Cards: Cards accepted in hotels and restaurants in tourist areas. Cash preferred everywhere else. US Dollars accepted at many tourist businesses.
ATMs: BBVA, Santander, and Citibanamex ATMs reliable. Withdraw from ATMs inside banks or supermarkets — street ATMs have higher skimming risk.
Tipping
10–20% in restaurants. Hotel staff: MXN 20–50. Taxi: round up. Tips are an important part of income for service workers.

🔌Electricity & plugs
127V — close enough to 120V that US devices work fine. Devices from 230V countries need a voltage converter.
🤝Local customs & etiquette
- 1.Mexicans are warm and hospitable — engage with locals and you will be welcomed.
- 2.Meal times are later: lunch 14:00–16:00, dinner 21:00+. The midday comida is the main meal.
- 3.Never rush a meal — eating is a social event and taking your time is expected.
- 4.Altitude: Mexico City is at 2,285m — take it easy for the first day if coming from sea level.
- 5.Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos, Nov 1–2) is a joyful family celebration — if visiting during this period, engage respectfully.
📶SIM cards & connectivity
Local SIM: Telcel has the best coverage nationwide. AT&T Mexico and Movistar are alternatives. SIMs at OXXO convenience stores and airports.
WiFi: Good in hotels and major cafés in cities. OXXO convenience stores have free WiFi.
🛡️Safety
Mexico City's tourist areas (Roma, Condesa, Polanco, Centro) are generally safe. Avoid using your phone visibly on the street. Check current travel advisories for specific states.
💉Health
Do not drink tap water. Bottled water everywhere. Montezuma's Revenge (stomach illness) — eat at busy, reputable places. Hepatitis A vaccination recommended.
