A 20-minute Twin Otter seaplane flight over the North Malé Atoll. The children will be spellbound — coral reef rings visible from the air, turquoise lagoons, tiny sand islands. Seat the family on the right side for the best views on approach. The seaplane lands directly in the lagoon beside the resort jetty.

Resort staff meet you at the jetty with cold towels and a welcome drink. A dedicated family coordinator walks you through the villa (overwater or beach villa with children's bunk area), shows the Crab Shack kids club location, and explains the all-inclusive inclusions. The lagoon in front of the resort has a calm, shallow inner section perfect for paddling with the children this afternoon.

The first afternoon is intentionally gentle — children adjust to the heat, explore the villa, and play in the lagoon shallows while parents decompress. The inner lagoon has a sandy bottom with no sharp coral and water temperature around 29°C. Snorkel gear is available from the water sports centre.

The main open-air restaurant serves a buffet or set menu dinner with a children's section — the Maldivian fish curry is mild enough for older children. This is a family dinner; the adult-only restaurant nights begin from Day 2 once you are settled.

The Crab Shack opens at 09:00. Drop your children (age 5 and 8) at the dedicated kids club building — a purpose-built, shaded, beach-adjacent facility staffed by two qualified childcare professionals per session. Morning session runs 09:00–12:30. Day 2 morning programme: marine biology lesson — the children learn to identify 10 reef fish by name using flash cards and underwater photos, followed by a sandcastle competition on the beach directly in front of the club (lifeguard on duty). The club includes a morning snack at 10:30. Your 5-year-old will be in a supervised small group; your 8-year-old joins the older activity group. You are given a resort radio and a contact card — staff call you only if needed.

Overwater Spa, resort island

While both children are fully supervised at the Crab Shack (09:00–12:30), parents have a 90-minute couples treatment at the overwater spa. Standard offering includes a traditional Maldivian scrub using coconut and sea salt followed by a deep-tissue massage. The treatment room is built over the lagoon — the floor has a glass panel and you can watch fish below during the treatment. This is genuinely uninterrupted adult time.

After collecting the children from Crab Shack at 12:30, the afternoon is a family activity: a guided snorkelling session on the resort's house reef. The marine biologist guide leads the group — adults snorkel freely while the guide stays close to both children (your 8-year-old can snorkel independently; the 5-year-old wears a flotation vest and the guide holds their hand when needed). The house reef has 30+ metre visibility with near-certain sightings of green turtles, blacktip reef sharks (harmless), and hundreds of reef fish. Depth over the coral head is 3–8 metres — adults can free-dive for better photos.

Crab Shack Kids Club + lagoon activity area

The Crab Shack afternoon session runs 14:00–17:30. Both children can be dropped back for the afternoon programme — today's session is snorkelling lessons in the lagoon shallows (supervised by the club's qualified water safety instructor, not on the house reef). Your 5-year-old does bubble-blowing and face-in-water exercises in knee-deep water; your 8-year-old joins the beginner snorkel group with mask and fins. Meanwhile parents have 3.5 hours free: the adults-only sun deck, or simply reading at the villa pool with no interruptions.

Overwater Sunset Bar, end of main jetty

Collect the children at 17:30 from the afternoon Crab Shack session, then settle them at the villa for a shower and rest. The resort's evening babysitting service (complimentary, provided by trained resort nannies) begins at 18:30 — the nanny comes to your villa and stays until you return. Parents walk to the overwater bar for the 18:30 sunset cocktail hour: the bar is built at the end of a 200-metre jetty extending into the lagoon and has unobstructed 360-degree sunset views. This is the best sunset spot on the island.

Today's Crab Shack morning programme is the Marine Biology Lesson — the club's in-house marine biologist (a resort staff member who does double duty) teaches the children to identify 15 common Maldivian reef fish: clownfish, parrotfish, triggerfish, Moorish idol, and others. Each child receives a waterproof ID card to keep. The session ends with a colouring activity. Your 5-year-old will recognise Nemo (clownfish) immediately — the guide leans into this shamelessly.

While both children are in Crab Shack until 12:30, parents take independent snorkelling equipment from the watersports centre and snorkel the house reef without a guide — adults only, no children to supervise, no turning back early. The house reef extends 2km around the island and has a deep wall drop-off on the eastern side reaching 30+ metres. At this depth you can see Napoleon wrasse, barracuda schools, and the occasional manta ray in July. This is the premium adult experience that most families with young children never get to have.

