Day-by-day plan
Arrival & Nyhavn
Sunday, June 20
Est. spend
$220
per person
🌅 Morning
Arrive at Copenhagen Airport (CPH)
Copenhagen Airport
The Metro and regional trains both connect CPH directly to central Copenhagen in about 15 minutes — one of the fastest, most reliable airport links in Europe.
Buy a Copenhagen Card if planning to visit several museums — it covers public transit and free entry to most major attractions.
☀️ Afternoon
Nyhavn harbourfront
Nyhavn, Copenhagen
Copenhagen's most photographed spot — a 17th-century harbour lined with brightly coloured townhouses, now full of restaurants and moored historic ships.
The canal-front restaurants are priced for the view — eat a few streets back and return to Nyhavn just for the photo and a drink.
🌙 Evening
Torvehallerne food market dinner
Frederiksborggade 21, Copenhagen
Copenhagen's premier indoor food market, with stalls covering everything from Danish smørrebrød (open sandwiches) to international cuisine and natural wine.
Arrive by 6pm — popular stalls sell out of their best items by early evening.
🍽️ Meals
Airport or hotel breakfast
Danish · $14
Smørrebrød lunch
Danish · $20 · Open rye-bread sandwiches topped with herring, liver pâté, or roast beef — the classic Danish lunch.
Torvehallerne dinner
Danish/International · $40
Cycling Copenhagen
Monday, June 21
Est. spend
$230
per person
🌅 Morning
Rent a bike and ride the city
Donkey Republic or hotel bike rental, Copenhagen
Copenhagen is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world, with dedicated cycle lanes covering nearly every street — renting a bike for the day is the most authentic way to experience it like a local.
Stay firmly in the cycle lane and signal turns — Copenhagen cyclists move fast and expect predictable behaviour from others on the path.
☀️ Afternoon
Christianshavn and Christiania
Christianshavn, Copenhagen
Cycle to Christianshavn's canal district, with its own mini version of Amsterdam's canals, then through Freetown Christiania, a self-governing alternative community established in 1971.
Photography is discouraged in parts of Christiania, particularly Pusher Street — respect the posted signs.
🌙 Evening
Dinner in Vesterbro
Kødbyen, Vesterbro
Copenhagen's former meatpacking district, now one of the city's trendiest neighbourhoods, with converted warehouse restaurants and bars in the Kødbyen (Meatpacking District).
🍽️ Meals
Bakery breakfast
Danish · $10 · A proper Danish pastry (wienerbrød, the original 'Danish') from a local bakery.
Christianshavn café lunch
Danish · $20
Kødbyen dinner
Danish/International · $50
The Little Mermaid & Tivoli Gardens
Tuesday, June 22
Est. spend
$230
per person
🌅 Morning
The Little Mermaid statue and the Citadel
Langelinie, Copenhagen
Copenhagen's most famous (if modestly sized) statue, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, sits at the edge of Kastellet, a star-shaped 17th-century fortress still in military use.
Manage expectations — the statue is genuinely small. The surrounding Kastellet fortress walk is arguably the better part of the visit.
☀️ Afternoon
Rosenborg Castle and the King's Garden
Øster Voldgade 4A, Copenhagen
A Renaissance castle housing the Danish crown jewels, surrounded by Copenhagen's oldest royal garden — a calm, well-preserved historic stop in the city centre.
The King's Garden itself is free to walk even without a castle ticket — a popular local picnic spot in summer.
🌙 Evening
Tivoli Gardens
Vesterbrogade 3, Copenhagen
One of the oldest amusement parks in the world (opened 1843), with classic rides, beautifully landscaped gardens, and illuminated at night — said to have partly inspired Walt Disney's vision for Disneyland.
Visit in the evening when the gardens are illuminated — genuinely magical and a completely different atmosphere from the daytime.
🍽️ Meals
King's Garden picnic breakfast
Danish · $12
Rosenborg café lunch
Danish · $20
Tivoli Gardens dinner
Danish/International · $40 · Tivoli has several genuinely good restaurants inside the park, not just fairground food.
Design Museum & Departure
Wednesday, June 23
Est. spend
$200
per person
🌅 Morning
Designmuseum Danmark
Bredgade 68, Copenhagen
A museum dedicated to Danish design's global influence, covering furniture, fashion, and industrial design from the mid-century to today — a genuinely fascinating stop for anyone interested in why 'Scandinavian design' is a global term.
☀️ Afternoon
Final shopping on Strøget
Strøget, Copenhagen
One of Europe's longest pedestrian shopping streets, running through the historic centre, with both high-street and Danish design brands — a good final stop before departure.
🌙 Evening
Transfer to Copenhagen Airport
Copenhagen Airport
Allow at least 2.5 hours before an international flight. The Metro or train direct from the city centre takes about 15 minutes.
🍽️ Meals
Hotel breakfast
Danish · $14
Strøget lunch
Danish/International · $25
Airport food
Danish/International · $18

💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook
- Cycling is the best way to experience Copenhagen — the city has more bikes than cars and dedicated, well-maintained cycle lanes on nearly every street.
- Stay alert to cyclists when walking — Copenhagen's cycle lanes move fast and pedestrians stepping into them without looking is a common visitor mistake.
- Denmark is essentially cashless — bring a card with contactless enabled rather than relying on cash.
- Smørrebrød (open rye sandwiches) is the quintessential Danish lunch — try it from a market stall rather than a touristy restaurant for better value.
- Tivoli Gardens is best visited in the evening when illuminated — the atmosphere shifts entirely after dark.
