Travelling to an English-speaking country?
If English isn't your first language, a few weeks of practice before you arrive builds real confidence — especially for asking directions, ordering in restaurants, and understanding regional accents.
Essential in United Kingdom
- 1.Excuse me, could you help me? — Polite way to approach strangers

🔌Electricity & plugs
The UK plug (Type G) is unique. All other countries need an adapter. The fused plug design is considered the safest in the world.
🤝Local customs & etiquette
- 1.Queueing is a cultural institution — never jump a queue under any circumstances.
- 2.Hold doors open for people behind you; failing to do so is considered impolite.
- 3.'Sorry' is used reflexively and constantly — do not read it as an actual apology.
- 4.Pubs have a bar-ordering system — you go to the bar to order and pay, rather than table service.
- 5.Driving on the left. Look right first when crossing — the traffic direction often catches visitors off guard.
📶SIM cards & connectivity
Local SIM: EE, Vodafone, O2, and Three are the major operators. Three has the best international roaming. SIMs available at airports, supermarkets, and phone shops.
WiFi: Free WiFi in most cafés, pubs, and hotels. The London Underground (Tube) has WiFi at stations.
🛡️Safety
Generally safe. In London and major cities, be vigilant in crowded tourist areas (Piccadilly, Oxford Street, Camden). Bike theft is common — always lock up.
💉Health
NHS provides emergency care to all visitors at no charge. Non-emergency care requires payment or travel insurance.
