Day-by-day plan
Arrival & Malé City
Friday, January 8
Est. spend
$430
per person
🌅 Morning
Arrive at Velana International Airport (MLE)
Velana International Airport
Most resorts are reached by speedboat or seaplane directly from the airport, bypassing central Malé entirely — confirm your specific transfer method in advance.
Seaplane transfers only operate during daylight hours — if your flight lands late, you may need an overnight in Malé before continuing to your resort.
☀️ Afternoon
Malé city orientation (if time allows)
Malé City, Maldives
The world's smallest and one of its most densely populated capital cities, with the Old Friday Mosque (Hukuru Miskiy), the National Museum, and the bustling Local Market all within walking distance.
Most visitors only briefly pass through Malé en route to a resort island — a couple of hours is enough to see the highlights if your transfer timing allows.
🌙 Evening
Speedboat or seaplane transfer to resort
Resort island
Transfer to your resort island, where check-in typically includes a welcome drink and orientation to the island's facilities.
Most luxury resorts include transfers in the room rate — confirm this when booking, as seaplane transfers can otherwise cost several hundred dollars per person.

Snorkelling & Reef Exploration
Saturday, January 9
Est. spend
$295
per person
🌅 Morning
Guided house reef snorkel
Resort house reef
Most Maldives resorts sit directly on a coral house reef accessible right from the beach or overwater villa steps — a guided snorkel reveals reef sharks, rays, and a huge variety of tropical fish.
Early morning snorkelling typically offers the calmest water and the best visibility before afternoon winds pick up.
☀️ Afternoon
Relaxation at the overwater villa
Resort island
A relaxed afternoon enjoying the resort's overwater villa, infinity pool, or spa — the core appeal of a Maldives stay is genuine, unhurried relaxation.
🌙 Evening
Sunset dolphin cruise
Resort island waters
A boat excursion timed for sunset, with strong chances of spotting pods of spinner dolphins in the open water surrounding the atoll.
Bring a camera with a fast shutter speed — dolphins often appear suddenly and move quickly.
🍽️ Meals
Resort breakfast
International · $0 · Often included in resort packages.
Beachside lunch
Maldivian/International · $35
Resort dinner
International · $70
Sandbank Picnic & Diving
Sunday, January 10
Est. spend
$390
per person
🌅 Morning
Scuba diving excursion
Resort dive centre
The Maldives is one of the world's premier diving destinations, with vibrant coral, manta rays, and (in season) whale sharks — most resorts have an on-site dive centre for both certified divers and beginners.
Confirm certification requirements in advance — beginners can typically join an introductory dive even without prior certification.
☀️ Afternoon
Private sandbank picnic
Nearby sandbank
A boat trip to a secluded, uninhabited sandbank for a private picnic lunch — surrounded entirely by turquoise water with no other visitors in sight, a quintessential Maldives experience.
Many resorts offer this as a romantic add-on package — book in advance during peak season as availability is limited.
🌙 Evening
Overwater dinner
Resort island
A candlelit dinner set on a private deck above the lagoon, a signature Maldives resort experience for special occasions.
🍽️ Meals
Resort breakfast
International · $0 · Often included in resort packages.
Sandbank picnic lunch
Maldivian/International · $0 · Included in the sandbank excursion package.

Final Relaxation & Departure
Monday, January 11
Est. spend
$420
per person
🌅 Morning
Final morning at the resort
Resort island
A relaxed final morning enjoying the overwater villa, beach, or spa before the transfer back to the airport.
Schedule a final spa treatment if not already booked — many resorts offer treatments in overwater spa pavilions with glass floor panels over the lagoon.
☀️ Afternoon
Transfer to Malé and the airport
Velana International Airport
Transfer back via speedboat or seaplane, timed to arrive at Velana International Airport with sufficient buffer before your departure flight.
Seaplane transfers must be scheduled with enough margin — daylight-only operation means timing is less flexible than speedboat transfers.
🌙 Evening
Departure
Velana International Airport
Allow at least 3 hours before an international flight, particularly if transferring directly from a seaplane or speedboat arrival.
🍽️ Meals
Resort breakfast
International · $0 · Often included in resort packages.
Resort farewell lunch
International · $35
Airport food
Maldivian/International · $18

📅 Best time to visit
November–April (dry season) offers the calmest seas, lowest rainfall, and best overall diving and snorkelling visibility. May–October is the wetter monsoon season, though it remains warm and can offer better rates.
🛂 Visas
Most nationalities receive a free 30-day visa on arrival in the Maldives — no advance application needed for short tourist stays.
💱 Currency
Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), though US Dollars are widely accepted and often the default currency at resorts. Cards are accepted at virtually all resorts; cash is rarely needed outside Malé.

police: 119
ambulance: 102
💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook
- Resort transfer method (speedboat vs. seaplane) significantly affects both cost and how much time you actually spend travelling — confirm this carefully when booking, as remote atolls may require a seaplane.
- Most Maldives resorts occupy a single private island, meaning meals, activities, and excursions are typically bundled into all-inclusive or half-board packages — compare these carefully against à la carte pricing.
- The house reef directly off most resort beaches is often as good as, or better than, a boat excursion for snorkelling — don't feel you must book paid trips for great marine life viewing.
- Alcohol is restricted on local islands (including Malé) but freely available on resort islands — be aware of this distinction if your itinerary includes any local island visits.
- Book sandbank picnics, dolphin cruises, and dive excursions in advance, particularly during the busy December-March high season, as resort excursion slots fill quickly.
