Day-by-day plan
Arrival — Seaplane Transfer & First Sunset
Friday, January 22
Est. spend
$280
per person
🌅 Morning
Arrive at Malé Velana International Airport
Velana International Airport, North Malé Atoll
The seaplane takes off from the terminal adjacent to the international airport — your resort's speedboat will meet you at the dock if a seaplane isn't included. The seaplane approach over the atolls is one of aviation's great moments.
Seaplanes only fly in daylight — if arriving after 3pm you'll transfer by speedboat. Book the earliest possible flight to maximise seaplane chances. Window seats on both sides have different views.
☀️ Afternoon
Arrive, check in, and fall in love with the lagoon
Your overwater villa, Maldives
Your overwater villa arrives exactly as promised — but somehow still exceeds expectations. The glass floor panel, the ladder into the turquoise below, the silence. Spend the first afternoon doing nothing but being here.
Ask the butler to arrange welcome flower petal decorations and a champagne setup on the deck — most resorts do this for honeymooners but you need to confirm in advance. Add this to your booking notes.
🌙 Evening
Champagne sunset from the overwater deck
Your overwater villa deck
The sun sets at exactly 6pm year-round. For the first evening, stay on your own deck — no restaurant can match your own private deck with the sun dropping into the Indian Ocean.
Ask your butler to arrange a champagne and canapé sunset service on your deck (most resorts offer this for a fee, some include it for honeymoon packages). The moment when the last sliver of sun hits the water is instant on the equator.
🍽️ Meals
Airport transit meal
Various · $15 · Eat properly in Malé before the seaplane — food in the Maldives is expensive.
Welcome lunch, resort beach restaurant
International · $0 · Most luxury resorts include welcome lunch. Confirm with your resort before arrival.
Main restaurant — honeymoon welcome dinner
International/Maldivian · $150 · Many resorts offer a complimentary honeymoon dinner — confirm when booking. Show proof of honeymoon (marriage certificate or booking note).
Sunrise Breakfast & Couples' Spa
Saturday, January 23
Est. spend
$780
per person
🌅 Morning
In-villa sunrise breakfast on the deck
Your overwater villa deck
Room service breakfast on your overwater deck as the sun rises over the Indian Ocean — fresh tropical fruit, pastries, eggs cooked to order, and coffee. The most intimate breakfast of your lives.
Order the night before — room service breakfast usually needs to be booked by 10pm. Request the deck table setup with a flower arrangement. Worth the extra cost.
House reef snorkel together
House reef, beneath your villa
Your first snorkel — the reef directly beneath your villa. In clear water at 8am with no crowds, the reef is at its most alive: turtles grazing, parrotfish colouring the coral, reef sharks cruising the edge.
Hold hands underwater. The reef fish are unbothered by human presence. Turtles in the Maldives are completely unafraid — you can swim alongside them for minutes.
☀️ Afternoon
Couples' spa treatment — 3 hours
Resort spa
The signature couples' spa package at most Maldivian luxury resorts: side-by-side massage tables in a pavilion over the water, a full-body massage with coconut oil, a body scrub, and a flower bath drawn for two.
Book this on arrival — the couples' pavilion books out. Choose the water-facing room. The flower bath at the end (petals, warm water, candles) is the moment that makes the price irrelevant.
🌙 Evening
Sunset cruise — dhoni under sail
Resort dhoni departure jetty
A traditional wooden dhoni at sunset, just the two of you (or with a small group) — sailing the atoll as the horizon turns orange, with champagne, and dolphins if you're lucky.
Ask for the private dhoni option rather than the group cruise — the extra cost for two is usually $40–60 more and the privacy is worth everything.
🍽️ Meals
Sunrise room service breakfast
International · $60 · The most romantic breakfast possible.
Beach grill lunch
Seafood/grilled · $60
Over-water restaurant dinner
International fine dining · $150 · Glass floor panels, the ocean below, candle-lit. Book the corner table facing the sunset side.
Private Sandbank Picnic
Sunday, January 24
Est. spend
$450
per person
🌅 Morning
Morning free — lagoon kayak
Resort lagoon (kayaks usually included)
Paddle a double kayak across the lagoon together — no destination, just the two of you on flat, warm, impossibly clear water.
