Day-by-day plan
Arrival & Fira
Thursday, July 1
Est. spend
$120
per person
🌅 Morning
Arrive Santorini Airport or ferry
Santorini National Airport
Santorini Airport (JTR) is 6km from Fira. Taxi costs €15–20. Ferry port (Athinios) is 12km from Fira — bus €2.50 or taxi €15. Most visitors arrive by high-speed ferry from Athens Piraeus (5.5 hours, €40) or by plane.
Book accommodation in Oia or Imerovigli (northern caldera) or Fira for caldera-view room. The most iconic views are from the caldera-facing side — prioritise location over room size.
☀️ Afternoon
Fira town walk and caldera view
Fira, Santorini
Fira (the island capital) has the best caldera panorama — the cable car (€6) or the 588-step donkey path connects the port below to the clifftop town 300m above sea level. The views of the Nea Kameni volcanic island in the caldera centre are extraordinary.
The Museum of Prehistoric Thera (Fira, €6) has the most important Minoan artifacts from Akrotiri — the frescoes of the flying fish and the blue monkeys are extraordinary and are more impressive than many Athens museum exhibits.
🍽️ Meals
Metaxy Mas, Exo Gonia
Greek · $45 · Not on the caldera (therefore half the price) and twice the quality. The best food on Santorini. The slow-braised lamb and tomato keftedes are unmissable.
Oia Village & Famous Sunset
Friday, July 2
Est. spend
$260
per person
🌅 Morning
Oia village walk at 8am
Oia, Santorini
The most photographed village in the world is genuine — the blue-domed churches, the cave houses cut into the caldera cliff, and the narrow whitewashed lanes that tumble toward the sea. Go at 8am before the cruise ship tourists arrive at 11am. The windmills at the village entrance and the Byzantine Kasteli fortress ruin are the northern anchors.
The famous dome-and-church photograph is at the Ekklisia Anastasis church in the lower lanes of Oia. Every photograph you've seen was taken from this exact location. Go very early morning — by 9am the lane is impassable.
☀️ Afternoon
Amoudi Bay swimming and octopus lunch
Amoudi Bay, Oia, Santorini
300 steps below Oia — the tiny fishing harbour where octopi hang drying in the sun and fishing families serve the freshest lunch in the Aegean. Swim from the volcanic rocks. The water is extraordinarily clear.
Dimitri's and Sunset Taverna in Amoudi Bay — both excellent. Order the grilled whole octopus and the fresh-caught whatever is on the board today.
🌙 Evening
Oia sunset from Kasteli fortress ruins
Kasteli, Oia, Santorini
The famous Santorini sunset — the sun drops behind the caldera rim as the whole Aegean turns gold-pink. The Kasteli ruins in Oia attract 3,000+ people every evening. Arrive 90 minutes before sunset for a position.
For a quieter sunset (same view): the Skaros Rock in Imerovigli (15-minute hike from Imerovigli village) has the same sunset angle with 90% fewer people.
🍽️ Meals
Lauda, Oia
Greek fine dining · $100 · Caldera-view fine dining at the Andronis Boutique Hotel in Oia. Book 3 weeks ahead. The Santorini cherry tomato salad with Assyrtiko wine reduction is the dish of the island.
Caldera Boat Trip
Saturday, July 3
Est. spend
$240
per person
🌅 Morning
Caldera boat tour — Nea Kameni volcanic island and hot springs
Fira Old Port (Skala), Santorini
The boat tour from Fira old port or Ammoudi Bay visits the active volcanic island of Nea Kameni (hike to the still-smoking crater), the warm volcanic springs of Palea Kameni (bathe in the sulfurous 28°C water that turns your swimwear orange), and optionally the island of Thirasia (quieter Santorini neighbour). Half-day tour: €30–45.
Book a semi-private catamaran tour rather than the large boat tours (40 people). The sailing catamaran sunset tours (€80–100, sunset return with dinner and wine) are the best experience on the island.
