Arrival — Ferry Transfer & Dive Shop Registration
Monday, September 6
Est. spend
$295
per person
🌅 Morning
Ferry from Chumphon or Koh Samui
Chumphon Pier or Na Thon Pier, Koh Samui
Take the night train from Bangkok to Chumphon (departs ~19:00, arrives ~05:00) then the morning ferry to Koh Tao (2.5–3 hrs), or fly to Koh Samui and take the high-speed ferry (1.5 hrs). The journey is part of the experience.
Lomprayah is the most reliable high-speed catamaran operator. Book in advance November–February (high season).
Check In & Island Orientation
Sairee Beach, Koh Tao, Surat Thani 84360
Check in at your guesthouse or bungalow on or near Sairee Beach — the main strip of the island and hub for dive shops. Drop your bags and take a 20-minute walk to orient yourself: the island is small enough to understand in one walk.
Stay within 5 minutes of your chosen dive shop — early morning dives require a 07:00 kit-up and you don't want a long commute.
☀️ Afternoon
Dive Shop Selection & Registration
Sairee Beach Dive Shops, Koh Tao
Visit 2–3 dive shops on Sairee Beach to compare equipment condition, instructor ratios, and prices before committing. Ask to see the dive equipment, check the cylinders' test dates, and ask about class sizes. Register and pay for the AOWD course.
A PADI 5-Star dive centre has met higher standards for training, equipment, and safety. Look for the 5-Star plaque. Good options include Crystal Dive, Big Blue Diving, and Monsoon Gym & Dive.
Theory & Briefing — AOWD Course Intro
Your chosen dive shop, Sairee Beach
Complete the AOWD digital eLearning (ideally done before arrival) or sit the classroom briefing at the dive shop. Review the five adventure dive options and confirm your choices with your instructor. Equipment check and fit.
Complete the PADI eLearning online before arriving (included with most course registrations or available separately at padi.com). Saves 3–4 hours of classroom time.
🌙 Evening
Sairee Beach Sunset & Dive Community
Sairee Beach, Koh Tao
Sairee Beach at sunset is the social centre of Koh Tao. The beach bars fill with divers from around the world comparing certifications, stories, and plans. Order a Chang beer and introduce yourself — you'll find dive buddies for the week.
Go easy on alcohol tonight — you are diving at 08:00 tomorrow and PADI requires no alcohol within 12 hours of diving.
🍽️ Meals
In-transit or ferry snacks
Thai · $5 · Ferries from Chumphon sell noodle soup and instant coffee on board.
Thai lunch near Sairee Beach
Thai · $8 · Pad thai or khao man gai (chicken rice) from a local restaurant costs 80–120 THB. Avoid tourist-facing restaurants on the main strip.
Beach bar dinner
Thai / International · $12 · Sairee Beach has excellent seafood BBQ restaurants. Grilled barracuda or whole snapper with sticky rice.
AOWD Dives 1 & 2 — Deep Dive & Underwater Navigation
Tuesday, September 7
Est. spend
$84
per person
🌅 Morning
AOWD Adventure Dive 1 — Deep Dive (to 30m)
Southwest Pinnacle or Chumphon Pinnacle, Koh Tao
The mandatory deep dive adventure: descend to 30m and experience depth effects — colour absorption, buoyancy changes at depth, nitrogen narcosis awareness. Instructors demonstrate an underwater colour card to show how red disappears below 10m. A technically challenging and fascinating dive.
Eat a light breakfast before the dive — nothing heavy within 2 hours. Crackers, banana, and water is ideal.
AOWD Adventure Dive 2 — Underwater Navigation
Koh Tao Bay or Aow Leuk, Koh Tao
The mandatory navigation adventure: compass headings, natural navigation using reef features, sand ripples, and coral formations. The skill of knowing where you are underwater is what separates independent divers from instructor-led followers.
Focus on the compass bearing on your descent — the return leg is the hard part. Natural navigation backup: the sandy floor deepens as you move offshore.
☀️ Afternoon
Nang Yuan Island Snorkel
Koh Nang Yuan, 5km northwest of Koh Tao
Three small islands connected by a beautiful white sandbar, a 10-minute boat ride from Koh Tao. Exceptional snorkelling on the shallow reef between the islands — brain coral, giant clams, and dense fish populations. A gentler experience after the morning's certification dives.
Koh Nang Yuan has an entry fee (100 THB) and bans plastic water bottles on the island. Bring a reusable bottle.
Post-Dive Equipment Rinse & Log Book Entry
Your dive shop, Sairee Beach
Return equipment to the dive shop, rinse salt water off gear, and complete your dive log entries with depth, time, air consumption, and conditions. Good log book habits now will serve you throughout your diving life.
Ask your instructor to sign your log book entries while the details are fresh — they are your certification evidence.
