💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook
- Mofongo (mashed fried plantain, usually with garlic and served alongside meat or seafood in sauce) is the dish to order at least twice.
- The bioluminescent bay glow is strongest on dark, moonless nights and reduced significantly around the full moon — check the lunar calendar before booking.
- Old San Juan's blue cobblestones are made of slag from ships' ballast, a unique 16th-century building material found almost nowhere else.
- Driving in San Juan can be congested; rideshare apps work well within the city, a rental car is mainly useful for day trips like Fajardo.
- Hurricane recovery infrastructure has improved significantly, but always check current conditions if traveling during hurricane season.
