Dubai International Airport, Dubai

Fly into Dubai International Airport (DXB) and transfer to your hotel. Most luxury family hotels are clustered on Jumeirah Beach or near Downtown. Allow two hours for immigration and baggage with children.

🏛️

Dubai Museum at Al Fahidi Fort

Al Fahidi St, Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, Dubai

Ease into the city with a visit to Dubai's oldest building. The museum tells the story of Dubai's transformation from a pearl-diving village to global metropolis through dioramas, artefacts and film — genuinely fascinating for older children and a cool escape from the heat.

💡

Arrive when it opens at 8:30am — it gets crowded by 10am. Entry is just AED 3 per person.

1.5h$8

☀️ Afternoon

🚆

Abra Water Taxi Across Dubai Creek

Al Ghubaiba Abra Station, Bur Dubai

Board a traditional wooden abra at the Al Ghubaiba or Al Sabkha abra station for the two-minute creek crossing to Deira — one of Dubai's most authentic and photogenic experiences. The fare is just AED 1 per person and boats run continuously.

💡

Sit on the outer edges for the best photos of the creek skyline. Kids love the open-sided boats.

30min$2
🏛️

Deira Gold Souk & Spice Souk

Gold Souk, Sikkat Al Khail St, Deira, Dubai

Wander through the covered Gold Souk — the largest in the world — and the adjacent Spice Souk where sacks of saffron, frankincense and dried rose petals fill the air. Let the children smell and touch in the Spice Souk; it's an extraordinary sensory experience unlike anywhere else.

💡

Vendors expect negotiation in the spice souk — offer 60% of the opening price and meet in the middle. Nobody is offended.

🏛️

Dubai Frame

Zabeel Park, Gate 4, Zabeel, Dubai

The 150-metre-tall picture frame sits precisely on the boundary between old Dubai and new, and the glass-floor sky bridge connecting its two towers offers a vertigo-inducing view. The museum inside the frame tells the story of the city's past and future. A genuine must-do that takes about 90 minutes.

💡

Book online to skip the queue. Go in the late afternoon so you get daylight views and can stay for the sunset golden hour.

💡

Book a table for the courtyard — the air-conditioned interior is fine but loses the atmosphere entirely.

After an intense morning at the theme park, recharge at the nearby Shakespeare and Co — a whimsical, storybook-style café chain beloved by Dubai families. The menu spans all-day breakfast, sandwiches, pasta and cakes, and the atmosphere is calm and child-friendly.

💡

The Level Kitchen & Bakery in the mall is a favourite for healthy, child-friendly lunches.

1.5h$60

☀️ Afternoon

🏛️

Desert Safari — Dune Bashing

Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (pickup from hotel)

At 3pm, an operator collects you for the classic Dubai desert safari. The first two hours are spent dune bashing — a convoy of 4WD Land Cruisers navigates the red dunes of the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve at high speed. It is genuinely thrilling and most children over eight love it; younger children should sit in the middle seat.

💡

Book with Arabian Adventures or Platinum Heritage — they use conservation-reserve licensed operators, which means fewer vehicles and better dunes. Avoid very cheap operators.

2hFree
🏛️

Quad Biking & Camel Rides

Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve

At the desert camp, quad bikes are available for adults and older children (minimum age 8, minimum height 120cm). After quad biking, take a guided camel ride around the camp perimeter — camels are patient and safe for children, and the photographs are unforgettable.

💡

Quad biking is usually AED 100 for 20 minutes — book at the camp. Camels are included in most premium safari packages.

1.5h$60

🌙 Evening

🏛️

Bedouin Camp Dinner Under the Stars

Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve

As the sun sets over the dunes, the camp comes alive with traditional Bedouin hospitality — henna painting, tanoura (spinning dervish) dance show, falconry demonstration, and an unlimited BBQ buffet with lamb, chicken, mezze and fresh bread. Eating outdoors in the warm January night with stars overhead is the kind of experience children remember for life.

💡

Dress modestly for the cultural camp — light long sleeves are enough and will also keep off any evening chill. The desert drops to 15°C after dark in January.

