4 Days in Porto: Wine Cellars, Azulejos & the Douro

Porto is the most beautiful small city in Europe. The Ribeira riverside with its coloured houses tumbling to the water, the port wine cellars across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia, Livraria Lello's swooping Art Nouveau staircase, and a food scene built around francesinha sandwiches and fresh Atlantic fish. Best May–September in the warm months.

☀️ Afternoon

🏛️

Ribeira waterfront and Cais da Ribeira

Cais da Ribeira, Porto

The medieval Ribeira (riverside quarter) is Porto's most atmospheric neighbourhood — coloured houses from the 14th to 18th centuries, the twin-level Luís I Bridge above, and the rabelo boats (traditional port wine transport vessels) tied along the Douro quay.

💡

The Luís I Bridge (1886) has two levels — the lower for pedestrians and trams, the upper for the Metro. Walk the upper deck for the best view of Ribeira and the wine lodges across the river.

🏛️

Sé Cathedral and São Bento Station

Terreiro da Sé / Praça Almeida Garrett, Porto

Porto Cathedral (12th century, partly Romanesque) has an extraordinary azulejo-lined cloister. São Bento Station (1916) has 20,000 painted tiles illustrating Portuguese history — the most spectacular train station in Portugal.

💡

The São Bento tiles are one of Portugal's greatest art works and they're in a functioning railway station — free to view any time.

Before you go

📅 Best time to visit

May–September. Porto can be very rainy November–February (it receives more rain than London). Summer (July–August) is warm (25–28°C) with long days and lots of outdoor dining. The Festa de São João on June 23rd is Porto's biggest festival — the whole city outside overnight, plastic hammers, garlic plants, and sardines grilling on every street.

🛂 Visas

Schengen Zone. Visa-free for US (90 days), UK, EU, Australian, Canadian citizens.

💱 Currency

Euro. Porto is the most affordable city in the Iberian Peninsula — a full dinner with wine costs €20–30 per person. A full glass of vintage port in a cellar: €5–8.

🆘 Emergency numbers

police: 112

ambulance: 112

💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook

  • The francesinha is Porto's unique sandwich — there is no equivalent elsewhere in Portugal. Debate rages about who makes the best. Café Santiago (Rua do Passeio Alegre) is the consensus favourite.
  • Port wine is best understood as 3 categories: Ruby (young, fruity), Tawny (aged in small barrels, nutty), and Vintage (single year, 20+ years). Start with a Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) — best value introduction.