Free at most resorts. Go before 10am when the wind picks up. Paddle to the edge of the lagoon to see the colour change from turquoise to deep blue where the reef drops away.
☀️ Afternoon
Private sandbank picnic — the most Maldivian hour
Private sandbank in the lagoon (arranged by resort)
The resort takes you by speedboat to a private sandbank — nothing but white sand, clear water, and the horizon. Champagne, fresh fruit, lobster, and two beach chairs. Usually 2–3 hours. The definitive Maldives experience.
Book 24 hours ahead — they sometimes share the sandbank between couples on large resort days. Request a private slot and confirm. Bring a hat and strong sunscreen — there is no shade whatsoever.
🌙 Evening
Night snorkelling with bioluminescent plankton
Resort beach or lagoon edge, after 9pm
On moonless nights, the water glows electric blue when disturbed — swimming at night creates trails of light around your body. The most extraordinary natural phenomenon on earth available only from tropical waters.
Check the moon phase — no moon = best bioluminescence. Ask your butler or dive centre about conditions on the night. No lights in the water — total darkness is required.
🍽️ Meals
Pool breakfast
International · $0 · Breakfast buffet if included in rate.
Private sandbank champagne picnic
Seafood/picnic · $0 · Included in sandbank package at most resorts.
Barefoot beach dining
Maldivian/seafood · $120 · Tables in the sand, torches lit, waves audible.
Manta Rays & Stargazing
Monday, January 25
Est. spend
$400
per person
🌅 Morning
Manta ray snorkelling excursion
Nearest manta cleaning station or Hanifaru Bay (seasonal)
If your resort is in Baa Atoll or South Malé Atoll, manta rays are a realistic prospect. A 3-hour excursion to the feeding grounds — the experience of 20–200 mantas barrel-rolling overhead while feeding in nutrient-rich water is impossible to overstate.
Ask your resort if manta rays are currently being sighted. Not guaranteed — ask before booking the excursion if conditions are right. Snorkel only; no scuba near feeding mantas.
☀️ Afternoon
Afternoon in the villa — read, sleep, exist
Your overwater villa
The most important afternoon of the honeymoon. Close the laptop. Put the phone face down. Lie in the hammock over the lagoon and do nothing of consequence.
🌙 Evening
Stargazing session with the resort astronomer
Resort beach (ask your butler)
Several Maldivian resorts (Soneva Fushi, Anantara, Lux) have resident astronomers who set up telescopes on the beach. Zero light pollution, the full Milky Way visible, and a guided explanation of the southern sky.
Book through the resort's activities desk on arrival. Best on a new moon night. The Southern Cross is visible from the Maldives — most Western visitors have never seen it.
🍽️ Meals
Early breakfast (before 7am for excursion)
Light · $0 · Eat lightly before ocean activities.
Post-excursion beach lunch
Seafood · $60
Private beach BBQ for two
Seafood BBQ · $180 · The resort sets up a private BBQ on the beach — lobster, prawns, and snapper over charcoal, champagne. The most special dinner of the trip.
Local Island & Culture
Tuesday, January 26
Est. spend
$415
per person
🌅 Morning
Visit a local Maldivian island
Nearest local island (ask resort concierge)
Step outside the resort bubble for a morning — a nearby inhabited island shows the real Maldives beyond the luxury bubble. Coral stone houses, mosque, fishing dhonis, and the island's school.
Dress modestly on local islands — shoulders and knees covered. The local café serves mas huni (tuna with coconut) for MVR 20 ($1.30) — the best meal value in the Maldives. Buy handwoven baskets from local women.
☀️ Afternoon
Underwater restaurant lunch
Ithaa Undersea Restaurant, Conrad Maldives Rangali Island (or equivalent at your resort)
The Maldives has several underwater restaurants (Ithaa at Conrad Rangali, Subsix at Niyama) — 5–6 metres below the surface, surrounded by reef fish and coral, with the ocean above your head. The most surreal dining experience on earth.
Ithaa must be booked weeks ahead and requires staying at or travelling to Conrad Rangali. If not possible, ask your resort if they have any underwater dining option or a similar wow experience.
🌙 Evening
Couple's ocean yoga at sunset
Resort beach or over-water platform
Many Maldivian resorts offer couples' yoga on the beach or on a floating platform over the lagoon at sunset — the combination of the practice, the light, and the ocean is genuinely moving.
