Arrival & Gear Setup
Monday, May 10
Est. spend
$70
per person
🌅 Morning
Arrive at Ngurah Rai Airport, transfer to Canggu
Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali
Canggu is the surf hub of Bali — 25 minutes north of the airport by Grab. Get your local SIM at arrivals and book your first surf lesson before you check in.
Stay in Canggu (Batu Bolong or Berawa area) rather than Kuta — the waves are better, the vibe is more authentic, and the food is excellent. Guesthouses from $20–40/night.
☀️ Afternoon
Gear up — rent board and wetsuit rash guard
Batu Bolong Street surf rental shops, Canggu
Several surf shops on Jl. Batu Bolong rent complete setups — longboard (best for learning), rash guard, and a leash. Agree on a week-long rate: typically IDR 80,000–120,000/day ($5–7) for a 9ft foamboard.
The foamboard (soft-top) is not embarrassing — it's what professional coaches use for learning. Never start on a fibreglass board. Rent the longest, widest board available.
Beach walk and wave watching — Batu Bolong
Batu Bolong Beach, Canggu
Before your first lesson, spend an hour watching. Observe how waves form, where the better surfers sit, how they read the sets, and where the beginner-friendly white water is.
The beginner area is the white water (already broken waves) — not the green unbroken waves the more advanced surfers are riding. Your first week will be entirely in the white water.
🌙 Evening
Old Man's Beach Bar — surf culture introduction
Old Man's, Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong, Canggu
The legendary Canggu beach bar and surf spot — sand floor, cold Bintang, live music, and the full cross-section of Bali surf culture. This is where you'll spend every post-surf evening.
Arrive for the sunset (around 6:15pm) and stay for the first set. Talk to other surfers — the surf community is genuinely open and sharing about waves, spots, and conditions.
🍽️ Meals
Airport arrival snack
Indonesian · $5
Betelnut Café, Canggu
Healthy/café · $12 · Best smoothie bowls and avo toast in Canggu. The local's favourite first meal.
Old Man's dinner
Western/Indonesian · $12
First Lesson — Kuta Beach Whitewash
Tuesday, May 11
Est. spend
$60
per person
🌅 Morning
Beginner surf lesson — 2.5 hours
Kuta Beach, Bali — any surf school along the beach
Your first proper lesson at Kuta Beach — the most beginner-friendly beach in Bali with a long, gentle slope and consistent small white water. The instructor takes you through paddling, pop-up technique, and wave timing.
Booking in advance is not required at Kuta — any instructor on the beach will take you. Negotiate to IDR 350,000 ($22) for a 2-hour private lesson. The instructor stays in the water with you the entire time.
☀️ Afternoon
Practice session — another 1.5 hours in the water
Kuta Beach
After the lesson, stay in the water alone or ask the instructor to watch one more session. Muscle memory builds in the first day — the more time you spend catching waves, the faster the pop-up becomes automatic.
Film your own pop-up from the side using your phone propped in the sand — watching yourself surf is the fastest way to see what's going wrong.
🌙 Evening
Post-surf analysis and ice cream
Any café near Kuta Beach
What worked. What didn't. Where the weight was wrong. The first day of surfing is full of information if you pay attention. A structured post-session debrief with your instructor (if available) is worth more than the lesson.
Most instructors are willing to debrief for free — ask. Write notes. Watch your phone footage. The pattern of mistakes becomes obvious when you watch it back.
🍽️ Meals
Early breakfast before lesson
Indonesian · $5 · Eat 1 hour before the water — full stomach and surfing don't combine well.
Warung lunch near Kuta
Indonesian · $5 · Any warung near the beach — nasi campur for THB 40,000 ($2.50).
Canggu evening meal
International · $12
Progress Day — Getting Up Consistently
Wednesday, May 12
Est. spend
$80
per person
🌅 Morning
Morning surf session — independent practice
Kuta Beach or Legian Beach (slightly less crowded)
Day 3 is the critical day — the pop-up either starts working or it doesn't. Go back to the same spot, same conditions, and apply what you learned. The consistency comes from repetition, not coaching.
If the pop-up is working, try angling slightly — don't ride the wave straight to shore. Turn your front foot 45 degrees and feel the board respond. This is the first steering input.
☀️ Afternoon
Second lesson — technique refinement
Kuta or Legian Beach
Book a second instructor session — this time focused on what's going wrong rather than starting from scratch. Foot position, weight distribution, and reading the wave before paddling.
Spend the first 10 minutes of the session explaining what worked and what didn't from yesterday. A good instructor will adapt the session to your specific problems.
🌙 Evening
Waterbom Bali — waterpark recovery
Waterbom Bali, Jl. Kartika Plaza, Kuta
Optionally, Waterbom Bali is one of the best waterparks in Southeast Asia — if your body is aching from surfing, the lazy river and waterslides are surprisingly restorative.
Entry is SGD 35 adults. Thursday afternoons are quietest. Or skip Waterbom and go for a Balinese massage instead — equally restorative.

