Day-by-day plan
Arrival & Positano
Wednesday, June 2
Est. spend
$280
per person
🌅 Morning
Arrive via Naples Airport and transfer to Positano
Naples International Airport
Naples is the nearest major airport, about 1.5-2 hours by car or private transfer to Positano along winding coastal roads — book a transfer rather than self-driving if unfamiliar with the route's hairpin turns.
A private transfer or the SITA bus are both far less stressful than renting a car for the coastal drive, which is narrow, winding, and intimidating for first-time visitors.
☀️ Afternoon
Positano's cliffside streets and beach
Positano, Amalfi Coast
Positano's pastel-coloured houses tumble down a steep hillside to a pebble beach (Spiaggia Grande) — one of the most photographed towns in Italy, and genuinely as beautiful as the photos suggest.
Wear comfortable shoes — Positano is built almost entirely on steep staircases, with very few flat streets.
🌙 Evening
Sunset dinner overlooking the bay
Positano
Positano's restaurants, many built into the cliffside with terraced sea views, are perfectly positioned for a sunset dinner over the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Book a table with a view well in advance — the best-positioned restaurants fill up days ahead in peak season.
🍽️ Meals
Airport or travel snacks
Italian · $10
Positano beach café lunch
Italian (Campanian) · $30

The Path of the Gods Hike
Thursday, June 3
Est. spend
$250
per person
🌅 Morning
Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) hike
Path of the Gods, Amalfi Coast
A roughly 8km cliffside trail connecting Bomerano to Positano (or Nocelle), with continuous, jaw-dropping views over the coastline far below — widely considered one of the best day hikes in Italy.
Start early to beat both the heat and the crowds — the trail gets genuinely busy by mid-morning in peak summer.
☀️ Afternoon
Descend to Nocelle and rest
Nocelle, Amalfi Coast
The trail ends with a long staircase descent into Nocelle, a tiny hilltop hamlet above Positano — a well-earned rest with a granita or coffee before heading back down to the coast.
A local bus connects Nocelle back down to Positano if your legs need a break after the hike's final descent.
🌙 Evening
Relaxed dinner in Positano
Positano
A well-deserved, relaxed dinner back in Positano after a demanding but rewarding day of hiking.
🍽️ Meals
Pre-hike breakfast
Italian · $12 · Eat properly before the hike — there are very limited food options along the trail itself.
Nocelle granita and snack
Italian · $12
Positano dinner
Italian · $60
Amalfi Town & Ravello
Friday, June 4
Est. spend
$280
per person
🌅 Morning
Ferry to Amalfi town
Amalfi, Amalfi Coast
A scenic 30-minute ferry ride from Positano to Amalfi, the coast's namesake town, with its striped Duomo and lively waterfront piazza.
Ferries offer far better views of the coastline than the bus, and avoid the famously congested coastal road entirely.
Amalfi Duomo and historic centre
Piazza Duomo, Amalfi
The striped Cathedral of Saint Andrew dominates Amalfi's main piazza, with an Arab-Norman cloister and crypt beneath — the town's centuries-old maritime history is evident throughout.
☀️ Afternoon
Bus to Ravello
Ravello, Amalfi Coast
A short, winding bus ride up into the hills to Ravello, perched higher above the coast than any other major town, with Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone's gardens offering arguably the single best panoramic view of the entire coastline.
Villa Cimbrone's 'Terrace of Infinity' is the definitive Amalfi Coast viewpoint — genuinely worth the detour up the hill.
🌙 Evening
Return to Positano and dinner
Positano
Return via bus and ferry to Positano in the evening for a relaxed final dinner.
🍽️ Meals
Amalfi breakfast
Italian · $12
Ravello lunch with a view
Italian · $40 · Several restaurants in Ravello offer terraces with the same spectacular views as the villa gardens.
Positano dinner
Italian · $60
Final Beach Morning & Departure
Saturday, June 5
Est. spend
$280
per person
🌅 Morning
Final beach morning in Positano
Fornillo Beach, Positano
A relaxed final morning on Spiaggia Grande or the quieter Fornillo beach a short walk further along the coast.
Fornillo Beach is noticeably quieter and less crowded than the main Spiaggia Grande — a good choice for a calmer final morning.
☀️ Afternoon
Final shopping and lunch
Positano
Positano is known for handmade leather sandals and limoncello — a final lunch and souvenir shopping before the journey back to Naples.
🌙 Evening
Transfer to Naples Airport
Naples International Airport
Allow at least 3.5 hours before an international flight given the coastal road's traffic and travel time back to Naples.
🍽️ Meals
Hotel breakfast
Italian · $14
Positano lunch
Italian · $40
Airport food
Italian/International · $18

💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook
- Use ferries between coastal towns rather than the bus or driving where possible — the coastal road is narrow, winding, and frequently congested, while ferries are faster and far more scenic.
- Avoid self-driving the Amalfi Coast road unless genuinely confident with narrow, hairpin mountain roads — a private transfer or bus removes the stress entirely.
- Start the Path of the Gods hike early in the morning to beat both the summer heat and the crowds, which build significantly by mid-morning.
- August is dramatically overcrowded and expensive — May-June and September offer a much more relaxed experience at lower cost.
- Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes throughout — nearly every town on the coast is built on steep staircases rather than flat streets.