Remote sandbank, North Malé Atoll (resort coordinates this)

The resort's signature activity: a 15-minute dhoni (traditional Maldivian boat) ride to a remote sandbank — a flat island no larger than a tennis court, surrounded by open ocean. The resort sets up a picnic table with fresh fish, salads, fruit, and cold drinks. Children can walk the entire perimeter of the sandbank in under 3 minutes and immediately understand how small it is — this is an extraordinary geography lesson. The water around the sandbank is completely flat, shallow, and warm. The family has the sandbank to themselves for 2 hours.

The resort runs a 90-minute dolphin watching dhoni cruise leaving at 16:30. Spinner dolphins are resident in the North Malé Atoll and are reliably sighted on this route — the crew knows the feeding areas. Children are seated on cushioned bow seating with a rope safety bar. When dolphins are sighted, the crew positions the boat alongside the pod. The 8-year-old can lie on the bow and look directly down at the dolphins; the 5-year-old sits on a parent's lap for the leaning-over moments.

South beach point, resort island

After dinner, take the children to the southern beach point of the resort island at 21:00. In July, the phytoplankton concentrations in the North Malé Atoll are high enough to produce bioluminescence — every footstep in the wet sand and every wave produces a bright blue-white glow. Walk the children to the waterline and let them drag their feet. The 8-year-old will immediately start splashing; the 5-year-old may be initially nervous (the glow is surprising and magical in equal measure). This is one of the rare natural phenomena that requires no expertise and no equipment.

Today's Crab Shack morning is preparation for the evening's night reef walk: the marine biologist runs an interactive session on nocturnal reef creatures — what comes out at night, how fish sleep, why octopuses are active after dark. Children make and decorate their own 'marine explorer' torches (waterproof torch kits provided). This is a deliberate daytime session so the evening walk has context and the children arrive excited rather than nervous.

With both children in the Crab Shack until 12:30, this is a completely unstructured adult morning. The resort's adults-only infinity pool overlooks the lagoon at the eastern tip of the island. Order coffee and lie in the sun. This is what the all-inclusive format is designed for — and what most families rarely get. No agenda, no supervision duties, no timekeeping.

Collect the children from Crab Shack at 12:30 and head to the watersports centre for a family kayaking session. Your 8-year-old can paddle a single kayak in the calm inner lagoon with light supervision; your 5-year-old sits in the front of a tandem with one parent. The lagoon is enclosed and shallow — no current, ideal for children. The resort's watersports instructor stays on a stand-up paddleboard nearby for the first 20 minutes. After that, the family has the lagoon to themselves.

Afternoon Crab Shack is available but today is structured as optional — parents can keep the children with them for the kayaking afternoon and bring them in later, or drop them at 14:00 for the free-play and craft session. Today's afternoon programme includes friendship bracelet making and a scavenger hunt on the beach. Both are low-structure and designed for tired post-lunch children.

At 19:30, the marine biologist leads a guided torch walk along the reef flat at the island's edge — water depth is 20–50cm at low tide, safe for children to walk in with water shoes. The torches illuminate creatures that hide during the day: sleeping parrotfish (cocooned in mucus bubbles), octopuses hunting in rock crevices, crabs, and urchins. The children use the torches they decorated in the morning's Crab Shack session. This is one of the most memorable activities on the trip. Duration approximately 45 minutes; the 5-year-old will be on a parent's back for the last 10 minutes.

Today's morning programme is a children's cooking class: the club chef teaches the children to make Maldivian fish bites (a mild, breaded fresh tuna preparation) with coconut rice. Each child gets their own small chopping board, child-safe knife, and apron. The session ends with the children eating what they cooked for the 10:30 snack. Your 8-year-old will engage fully; your 5-year-old mostly enjoys the mixing and the eating.

Adults-only beach and infinity pool

With both children in Crab Shack until 12:30, parents have the lagoon and the adults-only beach entirely to themselves. Today is about doing nothing in particular — swimming in the open lagoon, reading on the sun deck, ordering a fresh coconut at 10:00. This is the midpoint of the holiday and the deliberate rest before the evening's special dinner.

