Arrival & Sanur Beach

Monday, May 10

Est. spend

$80

per person

🌅 Morning

🚆

Arrive at Ngurah Rai Airport, transfer to Sanur

Ngurah Rai International Airport → Sanur

Sanur is the best base for families with toddlers — calm, safe, and about 20 minutes from the airport. The beach is protected by a reef and has the calmest, shallowest water in Bali. Book a family villa with a private pool.

💡

Book a private transfer with a car seat in advance — this is not reliably available on Grab in Bali. Your villa can usually arrange. IDR 200,000–300,000 ($12–18) for a family-size car.

1h$15

☀️ Afternoon

🌊

Sanur Beach — toddler paradise

Sanur Beach, Sanur, Denpasar

The long, protected beach at Sanur has warm, shallow water (knee-deep for 20 metres) that's perfect for under-5s. The promenade path runs the length of the beach and is completely flat — ideal for prams and small walkers.

💡

The beach between Hotel Segara and Bali Beach Garden Hotel has the calmest water and good shade. Sun loungers are IDR 20,000–50,000 ($1–3) or free with a drink order.

🌙 Evening

🍜

Sunset dinner at Massimo — family restaurant

Jl. Danau Tamblingan 228, Sanur

Massimo on Sanur Beach Road is one of the best Italian restaurants in Bali — and genuinely children-friendly, with a playground outside and a menu that includes proper pasta without chilli.

💡

The pizza and gelato are exceptional. The outdoor garden has space for children to move. Book ahead for sunset time.

Bali Zoo Morning + Pool Afternoon

Tuesday, May 11

Est. spend

$96

🌅 Morning

🎯

Bali Zoo — morning animal encounter

Jl. Raya Singapadu, Singapadu, Gianyar

One of Southeast Asia's best family-friendly zoos — morning animal shows, elephant bathing, orangutan breakfast, and free-roaming animals. The 'Breakfast with Orangutans' program is a genuine highlight for children.

💡

Book the Breakfast with Orangutans in advance (IDR 350,000 extra per person). Gates open at 9am — be there early before the heat. The animal shows run at 10:30am and 2:30pm.

3h$35

☀️ Afternoon

🌊

Villa pool afternoon — no plan

Your villa, Sanur

Toddlers need nap time and pool time every day. This is not optional. Two hours at the villa pool after the zoo is the correct programme.

💡

The daily routine that works: morning activity (9–11am), lunch, pool/nap (12–3pm), late afternoon activity or beach, early dinner (5:30pm). Never skip the middle rest.

3hFree

🌙 Evening

🍜

Night market — Pasar Sindhu, Sanur

Pasar Sindhu, Jl. Hang Tuah, Sanur

The local night market at Sanur runs from 6pm — satay, noodles, fresh juice, and the kind of atmospheric street food experience that children remember as the best meal of the holiday.

💡

Most stalls are IDR 15,000–30,000 ($1–2). The satay chicken and the es campur (shaved ice dessert) are universally toddler-approved. Cash only.

Day 3

Tegallalang Rice Terraces & Ubud

Wednesday, May 12

Est. spend

$138

per person

🌅 Morning

🏛️

Tegallalang Rice Terraces — short walk, big view

Jl. Raya Tegallalang, Gianyar

The terraced rice paddies are spectacular and the walk into them is short enough for toddlers — a 15-minute descent and return, with a swing over the valley as the reward. Go early before the heat and crowds.

💡

The café at the top edge (many options) provides a shaded view without the descent. For toddlers who walk well: the lower path is maintained and not steep. The swing (IDR 150,000) is for adults and older children — under-5s should not be placed on it without careful consideration.

1.5h$8
🏛️

Ubud market — manageable for families

Jl. Raya Ubud, Ubud

The Ubud Art Market is covered and compact — 20 minutes of browsing for gifts without overwhelming small children. The surrounding area has good toddler-level interest: chickens, cats, temple offerings.

💡

Go to the market first thing (opens 8am) before the heat. Most toddlers can handle 30–45 minutes maximum. Have a juice and exit strategy ready.

1h$20

☀️ Afternoon

🌊

Pool/nap at villa or Komaneka pool café

Komaneka or similar pool café, Ubud

Return to Sanur or use the pool area at one of Ubud's pool cafés (pay-to-use pool day passes are available at several Ubud resorts for non-guests).

💡

The Four Seasons Sayan day pass (IDR 250,000 per adult, children free) includes pool and river valley views — worth it for one afternoon as a treat.

3h$25

🌙 Evening

🍜

Early dinner at Locavore Kids or Sari Organik

Sari Organik, Jl. Subak Sok Wayah, Ubud

Sari Organik in Ubud has its own rice field view, excellent organic local food, and a completely relaxed atmosphere for children. Dinner at 5:30pm before the return drive.

💡

The walk to Sari Organik through rice fields is 15 minutes from central Ubud. Call ahead if going by car.

Waterbom Bali (the right kind of splash)

Thursday, May 13

Est. spend

$120

per person

🌅 Morning

🎯

Waterbom Bali — Asia's best waterpark for families

Jl. Kartika Plaza, Kuta

Voted Asia's best waterpark multiple years running. The lazy river, the kids' splash zone (specific 0–5 area with shallow pools and small slides), and the family raft rides are perfectly designed for toddlers. Shaded parent viewing areas everywhere.

💡

Children under 2 are free. Entry includes unlimited rides and lazy river. The Superbowl family raft ride is the best for mixed ages. The Flow Rider wave simulator is for adults only — toddlers are in the Funtastic kids' zone. Lockers AED 50,000 ($3) per day.