🏛️

Legoland Dubai

Dubai Parks and Resorts, Sheikh Zayed Rd, Dubai

Legoland Dubai sits inside Dubai Parks and Resorts and is purpose-built for children aged 2–12. The park spans six themed zones — Lego City, Kingdoms, Adventure, Imagination, Miniland and Factory — with 40 rides, shows and attractions. Miniland alone, a scale recreation of famous Middle East cities in Lego, is genuinely impressive.

💡

The Lego Factory tour shows how a real Lego brick is made — book the first session of the day as spots are limited. Buy a combo ticket if visiting Motiongate or Bollywood Parks on the same campus.

3.5h$280
🏛️

Legoland Water Park

Dubai Parks and Resorts, Sheikh Zayed Rd, Dubai

Adjacent to the main park, Legoland Water Park is specifically designed for children under 12 with gentler slides, a Build-A-Raft river, and a massive interactive water-play structure. The Joker Soaker bucket drops 250 gallons on a 3-minute cycle — the children's absolute favourite.

💡

Legoland Water Park entry is included in the combo ticket. Bring a change of clothes for after.

2hFree

☀️ Afternoon

🏛️

Global Village Final Visit

Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Rd, Dubailand, Dubai

If the schedule allows before an evening flight, Global Village (open October–April) is a vast outdoor cultural market where 90 countries each have a pavilion selling food, crafts and souvenirs. It is loud, colourful and the UAE pavilion's dates and sweets make ideal homeward gifts.

💡

Entry is AED 18 per adult, AED 15 per child. The pavilions are best in the late afternoon before the evening crowds arrive.

2h$20
🏛️

Hotel Check-Out & Airport Transfer

Dubai International Airport, Terminal 3 (Emirates) / Terminal 1 (others)

Allow plenty of time for the airport — Dubai International is vast and immigration for departing families with children can take 30–45 minutes. Most flights from Dubai depart in the early hours, so a late afternoon check-out and airport dinner is the typical pattern.

💡

The Dubai Duty Free is the best in the world — set aside 45 minutes for browsing. Oud perfume and dates are the quintessential Dubai souvenirs.

2h$40

🌙 Evening

🏛️

Airport Dining: Shake Shack or Jones the Grocer

Dubai International Airport, Terminal 3, Airside

Both terminals have excellent restaurant options airside. Jones the Grocer in Terminal 3 serves proper food — sandwiches, salads, cheese boards — rather than fast food, and is a relaxed way to finish the holiday without the stress of finding a restaurant in the city.

💡

Dubai airport opens the gates only 40 minutes before departure even for international flights — you have more pre-gate time than you think. Use it at the restaurant.

1h$80

🍽️ Meals

☀️

Legoland Restaurant

International family · $80 · Multiple dining options inside Legoland — the sit-down restaurants serve proper meals, not just fast food

🌙

Jones the Grocer

🚌Hotel → Dubai Parks and Resorts → Global Village → Airport · 30-45min per leg$80

Before you go

📅 Best time to visit

November to March — pleasantly warm (20–28°C), dry, and perfect for outdoor activities. July–August is extreme heat (45°C+) and not recommended for families.

🛂 Visas

UAE offers visa-on-arrival or free visa to citizens of 60+ countries including UK, US, EU, Australia, and most GCC nationals. Check icp.gov.ae for your nationality. Citizens of India, Pakistan and others need a pre-arranged visa — apply through Emirates airline or a UAE visa agency at least 5 working days ahead.

💱 Currency

UAE Dirham (AED) is pegged to the USD at 3.67. Credit cards are accepted everywhere. ATMs are abundant in malls. Avoid exchanging currency at the airport — rates in Dubai Mall or Deira money changers are significantly better.

🆘 Emergency numbers

police: 999

ambulance: 998

fire: 997

tourist police: 800 TOURIST (8687478)

💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook

  • Download the Careem app before you arrive — it is more reliable than hailing taxis and accepts international cards
  • The Dubai NOL card works on metro, buses and water buses — load AED 100 per adult at the airport and top up at any metro station
  • Ramadan timing changes everything — opening hours shift, no eating in public during daylight, some entertainment venues close. Check your travel dates against the Islamic calendar.
  • Dress codes are enforced at shopping malls — shoulders and knees covered. Children under 12 are exempt but adults must comply.
  • WhatsApp and VoIP calls do not work in the UAE without a local SIM. Buy an e-du or Etisalat SIM at the airport for around AED 75 with data.
