Travelling to an English-speaking country?

If English isn't your first language, a few weeks of practice before you arrive builds real confidence — especially for asking directions, ordering in restaurants, and understanding regional accents.

Essential in Canada

  • 1.Excuse me, could you help me? — Polite way to approach strangers
  • 2.Could I have the bill/check please? — Restaurant (bill = UK, check = US)
  • 3.Which platform/track for [destination]? — At train stations
  • 4.Sorry, I didn't catch that — asking someone to repeat themselves

🌅 Morning

🚆

Arrive via Calgary Airport and drive to Banff

Calgary International Airport

Calgary is the nearest major airport, about 1.5 hours from Banff by car — a rental car is highly recommended given the park's spread-out attractions and limited public transit.

💡

Book a rental car well in advance during peak summer — Banff's visitor numbers strain regional car rental supply.

☀️ Afternoon

🏛️

Banff townsite and Bow Falls

Banff townsite

A charming mountain town with Banff Avenue's shops and restaurants, and Bow Falls a short walk away — a relaxed introduction to the area before the more demanding hikes ahead.

💡

The Fairmont Banff Springs hotel, visible from town, is worth a look even if not staying there — a genuinely striking castle-like building in the mountains.

🏛️

Lake Louise

Lake Louise, Banff National Park

An impossibly turquoise glacial lake set beneath the Victoria Glacier, with the historic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise on its shore — one of the most photographed lakes in the world for good reason.

💡

Arrive before 7am in peak summer — the parking lot fills and access can be restricted to shuttle-only by mid-morning given overwhelming visitor numbers.

☀️ Afternoon

🏛️

Moraine Lake

Moraine Lake, Banff National Park

Arguably even more striking than Lake Louise, set within the Valley of the Ten Peaks — the famous view from the Rockpile Trail appeared on the old Canadian $20 bill.

💡

Access to Moraine Lake by private car is heavily restricted in peak season — check current shuttle bus requirements before planning your visit, as rules change seasonally.

Banff Gondola up Sulphur Mountain

Banff Gondola, Sulphur Mountain

A gondola climbing to 2,281 metres, with a boardwalk to the summit's historic Cosmic Ray Station and sweeping 360-degree views over the Bow Valley and surrounding peaks.

💡

Go early in the morning for the clearest visibility — afternoon cloud build-up is common in summer.

2.5h$65

☀️ Afternoon

🏛️

Johnston Canyon hike

Johnston Canyon, Banff National Park

A well-maintained catwalk trail through a dramatic limestone canyon, leading to the Lower and Upper Falls — one of the most popular and rewarding moderate hikes in the park.

💡

The Lower Falls are an easy 1.1km walk; continuing to the Upper Falls adds another 1.6km and a steeper but still manageable climb.

🌙 Evening

🌊

Banff Upper Hot Springs

Banff Upper Hot Springs

A historic, naturally heated mineral hot spring pool with mountain views, the perfect way to soothe tired legs after a day of gondola views and hiking.

💡

Evening visits are typically calmer than midday, with the added bonus of stars appearing over the mountains as you soak.

📅 Best time to visit

🛂 Visas

Most Western nationalities (US, UK, EU, Australia) can enter Canada visa-free for short tourist stays, though an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is required for visa-exempt foreign nationals flying into Canada — apply online before travel.

💱 Currency

Canadian Dollar (CAD). Cards are widely accepted everywhere, including small mountain town shops.

💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook

  • A rental car is essential — Banff National Park's attractions are spread out and public transit coverage is limited, though shuttle buses to Lake Louise and Moraine Lake operate in peak season.
  • Check current Moraine Lake and Lake Louise access rules before your trip — private vehicle access is often restricted during peak summer hours, requiring a shuttle or very early arrival instead.
  • Arrive at Lake Louise before 7am in summer — parking fills quickly and access can become shuttle-only by mid-morning.
  • Wildlife (elk, bears) is common throughout the park — maintain safe distances and follow posted park guidance, especially on trails.
  • The Icefields Parkway extends much further to Jasper if you have additional days — even a partial drive from Banff covers some of its best highlights.
