Before you go
📅 Best time to visit
November to April, the dry season, offers the most comfortable temperatures and clear volcano views; May to October is greener but rainier with afternoon downpours.
🛂 Visas
Most Western nationalities (US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia) receive a 90-day CA-4 tourist permit on arrival covering Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador; a tourist card fee is paid at the airport.
💱 Currency
The córdoba (NIO) is the local currency, though US dollars are widely accepted in Granada; carry small denomination dollars and córdobas for markets and taxis where change can be scarce.
🆘 Emergency numbers
police: 118
ambulance: 128
💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook
- Horse-drawn carriage rides around the plaza are touristy but a fun way to see the colonial architecture
- Tap water is generally not recommended for drinking — stick to bottled or filtered water
- Many ATMs run out of cash on weekends, so withdraw córdobas early in your trip
- Bring cash for the Mombacho Reserve entrance and isleta boat tours, as cards are rarely accepted
- Granada is one of the safer Nicaraguan cities for tourists, but stick to well-lit streets at night
