🌅 Morning
Arrive at Naha Airport (OKA)
Naha Airport
The Yui Rail monorail connects Naha Airport directly to central Naha and the Kokusai-dori area in about 15 minutes.
Buy a one or two-day Yui Rail pass if planning to use the monorail multiple times — it covers most central Naha attractions.
☀️ Afternoon
Kokusai-dori shopping street
Kokusai-dori, Naha
Naha's main shopping and dining strip, lined with souvenir shops, Okinawan craft stores, and street food stalls selling local specialties.

🌙 Evening
Okinawan dinner with awamori tasting
Kokusai-dori area, Naha
A first taste of Okinawan cuisine — rafute (slow-braised pork belly), goya champuru (bitter melon stir-fry) — paired with awamori, the island's distinct rice-based spirit.
Ask for awamori served with ice and water (mizuwari) if the straight spirit is too strong for your taste.

The former royal palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom, a UNESCO World Heritage Site rebuilt after wartime destruction and a 2019 fire, with vivid vermillion architecture blending Chinese and Japanese influences.

A serene former royal retreat garden blending Chinese and Japanese landscaping styles, used historically to entertain visiting Chinese envoys.
A peaceful, less crowded counterpoint to Shuri Castle — good for a relaxed walk after the busier castle grounds.
🌙 Evening

💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook
- Okinawa's traditional diet, rich in sweet potato, bitter melon, tofu, and fish, is closely linked to the region's renowned longevity — seek out izakaya leaning into these local staples.
- A rental car is the most practical way to reach Churaumi Aquarium and the northern beaches — public transport options to the north are limited and slow.
- Typhoon season (roughly June-October) can disrupt flights and ferries — check forecasts before and during travel in those months.
- Shisa statues, sold throughout Kokusai-dori, traditionally come in pairs (one with mouth open, one closed) believed to guard against evil and keep good fortune in.
- Okinawa has a distinct culture and history from mainland Japan, shaped by the independent Ryukyu Kingdom — locals appreciate visitors recognising this distinction.