☀️ Afternoon
Santo Wines Assyrtiko tasting
Santo Wines, Pyrgos, Santorini
The volcanic soil of Santorini produces one of the world's great white wines — Assyrtiko, lean and mineral, with extraordinary acidity. Santo Wines on the caldera rim in Pyrgos has the best tasting terrace. Barrel and vintage tastings from €12.
Santorini produces Vinsanto — a dessert wine made from sun-dried Assyrtiko and Aidani grapes. It's one of the great dessert wines of the Mediterranean. A 100ml glass costs €8–12 — worth every cent.
🍽️ Meals
Selene, Pyrgos
Modern Greek · $80 · George Hatzigiannakis's restaurant in the medieval village of Pyrgos — the definitive modern Greek cuisine on Santorini. The signature dish changes seasonally.
Akrotiri & Red/Black Beaches
Sunday, July 4
Est. spend
$190
per person
🌅 Morning
Akrotiri — the Minoan Pompeii
Akrotiri, Santorini
The Bronze Age city (3,600 years old) preserved under volcanic ash from the massive eruption that created the caldera. Two and three-storey buildings, frescoes in situ, and a sophistication that was 1,000 years ahead of mainland Greece. Entry €12.
The excavation is entirely covered by a modern roof — comfortable even in summer heat. The city shows that the Minoans had hot and cold running water, indoor toilets, and multi-storey urban housing in 1600 BC.
☀️ Afternoon
Red Beach and Perissa Black Sand Beach
Red Beach, Akrotiri / Perissa Beach, Santorini
Red Beach (adjacent to Akrotiri) has dramatic red-black volcanic cliffs and a pebble beach — genuinely beautiful. Perissa (east coast) has a long black-sand beach with beach clubs, tavernas, and the cleanest swimming on the island.
Red Beach: walk 10 minutes from the car park along the coastal path. The beach is under a 100m cliff — don't stand directly at the base. Perissa: sunbed hire €10 per person, tavernas serve grilled fish directly on the beach.
🍽️ Meals
Loucas, Imerovigli
Greek · $55 · Caldera-view dinner in the quieter village of Imerovigli. The Santorini fava bean purée with capers and onions is the island's true signature dish.
Pyrgos Village & Departure
Monday, July 5
Est. spend
$130
per person
🌅 Morning
Pyrgos — the highest medieval village
Pyrgos Kallistis, Santorini
Pyrgos is Santorini's highest point and least touristy village — Venetian castle on the hilltop, Byzantine churches, and the best panoramic view of the whole island (caldera, eastern coast, and the sea in all directions). Fewer tourists than Oia.
The Kasteli (Venetian castle) in Pyrgos has a different sunset viewpoint from Oia — smaller crowd, same view angle. Less famous but genuinely beautiful.
☀️ Afternoon
Ferry or flight departure
Santorini Airport or Athinios Port
High-speed ferry to Piraeus departs Athinios port at various times (book at Hellenic Seaways). Flight from JTR. Allow 2 hours before ferry or 2.5 hours before flight.
🍽️ Meals
Café Classico, Fira
Greek café · $15 · Best breakfast café in Fira. Greek yoghurt with Santorini honey and fresh fruit.
Before you go
📅 Best time to visit
May, June, and September–October for the best combination of weather (25–30°C), manageable crowds, and lower prices. July–August is extremely crowded and hot — the Oia sunset area can have 3,000 people. Avoid August for Oia specifically.
🛂 Visas
Schengen Zone. Visa-free for US (90 days), UK, EU, Australian, Canadian citizens.
💱 Currency
Euro. Santorini is the most expensive destination in Greece — caldera-view restaurants charge 2–3x Athens prices. The south of the island (Perissa, Perivolos) has much cheaper food and accommodation. The views are just from the wrong side.
🆘 Emergency numbers
police: 100
ambulance: 166
coast guard: 108
💬 Things you won't find in a guidebook
- Santorini has serious water shortage issues — it has no rivers and limited rainfall. Fresh water is expensive and partly imported. Use water sparingly.
- The caldera-view restaurants are exclusively about the view — the food quality rarely matches the price. Eat at the inland villages (Pyrgos, Exo Gonia, Megalochori) for the best food at half the price.