Book through the spa or activities desk. Sunset yoga classes run at 5:30–7pm. No yoga experience needed — the instructor leads a gentle couples' flow.
🍽️ Meals
Maldivian breakfast at local island café
Maldivian · $5 · The best breakfast value in the entire trip at MVR 30 ($2).
Underwater restaurant lunch
Fine dining/seafood · $180 · Book weeks ahead. The menu is a set course; the setting makes every dish taste better.
Resort beachfront dinner
International · $120
Final Full Day — Do Nothing Perfectly
Wednesday, January 27
Est. spend
$370
per person
🌅 Morning
Dolphin cruise at dawn
Resort speedboat — departs before 6:30am
Spinner dolphins are common in the Maldives — the dawn cruise finds pods of 50–200 dolphins surfing the bow wake of the speedboat. The most joyful 45 minutes of the trip.
Don't wear sunscreen immediately before — if you swim with them, chemical SPF harms them. Reef-safe mineral SPF only.
☀️ Afternoon
Final afternoon — slow everything down
Your overwater villa
The best afternoon of the honeymoon is spent knowing it's ending. Swim one more time. Float above the reef. Order room service. Take a long, slow bath. Let the beauty of the place land fully.
🌙 Evening
Farewell tasting menu — the signature restaurant
Resort signature restaurant
The best table at the resort's finest restaurant for the final evening — a tasting menu designed around Maldivian ingredients, an excellent wine list, and the view that you've now memorised.
Book on arrival for the best table. Tell them it's your last night. The best resorts will make this evening exceptional without being asked.
🍽️ Meals
Pre-dawn dolphin cruise snack
Light · $0 · Eat after — sea before breakfast.
Room service long lunch on deck
International · $60 · The last deck lunch. Eat slowly.
Farewell tasting menu
Fine dining/Maldivian · $250
Final Sunrise & Departure
Thursday, January 28
Est. spend
$30
per person
🌅 Morning
Last sunrise from the overwater deck
Your overwater villa, Maldives
Set the alarm. Watch the sun rise over the Indian Ocean from the deck of your overwater villa. This is what you came for. Say nothing.
Face east for sunrise. The eastern-facing villas have the best sunrise. If you're west-facing, walk to the jetty end — 3 minutes from any villa.
☀️ Afternoon
Transfer back to Malé — seaplane or speedboat
Resort jetty → Malé International Airport
Check-out is typically 11am. The transfer to Malé Velana International Airport takes 15–90 minutes. The Maldives will look even more beautiful on the way out.
Pack your favourite beach memories. The departure tax of $30 per person is usually added to the resort bill at checkout. Confirm what's included.
🍽️ Meals
Last breakfast on the deck
Maldivian/International · $0 · Ask for the traditional Maldivian breakfast — mas huni, roshi flatbread, and Maldivian tea. The last breakfast.
Malé airport lunch
Various · $20 · Malé airport has improved — eat before the gate.
Before you go
📅 Best time to visit
November to April is the northeast monsoon — the calmest seas, clearest skies, best visibility for snorkelling and diving. December and January are the most popular and most expensive months. May to October brings the southwest monsoon with more cloud and occasional rough seas, but significantly lower prices.
🛂 Visas
All nationalities receive a 30-day tourist visa on arrival free of charge. Proof of accommodation booking and return ticket required. No prior application needed.
💱 Currency
Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) locally, but all resort transactions are in USD. USD is the de facto resort currency. All-inclusive packages save significantly — alcohol and excursions at à la carte pricing are expensive. Confirm exactly what's included before booking.
🆘 Emergency numbers
police: 119
ambulance: 102
💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook
- Tell the resort it's your honeymoon when booking — most include complimentary flowers, champagne, and room decoration. Bring your marriage certificate.
- The best resorts are not necessarily the most expensive — read recent TripAdvisor and Honeymooners Magazine reviews for current service quality.
- All-inclusive packaging: calculate your daily spend on food, drinks, and activities honestly — AI packages commonly save $400–600 per couple per day.
- Sea conditions: check before each water excursion. The Maldives can have rough days even in dry season.
- Respect the no-shoe/barefoot culture at many resorts — it's not just aesthetic, it's genuinely more relaxing.
