. The mall has over 370 stores and good food court options for a casual meal before heading back.
🍽️ Meals
Café del Mar Abu Dhabi
Mediterranean · $60 · Beachclub restaurant on Yas Island with Gulf views — perfect between Louvre and Ferrari World.
Cipriani Yas Island
Italian · $120 · Waterfront Italian in the Ferrari pit building — fitting end to a Yas Island day. Reservations essential.

🌅 Morning
Eastern Mangroves Kayaking
Eastern Mangroves Promenade, Al Salam St, Abu Dhabi
Paddle through Abu Dhabi's protected mangrove forest with a guided kayak tour. The mangroves are an extraordinary ecosystem — herons, flamingos, and crabs are regular sightings. The still water and cool morning air make this one of the most peaceful experiences in the UAE. Guides provide all equipment and safety briefing.
Book with Abu Dhabi Adventure (part of the Eastern Mangroves Hotel) for the most knowledgeable guides. Wear sunscreen and bring a water bottle.
Al Wathba Camel Racecourse
Al Wathba, Abu Dhabi (40km from city centre)
Catch a morning race session at one of the UAE's most authentic cultural experiences. Races typically run from 7am on winter mornings (Thursday and Friday are best). The jockeys are now robot riders — lightweight remote-controlled devices that replaced child jockeys — which makes for a surreal and fascinating spectacle. Emirati owners and trainers welcome respectful visitors.
This requires an early start and your own transport — hire a taxi for the half-day. Races finish by 9am as the heat builds. Check the Dubai and Abu Dhabi Racing Calendar for scheduled events.
☀️ Afternoon
Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital
Sweihan Road, Al Wathba, Abu Dhabi
The world's largest falcon hospital treats over 6,000 birds annually and offers public tours that are unlike anything else in the Gulf. You will hold a falcon, watch the surgical team at work, and learn about the ancient Emirati tradition of falconry — a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage practice.
The hospital and the racecourse are both in Al Wathba — combine them in a single half-day taxi run to save significant travel time and cost.
Al Ain Oasis (day excursion option) or Saadiyat Beach Club
Saadiyat Island Beach Club, Abu Dhabi / Al Ain Oasis, Al Ain
If you prefer relaxation on your final afternoon, the Saadiyat Beach Club offers a beautiful stretch of white sand and calm turquoise water. Alternatively, the UNESCO-listed Al Ain Oasis — 160km inland — makes an extraordinary half-day excursion through ancient falaj irrigation channels and 147,000 date palms.
Al Ain is worth the drive if you haven't been before — the heat is milder in winter and the oasis is genuinely magical.
🌙 Evening
Farewell Dinner — Emirates Palace Terrace
Emirates Palace Hotel, Corniche Road West, Abu Dhabi
End your Abu Dhabi trip in palatial style. The Emirates Palace hotel's terrace restaurants offer an unmatched setting — gold-flecked architecture, manicured gardens, and the soft glow of hundreds of lanterns. The Mezlai restaurant inside serves exceptional Emirati cuisine if you want to make your last meal truly local.
Even if you don't stay here, the hotel is open to guests for dining. Order the camel milk cappuccino and the Emirati slow-cooked lamb — both iconic.
🍽️ Meals
Hakkasan Abu Dhabi
Chinese dim sum · $85 · Inside the Emirates Palace — excellent weekend dim sum brunch in an extraordinary setting.
Mezlai — Emirates Palace
Emirati · $140 · One of the only fine-dining Emirati restaurants in the world. Saloona lamb stew and luqaimat dessert are essential orders.

💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook
- Dress modestly when visiting mosques and souqs — shoulders and knees covered. The Grand Mosque provides abayas for women free of charge.
- Friday is the holy day — the Grand Mosque is closed to non-Muslim visitors until after noon prayers (around 1:30pm). Plan accordingly.
- Ramadan transforms the city — iftar meals are extraordinary communal events, but daytime activities slow significantly. Check dates before booking.
- Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory — 10% in restaurants if service charge is not already included.
