Day-by-day plan
Arrival & Diocletian's Palace
Tuesday, June 22
Est. spend
$200
per person
🌅 Morning
Arrive at Split Airport (SPU)
Split Airport
Shuttle buses and taxis connect the airport to central Split in about 30 minutes.
The Pleso Prievoz shuttle bus is a cheap, reliable option timed to flight arrivals.
☀️ Afternoon
Diocletian's Palace
Diocletian's Palace, Split
A UNESCO World Heritage Roman palace complex built around 305 AD, remarkable because people still live and work inside its ancient walls today — Split's entire historic centre is built within and around it.
The palace cellars and the Cathedral of St. Domnius' bell tower (climbable for a city view) are the two highlights most visitors prioritise.
🌙 Evening
Dinner on the Riva waterfront
Riva, Split
Split's palm-lined seafront promenade, packed with cafés and restaurants, and the social heart of the city in the evening.
🍽️ Meals
Airport or hotel breakfast
Croatian · $12
Palace area lunch
Croatian (Dalmatian) · $18
Riva dinner
Croatian (seafood) · $40
Marjan Hill & Old Town Deep Dive
Wednesday, June 23
Est. spend
$180
per person
🌅 Morning
Marjan Hill
Marjan Hill, Split
A forested peninsula and nature park overlooking the city, with walking trails, small chapels, and the best panoramic viewpoint over Split's historic centre and the Adriatic.
Telegrin peak is the highest point and the best viewpoint — the climb is moderate but rewarded with sweeping views over the islands.
☀️ Afternoon
Cathedral bell tower and Peristyle
Peristyle, Diocletian's Palace, Split
Climb the Cathedral of St. Domnius' bell tower for sweeping views, then explore the Peristyle, the palace's central square, where opera singers sometimes perform impromptu in the evening.
The bell tower climb has narrow, somewhat precarious sections — not ideal for those with mobility concerns, but the view is genuinely spectacular.
🌙 Evening
Dinner in Varoš neighbourhood
Varoš, Split
A charming, less touristy old fishing district just outside the palace walls, with traditional Dalmatian konobas (taverns) serving black risotto and grilled fish.
🍽️ Meals
Marjan Hill café breakfast
Croatian · $12
Old Town lunch
Croatian · $18
Varoš dinner
Croatian (Dalmatian) · $40
Hvar Island Day Trip
Thursday, June 24
Est. spend
$200
per person
🌅 Morning
Ferry to Hvar
Hvar Town, Hvar Island
A catamaran from Split reaches Hvar Town in about an hour — one of the most glamorous islands in Croatia, known for lavender fields, Venetian architecture, and a lively harbour.
Book the fast catamaran rather than the car ferry for a day trip — it's significantly quicker and timed well for a full day on the island.
☀️ Afternoon
Hvar Town and Fortica fortress
Hvar Town, Hvar Island
Explore Hvar's marble-paved streets, the 16th-century Cathedral, and climb up to the Spanish Fortress (Fortica) for sweeping views over the harbour and the Pakleni Islands.
A short boat taxi to the Pakleni Islands (just offshore) offers some of the clearest swimming water near Hvar if time allows.
🌙 Evening
Return ferry and dinner in Split
Split
Return to Split by catamaran in the evening for a relaxed final dinner.
🍽️ Meals
Ferry terminal breakfast
Croatian · $10
Hvar Town lunch
Croatian (Dalmatian) · $25
Split dinner
Croatian · $40
Brač's Zlatni Rat Beach & Departure
Friday, June 25
Est. spend
$175
per person
🌅 Morning
Ferry to Brač and Zlatni Rat beach
Zlatni Rat, Bol, Brač Island
A short ferry to Brač island reaches Bol, home to Zlatni Rat ('Golden Horn'), a uniquely shaped triangular pebble beach widely considered one of the most beautiful in the Adriatic.
The beach's distinctive shape changes slightly over time due to currents — it's a geological curiosity as much as a beautiful beach.
☀️ Afternoon
Beach time and final swim
Zlatni Rat, Brač Island
A relaxed final beach afternoon at Zlatni Rat before heading back to Split for departure.
🌙 Evening
Return ferry and transfer to Split Airport
Split Airport
Return to Split by ferry, then transfer to the airport. Allow at least 2.5 hours before an international flight given the extra ferry logistics.
Plan the return ferry with generous buffer time — don't cut an international flight close because of potential ferry delays.
🍽️ Meals
Bol breakfast
Croatian · $12
Zlatni Rat beach lunch
Croatian · $20
Airport food
Croatian/International · $16

💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook
- Diocletian's Palace is a living, working part of the city, not a roped-off ruin — people genuinely live, run shops, and operate restaurants inside its ancient walls.
- Book fast catamaran tickets for island day trips (Hvar, Brač) rather than the slower car ferries if doing a single-day round trip.
- Climbing the Cathedral bell tower has narrow, somewhat precarious sections — worth knowing in advance if mobility is a concern.
- Split's beaches in the city itself are modest — Brač's Zlatni Rat or Hvar's Pakleni Islands offer significantly better swimming for a day trip.
- August is considerably more crowded and expensive than June or September for the same Adriatic warmth.