🌙 Evening
Dinner at Koh Tao Dive Community Restaurants
Sairee Beach strip, Koh Tao
The area around Sairee Beach has excellent Thai and international restaurants catering to the dive community — healthy, affordable, and social. Try Family Restaurant for authentic Thai or Zanzibar for something different. Debrief the day's dives over dinner.
Dive computers need to be set aside after diving — check surface interval requirements before tomorrow's dives. Flying within 18–24 hours of diving is not permitted (PADI guidelines).
🍽️ Meals
Light pre-dive breakfast
Thai / Café · $6 · Light breakfast 2 hours before diving: banana, crackers, juice. Many dive shops have a small café.
Post-dive lunch at dive shop café
Thai · $8 · Most dive shops serve simple lunches between morning and afternoon dives. Fried rice or noodle soup.
Dinner at Sairee Beach restaurant
Thai · $15 · Green curry, massaman, or fresh grilled fish. Chang or Leo beer is the local standard.
AOWD Dives 3 & 4 — Adventure Electives, then Afternoon Free
Wednesday, September 8
Est. spend
$77
per person
🌅 Morning
AOWD Adventure Dive 3 — Peak Performance Buoyancy
Koh Tao dive sites
The most universally recommended elective: mastering neutral buoyancy so you hover motionless at any depth without touching the reef. Divers who complete PPB dive longer (less air consumption), see more marine life (calm approach), and protect reefs. Transformative for most divers.
PPB is the single most impactful skill improvement available in recreational diving. If you can only choose one elective, choose this one.
AOWD Adventure Dive 4 — Underwater Photography or Fish ID
Koh Tao dive sites
Choose your fourth adventure dive: Underwater Photography (learn composition, strobe positioning, and macro technique) or Fish Identification (learn to identify 20+ tropical fish species using slate cards). Both are highly enjoyable electives.
If you choose Underwater Photography, your dive shop may have a rental underwater camera housing ($15–20). Alternatively, GoPro in a waterproof housing works well for the photography adventure.
☀️ Afternoon
Free Afternoon — Beach, Hammock, or Island Exploration
Koh Tao island interior or Tanote Bay
Koh Tao's interior is a jungle-covered hill with viewpoints overlooking both sides of the island. Rent a motorbike (from $8/day) and explore — Tanote Bay on the east coast is quieter and beautiful. Or simply lie in a beach hammock and do nothing.
Koh Tao's roads are steep with loose gravel in the interior — ride slowly and wear shoes, not flip-flops. A motorbike accident will end your diving week.
Traditional Thai Massage
Sairee Beach massage shops, Koh Tao
After two days of diving, a traditional Thai massage is the right call — loosens compressed joints and works out the muscle fatigue from carrying dive equipment. Sairee Beach has numerous reputable massage shops.
Specify traditional Thai massage (not oil massage) — harder pressure and full body stretch. 60 minutes for 300–400 THB is the standard rate.
🌙 Evening
Koh Tao Night Dive Briefing (if chosen as 5th adventure)
Japanese Gardens or Shark Bay, Koh Tao
If your fifth AOWD adventure dive is the Night Dive, this evening's briefing and dive is one of the most memorable experiences in recreational diving. The reef comes alive at night — octopus, lobster, sleeping fish, and bioluminescent plankton. Dive torches provided.
The night dive adventure is included in most AOWD course packages. If yours doesn't include it, ask if it can be added. Don't miss it — night dives are completely different from day dives.
🍽️ Meals
Dive shop café breakfast
Thai / International · $6 · Light pre-dive breakfast. Some dive shops serve smoothie bowls and toast for Western divers.
Lunch on the beach or dive boat
Thai · $8 · Many dive boats carry a lunch box — typically rice with grilled chicken or fish.
Seafood dinner on Sairee Beach
Thai seafood · $18 · Whole grilled fish (pla pow) is the Koh Tao speciality — order by the piece and eat with hands.
AOWD Certification Complete, then Kayaking & Celebration Dinner
Thursday, September 9
Est. spend

🌅 Morning
AOWD Adventure Dive 5 — Final Dive & Certification
Koh Tao dive sites
The fifth and final adventure dive — either the Night Dive (if not done last night) or an additional elective of your choice. After surfacing, complete final paperwork and skills verification. Your instructor submits your certification to PADI.
PADI digital certification is available same-day via the PADI app — no need to wait for a plastic card in the post.
Certification Paperwork & Digital Card
Your dive shop, Sairee Beach
Complete the certification application with your dive shop. PADI Advanced Open Water cards can be issued digitally within 24 hours. Physical plastic cards are mailed to your home address. Add the digital card to your wallet — it is accepted at dive shops worldwide.
The digital PADI card is fully accepted worldwide and never gets wet. Log into padi.com to access your certification history.