🌅 Morning
Morning surf at Batu Bolong Beach
Batu Bolong Beach, Canggu
Canggu's most popular break — a beach break with more power than Kuta but still manageable for improving beginners. By Day 4 you should be catching waves consistently; this is the step up.
The peak at Batu Bolong is busier than Kuta — paddle past the lineup on the shoulder (outside the main wave zone) and catch the smaller, less competitive waves. Don't drop in on other surfers.
Surf coach session at Echo Beach
Echo Beach, Canggu
Echo Beach in Canggu has more powerful, hollow waves — a video analysis session where the coach films you from the beach and provides real-time feedback. This is the fastest way to identify persistent technique issues.
Book a video analysis session through any surf school — they film from the beach for 45 minutes then review the footage with you. Seeing yourself surf is game-changing.
☀️ Afternoon
Rest and beach time
Canggu beach or accommodation pool
Day 4 is the physical peak — your shoulders, arms, and core are working harder than they have in years. Two sessions in a morning is the right amount. Afternoon in a hammock is mandatory.
🌙 Evening
Uluwatu cliff walk and surf watch
Uluwatu Temple cliffside, Pecatu
Take an evening scooter ride to Uluwatu — the famous reef break beneath the cliff temple. Watch from above as experienced surfers take on one of Bali's most consistent and challenging waves. A masterclass in what you're working toward.
The viewing area from the cliff path is free. The temple itself charges IDR 30,000 ($2) entry. At sunset, the combination of the wave, the light, and the temple is one of Bali's greatest experiences.
🍽️ Meals
Pre-surf rice and egg
Indonesian · $3
Single Fin Bar, Uluwatu
Western/Indonesian · $12 · The most famous surf bar in Bali — cliff edge, wave views, cold beer. Worth the trip even without surfing.
Old Man's again — it earns its place
Various · $12
Peak Performance Day
Friday, May 14
Est. spend
$85

🌅 Morning
Dawn patrol — Batu Bolong at 6am
Batu Bolong Beach, Canggu
Dawn patrol is when the most serious surfers go — glassy water before the trade winds arrive, fewer people in the lineup, and the best light of the day. Surf one to two hours then have breakfast on the beach.
Set the alarm. The sunrise from the water is the best view in Bali. The offshore wind before 8am makes waves much cleaner and easier to surf.
☀️ Afternoon
Full afternoon surf session — peak skill day
Batu Bolong or Echo Beach, Canggu
By Day 5 you should be angling on waves, popping up consistently, and beginning to feel the rhythm of the ocean. Afternoon sessions are usually windier but good for volume.
Focus on the paddle today — the paddle into a wave is 80% of surfing. A strong, committed paddle at the right moment means you catch everything.
🌙 Evening
Canggu spa and recovery
Desa Seni Eco Resort, Jl. Subak Sari, Canggu
A 2-hour oil massage after 5 days of surfing is not optional. Desa Seni spa in Canggu is the best — Balinese oil massage targets the exact muscles surfing exhausts.
Book the 4pm massage so you finish in time for sunset drinks.
🍽️ Meals
Post-dawn breakfast — Betelnut Café
Healthy/café · $12 · Full post-surf breakfast after the dawn session.
Quick warung lunch
Indonesian · $4
Canggu date night — Fishbone Local
Seafood/Indonesian · $25 · The best fresh seafood restaurant in Canggu. The grilled barramundi is excellent.
Final Full Surf Day
Saturday, May 15

🌅 Morning
Two sessions — morning and late afternoon
Batu Bolong or Echo Beach
The penultimate surf day. Do a morning session, rest in the middle of the day, and come back in the late afternoon. This is the day most beginners have their best sessions.
Take a video of your best wave today. You will watch it 1,000 times.
☀️ Afternoon
Rest, pool, and packing
Canggu shops and accommodation
Afternoon rest between surf sessions. Buy a surf-related gift from the Canggu boutiques — most sell good quality Bali-made rashguards, board shorts, and tote bags.
🌙 Evening
Farewell sunset at Batu Bolong — last surf
Batu Bolong Beach, Canggu
A final evening session — catch the last waves of the trip as the sun sets behind the horizon. Finish by standing on your board as the sky turns orange.
🍽️ Meals
Pre-surf breakfast
Indonesian · $5
La Brisa beach club, Echo Beach
Indonesian/seafood · $18 · La Brisa is the most beautiful beach club in Canggu — bamboo architecture, excellent food, sunset views.
Final Canggu dinner — Nalu Bowls and bar
Various · $15
Final Morning & Departure
Sunday, May 16
Est. spend

🌅 Morning
One last dawn patrol (optional)
Batu Bolong Beach
If your flight is afternoon: one more dawn session at Batu Bolong. If morning departure: watch the surfers from the sand with a coffee — a different and equally valuable perspective.
Return the board and gear before 10am. Get your deposit back.
☀️ Afternoon
Transfer to airport — Grab
Ngurah Rai International Airport
Allow 45 minutes to the airport from Canggu. International departures need 2.5 hours.
Book the Grab the night before if departing before 9am.
🍽️ Meals
Final babi guling or nasi campur
Balinese · $5 · The last Balinese breakfast.
Airport food
Various · $10

📅 Best time to visit
April–October for the best surf season in Bali (offshore winds, consistent swell from the south). The south-facing beaches (Kuta, Canggu, Uluwatu) are at their best during the dry season. November–March brings bigger, rougher swell and more rain.

💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook
- Surfing etiquette: don't drop in (take a wave someone is already riding), paddle wide to avoid the lineup, and respect more experienced surfers' space.
- Apply sunscreen before paddling out — spray sunscreen in the water harms coral. Use reef-safe mineral SPF.
- The ocean is powerful. If you feel out of control on a wave, fall off the back of the board — don't fall forward.
- Fins are sharp. When falling, keep your hands up and fall flat — don't dive headfirst.
- Book surf lessons through established schools rather than beach touts — quality instructors make the difference between learning and not.