4h$60

☀️ Afternoon

🌊

Hotel room rest — mandatory

Your villa

A full morning at a waterpark is enough activity for toddlers. Afternoon nap at the villa is not optional on Day 4.

3hFree

🌙 Evening

🌊

Kuta Beach sunset walk

Kuta Beach, Kuta, Badung

The long Kuta Beach at sunset is one of Bali's classic experiences — waves too strong for toddlers to swim in, but perfect for running along the sand at low tide as the sun drops.

💡

The sunset at Kuta peaks around 6:15pm. The beach is flat and open — ideal for free running for small children. Stay well above the tide line.

1.5hFree

🍽️ Meals

🎯

Family cooking class — children's version

Paon Bali Cooking Class, Ubud area (transport included)

Paon Bali offers a family-friendly version of their cooking class where children have their own simplified tasks (mixing, shaping, simple cutting with safe tools). The morning market visit is educational and toddlers love it.

💡

Book the family version specifically — regular classes are not designed for small children. IDR 500,000 ($30) per adult, children free under 5. You cook 5 dishes and eat them for lunch.

4h$40

☀️ Afternoon

🌊

Seminyak beach club — kids pool

Ku De Ta, Jl. Kayu Aya, Seminyak

Ku De Ta or Potato Head Seminyak beach clubs have designated children's pools (shallow, flat, warm) separate from the adult infinity pools. The most comfortable toddler-friendly beach club experience in Bali.

💡

Minimum spend AED 200,000 ($12) per adult at most beach clubs — count as the cost of poolside service. Children's pools at Ku De Ta and Potato Head are shaded and supervised. Towels provided.

3h$40

🌙 Evening

🍜

Early dinner at Sarong

Jl. Laksmana, Seminyak

Book the 6pm family-friendly slot at Sarong — one of Bali's best restaurants and genuinely welcoming to children (request a private table or terrace area).

💡

Book the 6pm table — toddlers are awake and manageable, restaurant not yet full, no stares for wiggly children. The babi guling spring rolls and duck confit are excellent.

🌊

Slow morning at Sanur beach — toddler swim

Sanur Beach, Sanur

The best morning of the trip for small children — shallow calm water, long beach to run on, and no agenda. Pack snacks and stay until lunch.

3hFree

☀️ Afternoon

🏛️

Tanah Lot Temple at low tide

Beraban, Tabanan

The sea temple on a rock is one of Bali's most dramatic sights — at low tide you can walk across to the base. Even toddlers can manage the short, flat path from the car park.

💡

Check tide times — low tide between 2–5pm is best. The path to the temple base requires bare feet on the rock. Toddlers are fine if carried or if they can walk on uneven surfaces. The sunset from the viewing platform (IDR 30,000 entry) is spectacular.

2h$8

🌙 Evening

🍜

Final dinner — Menega Café, Jimbaran Bay

Menega Café, Jimbaran Beach, Jimbaran

Tables in the sand at Jimbaran Bay, torches lit, fresh seafood grilled over coconut husks, and the sound of waves. The most atmospheric seafood dinner in Bali — and children sitting in the sand makes everyone relaxed.

💡

Dinner at 6pm before dark. The grilled barramundi, tiger prawns, and clams are the order. Total cost for a family of 4 with drinks: IDR 800,000–1,200,000 ($50–75).

Final beach morning and packing

Sanur Beach and market

One more slow beach morning. Buy final gifts (Batik at the Sanur market, duty-free Bintang at the airport), check out by 11am.

💡

The Sanur Sunday morning market (6–10am) has the best local food and crafts in the area at genuine local prices.

☀️ Afternoon

🚆

Depart — Ngurah Rai Airport

Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali

Allow 2.5 hours before international departure with toddlers. Family lanes at immigration are faster. The kids' play area in the departure lounge is genuinely well-equipped.

💡

Book the private car with car seats for the return journey — same as arrival. The airport play area is signed in the main departure terminal.

2h$15

🍽️ Meals

🌅

Final nasi campur

Balinese · $8 · The last proper Balinese meal. Any warung near the beach.

🚕Sanur → Ngurah Rai Airport (private, with car seat) · 20min$15

Before you go

📅 Best time to visit

April–June and September–October — dry season, manageable heat (28–32°C), lower crowds than August. The rainy season (November–March) brings afternoon showers but mornings are fine and prices are lower.

🛂 Visas

Most Western nationalities receive a free 30-day Visa on Arrival. Extendable to 60 days. Children on their own passport require the same visa exemption.

💱 Currency

Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). Carry cash for markets, warungs, and small payments. BCA and Mandiri ATMs work reliably. The exchange rate at airport money changers is bad — use ATMs or exchange at Kuta money changers.

🆘 Emergency numbers

police: 110

ambulance: 118

💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook

  • Balinese people love children — your toddlers will be welcomed, touched, and photographed. This is genuinely affectionate, not inappropriate.
  • Bali Belly (stomach upset) affects adults more than children in practice — but ensure all drinking water is bottled or filtered, fruit is washed in clean water, and ice is from restaurants (not street vendors).
  • The correct daily rhythm with toddlers: 7am beach/activity, 9am breakfast, 10–11am activity, 12–3pm pool/nap, 3:30pm beach, 5:30pm dinner, 7pm bed. Do not deviate.
  • Indonesian mosquito repellent (DEET 30%+) is cheap and essential — malaria risk is low in Bali but dengue fever is real.
  • A private villa with a pool is worth the extra cost when travelling with toddlers — a hotel pool on request schedule doesn't work.