☀️ Afternoon
Kayaking Around Koh Tao Coastline
Koh Tao south coast, depart from Mae Haad or Chalok Bay
Rent a double kayak and paddle around the southern tip of Koh Tao — the rocky coastline reveals hidden coves, rock formations, and occasional sea turtles. A gentler perspective of the island after four days underwater.
Go in the morning if possible (afternoon wind picks up from the southwest September–October). Always stay within 100m of shore in a kayak.
Shark Bay Snorkel
Shark Bay (Ao Thian Ok), south Koh Tao
Shark Bay (Ao Thian Ok) on the south end of Koh Tao is reliably populated by blacktip reef sharks and green sea turtles — a free snorkelling experience that rivals paid boat trips. Wade from the beach and snorkel over the shallow reef.
Blacktip reef sharks are completely harmless to humans — they are typically less than 1.5m long and actively avoid people. If you see one, stay still and watch.
🌙 Evening
PADI Certification Celebration Dinner
Sairee Beach restaurant strip, Koh Tao
You are now a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver. Celebrate properly — a proper sit-down dinner with the group at one of Koh Tao's better restaurants. Compare dive logs, plan the next certification (Rescue Diver?), and toast with something worth toasting with.
Zanzibar Bar and Restaurant or Lotus Bar are popular with the dive community for celebration dinners. Book ahead if dining in a group of 4+.
🍽️ Meals
Light pre-dive breakfast
Thai · $6 · Last morning dive — keep it light. After certification is confirmed, eat properly at brunch.
Post-certification brunch
International · $12 · After certification paperwork is done — treat yourself to a proper sit-down brunch on the beach.
Celebration dinner — Sairee Beach
Thai / International · $35 · Spend properly tonight. Whole lobster, grilled prawns, fresh fish — Koh Tao seafood is excellent and affordable.
Fun Dive at Sail Rock, then Ferry Departure
Friday, September 10
Est. spend
$166
per person
🌅 Morning
Day Trip to Sail Rock (Hin Bai)
Hin Bai (Sail Rock), Gulf of Thailand — 12km SE of Koh Tao
Sail Rock, 12km offshore between Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, is one of Thailand's finest dive sites — a submerged pinnacle rising from 30m to break the surface. Famous for dense schools of chevron barracuda, groupers, and between June and November, whale shark encounters. Two dives typically included on the day trip.
Book the Sail Rock trip the day before — it fills up fast. The trip departs early (07:00–08:00) and returns by 13:00, leaving time for the afternoon ferry.
Whale Shark Briefing & Marine Life Spotter
Dive boat, Gulf of Thailand
Sail Rock has the highest whale shark sighting rate in the Gulf of Thailand. Your dive guide will brief on whale shark encounter protocol — stay at least 3m away, no touching, no flash photography, no blocking the animal's path. Sightings are never guaranteed.
Whale shark season at Sail Rock peaks June–November — September is an excellent month. The animal is harmless (filter feeder) and encounters, when they happen, last 5–20 minutes.
☀️ Afternoon
Return to Koh Tao & Ferry Departure
Mae Haad Pier, Koh Tao
Rinse equipment, return gear, collect your dive log and any remaining certification documents. Pack and check out. Take the afternoon Lomprayah ferry back to Chumphon or Koh Samui for onward travel.
The 13:30 Lomprayah ferry is the main afternoon departure. Book it the night before to guarantee a seat in peak season.
Final Koh Tao Lunch Before Ferry
Mae Haad Pier area, Koh Tao
One last Thai lunch on the island — sit at a plastic-chair restaurant near Mae Haad Pier and order som tam (green papaya salad), khao pad (fried rice), or one final serving of pad thai.
The restaurants near the pier are slightly cheaper than Sairee Beach — a good last stop before the journey home.
🌙 Evening
Onward Travel from Chumphon or Koh Samui
Chumphon Station or Koh Samui Airport
Connect to your onward destination — Chumphon for the overnight train to Bangkok, or Koh Samui airport for flights. Koh Tao to Bangkok by train + ferry is a classic backpacker route and takes 10–12 hours overnight.
Remember PADI's flying after diving rule: wait at least 18 hours after your last dive before boarding a flight (24 hours to be conservative). If you dove on Day 5 morning, you can fly from approximately 02:00–08:00 the following day.
🍽️ Meals
Light breakfast before Sail Rock departure
Thai · $6 · Very light — crackers, banana, water. The 60-minute boat crossing to Sail Rock can be choppy.
Dive boat snacks + pier lunch
Thai · $12 · Most Sail Rock boats serve snacks between dives. A proper lunch at Mae Haad pier before the ferry.
Ferry or train food
Thai · $10 · Night trains from Chumphon have a basic dining car. Pack snacks and noodles in a cup as backup.