Watersports Centre, resort lagoon

Collect the children at 12:30. This afternoon is a family watersports session focused on the older child: the watersports instructor runs a beginner stand-up paddleboard lesson for your 8-year-old in the inner lagoon — completely supervised, wearing a buoyancy aid, in knee-deep water to start. The 5-year-old sits with a parent on the beach watching, then has a turn lying on the board in the shallows. SUP sessions for beginners are approximately 45 minutes of actual instruction.

Crab Shack Kids Club, Dinner Club extension

The Crab Shack offers an optional 'Dinner Club' extension until 21:00 — children have a supervised dinner at the kids club (tonight: pasta and fish fingers, a movie screening, and popcorn). This is the evening that parents get the sandbank candlelit dinner. Drop off at 18:30. The Crab Shack nanny looks after both children for the full evening. Parents are given a contact number and the club is 200 metres from the sandbank dinner venue. The resort additionally provides a babysitting service (complimentary for under-5s) that can be combined with the dinner club if the 5-year-old needs to leave early.

The signature parents-only experience: a dhoni boat takes you to the same sandbank visited on Day 3, now transformed with a single candle-lit table, lanterns, and a butler service. The private dinner is a set 4-course menu: fresh lobster, local reef fish, tropical sorbet, and a dessert platter. Your own butler for the evening, chosen wine from the resort's cellar, and no other guests within sight. The sandbank is lit only by candles and stars. This is the dinner that you remember for the next decade. Duration approximately 2.5 hours; the dhoni returns you to the resort at 21:30.

House reef, guided entry point (watersports centre side)

Today is a full family activity morning — both children join the guided reef tour with the marine biologist. Your 8-year-old snorkels independently; your 5-year-old uses the flotation vest and the guide maintains physical contact throughout. The guide specifically targets the fish the children identified in the Day 2 and Day 4 Crab Shack sessions — 'that's the Moorish idol you drew on Tuesday' — making the experience educational and personal. The morning tour runs 09:00–11:00 and covers the most biodiverse section of the house reef.

Watersports Centre + Villa pool area

After the family snorkel, the resort's morning nanny service (available 10:00–12:30 for under-6s, complimentary) can take the 5-year-old to the shallow villa pool for supervised water play. Adults and the 8-year-old head to the watersports centre for free kayaking — the 8-year-old has now been kayaking twice and is confident; parents and child paddle the outer lagoon boundary together. This is adult-level exploration, not toddler-pace paddling.

After a full snorkelling morning, the afternoon is deliberately low-key. Lunch at the beach pavilion, then a 2-hour rest at the villa pool. Both children nap or play in the villa's sheltered pool area. This is the second-to-last full day and the pace is intentionally relaxed — children and parents both rest before the final full day tomorrow.

Drop both children at the 14:00 session — today's programme is traditional Maldivian handicrafts: making lacquer-work kaleidoscope patterns (a simplified version of the national craft) and weaving palm leaf bracelets. Both are appropriate for ages 4–12. While the children are in the afternoon session, parents have the adults-only beach to themselves for 3.5 hours.

Resort jetty departure

A 90-minute resort dhoni cruise at sunset — the entire family joins this one. The dhoni sails west into open water for the sunset. Fresh fruit, soft drinks, and sparkling wine for parents are served on deck. The boat crew points out any dolphins or manta rays en route. At this time of year, the horizon is clear and the sunset over the Indian Ocean is spectacular. Children can sit on the bow with a parent; the crew sets up cushions and a rope safety barrier for the sailing sections.

Villa and resort lagoon

The final morning is unhurried. Pack the evening before — today is 07:30 breakfast as a family, a last swim in the villa pool, and a short walk to the lagoon for the children to say goodbye to the water. The 8-year-old will snorkel one more time; the 5-year-old will wade in the shallows. This is the unscheduled, unguided time that consolidates the memory of the place.

The Crab Shack issues a 'Junior Marine Biologist' certificate to all children who attended the marine biology sessions during the week — signed by the marine biologist, with the list of species they identified. This is a genuine piece of paper that most children frame. Collection is 09:30 on departure day. The staff will know your children by name.

The resort buggy takes the family to the seaplane jetty for check-in. The return flight over the atolls is as beautiful as the arrival.
