Dawn Creek Fishing & Deira Fish Market
Friday, January 15
Est. spend
$120
per person
🌅 Morning
Deira Fish Market at 5am
Al Ras, Deira — near the abra station
Dubai's wholesale fish market opens at 4am — by 5am it's at full roar. Kingfish, hamour (grouper), tuna, barracuda, shrimp, crab, lobster, squid. Fishermen unloading directly onto ice. One of the most authentic experiences in the entire city.
Take a taxi in the dark — the market is near Deira Old Souk. You can buy fish directly and take it to a neighbouring restaurant to cook for a fee. Dress for an early cold morning.
Creek fishing with a local captain
Bur Dubai Abra Station, Creek, Dubai
The Dubai Creek still has working fishermen — several operators offer 3-hour creek fishing sessions from wooden boats at dawn. You fish for smaller species (jack, catfish, rabbit fish) using hand lines, old-school style.
Book through Dubai Fishing or Bluewater Fishing — both offer early morning creek trips with equipment included. Expect to catch and release unless you arrange cooking in advance.
☀️ Afternoon
Explore Deira Old Souk and rest
Deira Old Souk, Dubai
After the early start, walk the Old Souk — spice market, gold market, abra crossing — then return to the hotel for a long afternoon rest before the next day's offshore trip.
🌙 Evening
Seafood dinner at Bu Qtair, Jumeirah
2nd December Street (Beach Road), Jumeirah 3
The most famous fish restaurant in Dubai — a shack on the beach that's been serving grilled hamour, kingfish, and shrimp since the 1980s. No frills, plastic chairs, extraordinary fish. Bring cash.
Cash only. Choose your fish from the display — they weigh it and charge by the kilo. The masala sauce on the hamour is the reason people drive across the city for this place.
🍽️ Meals
Karak chai and samboosa at market
Emirati · $4 · Tea and pastry from a stall near the fish market — the authentic Dubai fisherman's breakfast.
Noodle House, Emaar Beachfront
Asian · $22 · Good value, quick, near the creek area.
Bu Qtair
Seafood/Emirati · $30 · Cash only. Price by weight — budget AED 100 ($27) per person.
Deep Sea Fishing — Arabian Gulf
Saturday, January 16
Est. spend
$250
per person
🌅 Morning
Deep sea fishing charter — full day
Dubai Marina or Port Rashid — book through Dubai Fishing Trips or Bluewater Fishing
Charter a fishing boat from Dubai Marina or Port Rashid for a full-day offshore trip. Target species: kingfish (the best eating fish in the Gulf), barracuda, queenfish, yellowfin tuna, and wahoo. The Gulf is shallow near shore — you head 20–40km offshore for the big fish.
Full-day charter (6am–2pm) for two people costs AED 800–1,200 ($220–330) including equipment, bait, and a local captain. Catch and release or keep your fish — the captain will usually clean it for you. Most good operators listed at dubaifishingtrips.com.
☀️ Afternoon
Cook your catch
Dubai Marina restaurants — ask your charter captain for the best option
Several restaurants in Dubai Marina and JBR will cook your own fish for a small kitchen fee — call ahead and arrange it. Nothing beats grilled kingfish you caught yourself, cooked to order.
Catch and cook is a genuine experience in Dubai. Restaurants typically charge AED 50–80 ($14–22) per person for the cooking service. The captain can usually call ahead.
🌙 Evening
Sunset drinks at Marina Walk
Dubai Marina Walk, Dubai Marina
Recovery evening — cold Heineken (or non-alcoholic equivalent) at any marina bar while watching the superyachts. The evening light on the towers is excellent.
🍽️ Meals
On-boat packed breakfast
Various · $0 · Most charters include a packed breakfast — water, dates, fruit. Eat before 6am as the sea can be choppy.
Cook your catch
Seafood · $30 · The freshest possible fish, grilled or spiced your way.
Marina bar and light dinner
Various · $40 · After a full day on the water, light works better than heavy. The Marina has good Lebanese and sushi options.
Dhow Overnight & Departure
Sunday, January 17
Est. spend
$165
per person
🌅 Morning
Traditional fishing dhow — half-day charter
Deira Abra Station or Port Rashid, Dubai
A traditional wooden dhow with an Emirati or Pakistani captain doing things the old way — hand lines, no electronics, reading the sea by experience. More atmosphere, slower pace than a modern charter.
Dhow fishing targets different species — the captains focus on reef fish and use traditional methods. Ask specifically for a traditional dhow rather than a modern fibreglass boat.
☀️ Afternoon
Gold Souk and departure shopping
Gold Souk, Deira, Dubai
Final afternoon in Deira — the Gold Souk (open until 10pm) is the best place for fishing-themed gifts: pearl jewellery (Gulf pearls were Dubai's original industry), gold pieces, and Dubai-specific souvenirs.
Gulf pearl jewellery (cultured, not wild) is a genuinely meaningful Dubai souvenir — the pearl diving industry built the city before oil.
🌙 Evening
Departure — Dubai International Airport
Dubai International Airport
Allow 3 hours for international departures. The Metro Red Line goes directly to T1 and T3.
Emirates lounge at T3 is one of the best in the world if you're flying Emirates. Even without business class, a day pass is available.
🍽️ Meals
Karak breakfast at Al Bait Café
Emirati · $6 · The Emirati version of milky tea with cardamom — the best start to any morning in Dubai.
Al Fanar Restaurant, Dubai Festival City
Emirati · $35 · The best traditional Emirati restaurant in Dubai — machboos (spiced rice with fish), harees, and luqaimat for dessert.
Airport or hotel departure meal
Various · $20
Before you go
📅 Best time to visit

💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook
- The UAE weekend is Saturday–Sunday. Friday is a working day but Jumu'ah prayers (12:30–1:30pm) mean brief closures.
- Modest dress in souks and public areas — shoulders and knees covered outside the marina/beach.
- The best fishing captains are booked weeks ahead in November–February peak season. Book early.
- Sea conditions change — have a backup day planned in case weather makes offshore fishing unsafe.
- The Dubai Creek (Khor Dubai) is protected and full of birdlife — binoculars make the dawn boat worth more than just the fishing.
